AM Frequency of the Week: 1580

East Tennessee: We are supposed to have a local, WNPZ, Knoxville which is still licensed but has been off the air at least 10 years. It seems to be on eternal Silent STA. So, most days it's WWTF, Georgetown, KY which has a pretty decent pattern this direction.
First in at sunset anywhere I've lived is WJFK (WPGC), Morningside MD which seemed to have a new format every DX season. It's also last out at sunrise.
Otherwise I grabbed WTAZ, Oxford AL once with Alabama football. WXGT (WVKO), Columbus OH has been a regular sunset visitor.

Nights is a hodge-podge with CKDO breaking through and I've caught WSRF.
Retro/other: Not a lot different. I remember WHLY, South Bend IN frequently at night in Dayton, Ohio with WCNB, Connersville IN weakly during the day.

QUESTION: This is the end of the former clears. Are we starting on (former) regionals with 550 next week)?

Denver, CO - Daytime, nothing. There is KFCS in Colorado Springs, which should make it up here, faintly, but I'm not getting it. Nighttime, just mush.

Retro - This is a lot more interesting. Note that call letters may have changed from the time a particular station was received. In the early-to-mid 1970s, I lived in O'Fallon, Missouri, where WCLS from Columbus, Georgia came in almost every night with a steady signal. At the time it had 1 kw at night, probably directional. O'Fallon must have been at just the right place to pick up this station. A hundred or so miles to the west in Columbia, these were some of the catches: CBJ Chicoutimi (now Saguenay), Québec; XEDM Hermosillo, Sonora; KLOU, Lake Charles, Louisiana; and KLTR, Blackwell, Oklahoma, interrupting Oklahoma University football to sign off at local sunset, 7:15 pm Central time.

Here in Wood Dale, IL in the near NW suburb of Chicago:

Daytime: usually nothing since 2009 when WKKD Aurora, IL left the frequency. WHLY heard in the past
Nightime: mix of stations, with CKDO usually the dominant one

DX/RETRO: another productive frequency for me with 29 different stations heard, including KAMI (Cozad, NE), KTLU (Rusk, TX, KNIM (Maryville, MO), WBCP (Urbana, IL), WESY (Leland, MS), WLIM (Patchogue, NY), WPGC (Morningside, MD), WSRF (Ft. Lauderdale, FL), XEDM (Hermosillo, Mexico) and Voice of America relay from Antigua in 1981. Retro wise, back in 1980's CBJ, Chicouitimi, Quebec used to be the regular nighttime visitor with French language programming. As for the semi-local WKKD in Aurora, Illinois, they went off the air in 2009, so co-owned WONX (AM 1590) could increase their power. Same applied to WMCW (AM 1600) in Harvard, Illinois.

1580 has been a good freq here since turning back the AM Logging Odometer to 000, some years and 120 miles due west of the old Queens NYC DX days.
Days here now go WVZN/WHEX/WNTZ/WCOY from downstate on the Susquehanna, with the occasional WPGC from DC later (in winter).....
SSS's brang WZKY NC, WVKO OH and WDAB SC......
Dots on the nighttime log are CBJ Chcka .... Chickato .... from Quebec. And just a few years ago, CKDO from Ontario. I know everyone here has heard them, along with kids with their first crystal sets. Stop giggling. I've been busy otherwise.
WSHE Ft. Lauderdale was alone atop 1580 with AoR music one evening, no doubt due to indefinitely undisclosed circumstances.
One heralded SSS in the business' parking lot, an alma mater -- WLIM from Long Island -- was coming in. I called them up, and a few of the co-worker skeptics were listening when the guy on the air said hello to Pottsville and mentioned my name. My prestige at work rose considerably -- to the extent that I was allowed to drive that same vehicle for a few more days.

Tyler, TX:

This was, until 2022, a weak signal coming from daytimer KTLU in Rusk. That facility was surrendered in 2022, leaving 1580 a whole lot of nothing here. Have tried unsuccessfully for KGAF in Gainesville (DFW) since KTLU kicked the bucket Nada. This was also home to the old KLOU in Lake Charles, which would make appearances here during the day, but it, too, has been surrendered.

Nights are a very weak sports station, battling with Mexican music. Neither are very strong, and I've not sat on 1580 long enough to wait aroundVfor a positive ID. Without KTLU, 1580 is a pretty dead dial position here in ETX.

West side of Houston, TX:

Daytime, nothing but slop from local 1590 KMIC
Sunset, a jumble, but KGAF Gainesville TX seems to be the most consistent catch. I occasionally hear KWED in Seguin TX and KOKB "Triple Play Sports" from Blackwell OK.
Night, More jumble with KGAF surfacing occasionally with KOKB and KAGE Van Buren AR at times.
Sunrise, KWED is there along with KGAF, KOKB, and KFCS Colorado Springs "La Tigre"

I'm not sure why, but KGAF, is usually on top of the frequency here, especially around sunset. I suppose KTLU and KLOU being silent have a lot to do with it. I need to spend more time on this frequency...

Retro, from Tulsa OK in the early 70's, on Monday mornings WCLS Columbus GA came in pretty well. I also remember logging then-WPGC Morningside MD when they signed on early Monday.

From NW San Antonio:

Day: It's semi-local KWED in Seguin, about 40 miles to my east. At times of winter daytime skywave, I've heard KGAF in Gainesville, TX, when aiming north.

Sunset: KGAF and KWED.

Night: KGAF is dominant and has a fairly steady signal. I can mostly null it by aiming E/W and hear a weak KWED. At times a very weak KQFN (sports; formerly KMIK "Radio Disney") in Tempe, AZ, can be heard under KWED or mixing with it.

Sunrise: Sports station KOKB in Blackwell, OK, mixes in for a bit when it goes to day power. On a few occasions I've heard KAGE ("Red Dirt Radio") in Van Buren, AR. KGAF hangs in there but is taken out when KWED goes to day power.

DX/Retro: I've logged WPMO (sports) in Pascagoula, MS, and KBLA (talk) in Santa Monica, CA (1,192 miles), just once each. Retired stations I used to hear fairly often at night included KXZZ in Lake Charles, LA, and KIRT in Mission, TX.

KFCS in Colorado Springs used to be an occasional nighttime and common sunrise visitor here, but I'm not hearing it lately.

@jim-satx

Most of the time we four DXers from 'back then' would go about the chase independently, randomly flipping up and down the dial, often in aggravation, in the search for a 'newie' or two.
But one SSS into evening back in Queens ~ 1966, a few of us sat rapt, ears questing, in front of a console Atwater-Kent and its outdoor pulley-swerved diamond loop -- listening to 1580 and what it had in store.
To our east 60 miles, WPAC Long Island signed off. Then we heard both the NJ stations to our west pack it in (WNJH and WCRV then),.
We got a few on the line saying so 'long' and SSBing from WPGC MD and the seeming dozen species in Pennsylvania. Next was WVKO OH closing up shop.
Left was KLOU Lake Charles, audible for a while, then weakened, as it was getting darker and darker out near JFK Airport.
Way WAY weak was this 1580 station playing R&B. Phoenix was a daytimer then. A thumbnail combination of reception conditions, serendipitous momentum and wishful thinking suggested that it was KDAY Santa Monica, where it was just about power/pattern switch time. But we never got an ID.

Clifton, New Jersey

During the day, I get a faint signal of WNYG "Radio Cantico Nuevo" Patchogue, NY. Near sunset, I have received WJFK "1580 The Bet" Morningside, MD. At night, I get CKDO Oshawa, ON.

Central Kentucky:
WWTF 1580 COL Georgetown "97.7 WTF" Alternative Rock using their FM translator branding.

This frequency originally was a 10 kw directional (2 towers) Daytimer and the original calls were WGOR. In the 60s the calls were changed to WAXU and was the Lexington markets de facto country music station, for many years, but daytime only. ( The transmitter site was only 12 miles from downtown Lexington)
FM was added in 1973 at 103.1 giving them nighttime service.
Class A 3 kw mono.
The FM side Struggled to cover all the Lexington metro, however the AM daytime coverage was fairly great.

In 1982 , 100 KW WVLK FM switched from beautiful music to country, burying any country station within 40 miles of Lexington including WAXU.

At this point 1580 did big band and standards for about 10 years, then the station became the "Format of the Week" station, along with frequent calls changes.

I Heart seems to have found success with the WTF Alternative format and the FM translator.
Late afternoons before they power down to 42 watts at Lexington sunset, will find WWTF receivable in large areas of the south/southeast.
I've heard them in: Hartwell Ga., Gatlinburg TN., Winston -Salem NC., Fort Mill SC., just to name a few.

The usual 1580 suspect for years was WKKD/WVFR, but it went silent on 11/29/2008 thanks to the WCGO 1590 buyout. That opened the doors for the following, some of which was caught beforehand:

WCLS Columbus, Ga.; WAMY Amory, Miss.; WBBA Pittsfield, Ill.; KNIM Maryville, Mo.; CBJ Chicoutimi, Que. (a waybacker); WHLY South Bend; CKDO Oshawa, Ont.; and most recently, WWCD Columbus, Ohio, with 3.2 kW daytime operation at 1:24 a.m. Hmm.

South Mississippi:

Day- 1580 The Game WPMO Pascagoula, MS has a good signal near the coast, 5 kw day/51 w night directional to protect WORV Hattiesburg, MS which I have never heard on the air in at least the last 5 years
Sunset - WWTF Lexington, KY "WTF 97.9 Lexington's Rock Alternative" can sometimes be heard while on 10 kw day power which points south.
Night - WIOL Columbus, GA "Hits 104.5" and/or WAMY Amory, MS (classic country).

DFW, Texas

Daytime: Semi-local KGAF Gainesville TX with hometown radio programming.
Sunset: KFCS Colorado Springs with Spanish language programming.
Nights: Can be any of or all of the following - KAGE Van Buren, AR, KWED Seguin, TX, or KOKB Blackwell, OK.

The case of the XEDM of Hermosillo is curious as to how it ended and the technical decisions that were applied. When the change of facilities was requested in 1998 to a mountain of (395 m) 1295.93 foot with an omnidirectional tower of (125 m) 410.105 foot, the output power was adjusted to 10kw with solid state equipment but the connectivity of the place It was bad, in fact when the technical study was done it was not recommended to install the three AM stations in that place, but the priority was to save operating costs and optimize a 50kw FM frequency. The XEDM at the end of the 90's lost coverage, and its operation was reduced. similar to its sister stations that were on the multiplexer (680 AM, 1170 AM and 1580 AM).

I received a 1580 here recently, but soon faded before TOH ID.
I keep checking, but so far, nothing has appeared here in central Texas near Austin.
