AM Frequency of the Week: 1540

The whine on 1540 seems to be coming from a gospel music station. Maybe WSIV in East Syracuse, NY?

Despite the whine, I can still pick up KXEL on a cheap Walkman, about 930 miles away here in NJ.

the off frequency whine/hetrodyne is coming form WKVQ EAtonton, GA.. its been happening for like a year now because of the transmitter plant thats not been maintained and the fact they have not been signing off at night.

Make that they have not been signing off at night.

correct... fixed.. this issue started being noticed in some facebook dxing groups and track there for awhile before it was figured out. someone near Columbia, SC can sometimes hear the beatnote during the day

Is anyone else hearing an awful whine on 1540 kHz at night in the Northeast? Somebody is way off frequency -- it sounds like around 300 Hz to my ears. It overpowers any chance of hearing the audio from the offending station.
I can hear the heterodyne on 1540 kHz in the Kansas City area at night. Most annoying!

Does WKVQ even run any programming or just an off frequency dead carrier. I've tried to catch them daytime on the Athens SDR and don't recall hearing any.

Here in So Cal where KMPC's (1540 Radio Korea) directional nighttime 37 kW puts a strong signal over the LA Basin, coverage in the eastern and western LA suburbs is poor with a weak signal sometimes combined with selective fading. As close in as Burbank less than10 miles from the 1540 east LA xmitter, you can sometimes get KFBK 1530 from Sac with a stronger signal! Tight directional pattern notwithstanding, all you have to do is drive 60 or 70 miles out and way beyond and you can hear 1540's skywave signal everywhere!
