AM Frequency of the week: 1580

Far northwest suburban Chicago......

Days: 1580 is normally very quiet. In recent days I've heard a few verynweak signals, Bur not identifiable, so I'll chalk them up daytime skywave.

Nights: CKDO usually on top and fairly reliable. Signal is usually fair to good.

Note; This concludes our series through the former 'A' and "B" AM clear channels. Next week, unless there are objections, I'll go back and revisit the former" "regional" and "local" channels beginning with 550. Then the X band. in the meantime here's wishing all the best for the holidays to my fellow DXers!
.....Jack

In the near north Chicago suburbs 1580 is basically nothing during the day. I think there used to be a daytime station in Aurora, Il before it went silent. At night CKDO usually rises to the top.
Happy Holidays everyone!

Here in Wood Dale, IL in the near NW suburb of Chicago:

Daytime: nothing since 2009 when WKKD Aurora, IL left the frequency
Nightime: mix of stations, with CKDO usually the dominant one

DX/RETRO: another productive frequency for me with 29 different stations heard, including KTLU (Rusk, TX, KNIM (Maryville, MO), WHLY (South Bend, IN before moving to 1620), WBCP (Urbana, IL), WESY (Leland, MS), WLIM (Patchogue, NY), WPGC (Morningside, MD), XEDM (Helmosillo, Mexico) and Voice of America relay from Antingua in 1981. Retro wise, back in 1980's CBJ, Chicouitimi, Quebec used to be the regular nighttime visitor with French language programming. As for the semi-local WKKD in Aurora, Illinois, they went off the air in 2009, so co-owned WONX (AM 1590) could increase their power. Same applied to WMCW (AM 1600) in Harvard, Illinois.

Happy holidays to everyone.

OK, now I remember the 1590 originally WNMP bought out the 1580 in Aurora and the 1600 which was originally in Chicago Heights to increase power.

Yet another Chicago, by the lakeshore.

Daytime: On Lakeshore Drive I can sometimes hear WHLY from South Bend, IN. How well it comes in depends on the exact location.

Critical Hours: I've heard WTTN in Columbus, WI (near Madison) a few times, both in the morning and in the afternoon.

Night: Like the others above, CKDO in Oshawa, Ontario is the usual dominant station. Sometimes it starts well before sunset. In my apartment where CKDO is blocked for some reason I have also heard WBCP in Urbana, IL a few times.

As someone else mentioned, buying and then closing WMCW (1600) in Harvard, IL was part of the deal to clear 1590. WMCW was a 500-watt daytimer. Signal here in Crystal Lake was fair-good. Meanwhile on 1590, WCGO now has a daytime signal here that's about the same in strength as WMCW

Back to 1580....WKKD has also been mentioned. Their pattern didn't favor me, so it was nearly invisible here.

1580 WBCP/Urbana is reportedly dark, although it does not appear they have filed for silent authority. Those 135 watts of daytime authorized P-P-P-Power seem pretty worthless on paper, but maybe not if CADXER was able to hear it in the Windy city

East Tennessee: WNPZ is still licensed but has been off the air for several hears. Daytime is usually WWTF, Georgetown, KY and sometimes WPGY, Elijay GA and various others. First in on any frequenct at sunset is often WJFK (which I'll always think of as WPGC). Just about everywhere I lived this station (with seemingly a different format every year) is first in and last out.

Dayton, OH area: A weak WCNB (at the time) or WVKO days, Morningside MD at sunrise and sunset, more often that not WHLY (or whatever) South Bend before its move to 1620.

I was hearing them in May-June time frame, so this would be a pretty recent development. This part of a trend that I've noticed since I started DXing here around November of last year... several of my logs are already off the air, and there aren't really any new ones appearing. I have to say it's a little depressing. When I used to AM DX in the 80s growing up there were often new stations and new formats, but alas no longer. I'm also finding it increasingly hard to log new stations... when I try there's a lot of straining to hear through static and multiple signals to make out an ID. Oh well, it was fun while it lasted. :)

^^^^^^ Well, just think of that the next time you read a comment online by a MWDXer that they think the band would be "healthier" if it were "thinned out" of all those "excess stations"...

According to my log book, when I first heard them back in 1982, they were using 250 Watts of power. Not sure when they went to 135 Watts.
