AM Frequency of the Week: 1600

What do you get on 1600?

In Bothell it was KVRI Blaine, WA days, and nights I heard the following...
KVRI Blaine
KOPB Eugene, OR (NPR)
KOHI St. Helens OR (sunset only!)

In Bellevue, WA nothin' days, but can hear KVRI mixing with KGST Fresno, CA at times at night.

In Wapato it was a BIG mess of stuff at night, almost like a graveyard. Heard IIRC KVRI, and an oldies station with "Classic Countdown Show" likely KUBA Yuba City, CA.

Warminster PA(10 mi N of Philly):

Usually a weak WHOL from Allentown PA. Have also heard WWRL New York and
WKEN Dover DE(now WAMS) on occasions here.

KVRI is so strongly patterned north-northwest into the Surrey/Vancouver market, I'm surprised anyone south of Mount Vernon can get them. I have trouble hearing them in BELLINGHAM......

Far northwest suburbs of Chicago

Daytime here used to be 500-watt semi-local WMCW, Harvard, IL....which got dumped when local brokering broadcaster Kovas "cleared" the top end of the dial by buying three stations, shutting them all down, and then increasing power on their 1590 stick. WMCW also used to also be on top at night...if barely. Nowadays, 1600 daytime is fairly empty....but I have heard KCRG a few times, as well as WRWC and the Ann Arbor station. At night 1600 is basically a graveyard with any one of the aforementioned trio sometimes making it to the top, along with KATZ. I also used to sometimes here WEUP out of Alabama, but I think they're now exclusively on the X band.

In near East Texas about 90 miles southeast of Dallas during the day it's KRVA Cockrell Hill (Dallas), but nighttime is somewhat of a mess with KRVA gone and KATZ St. Louis often dominant. Morning critical hours brings a decent signal at times from non-directional 50kW WMQM Memphis.

Near north suburbs of Chicago it's splatter from 1590 WCGO Evanston during the day. At night a mess of stations including WWRL which I've heard several times.

Msnassas, VA,

Semilocal WLXE Rockville, MD, 1 kW days, 500 W night. Spanish tropical format. Ar night, a mess with unidentified stations.

Mumbo jumbo in Central Mass. I think theres a NYC on 1600 but signal quality is no worth listening to.
OTOH there's a Key West 1600 that comes in OK along the Gulf Coast bet Ft Myers and sarasota, maybe further N. Signal quality degrades quickly as one goes inland. With my old car, a Pontiac Vibe, the station broadcasting sports at the time, was one of my presets. With my geezermobile, a black Crown Vic (sorry no handcuffs ladies), the signal is weaker. Maybe the car radio needs a shot of 'V."

Daytime here in Rochester NY is a very, very weak WEHH from Elmira Heights NY, about 110 miles south. At night and at sunrise/sunset, WWRL New York dominates.

SW Ohio

Has anyone I.D.'ed WKYF in Key West FL? It is listed as 500 watts NDA, day and night. Not your run of the mill station location.

Although I haven't DX'ed it much, 1600 is another of those station-rich frequencies here in Cincinnati.

Sunrise
WZZW Milton WV
WAOS Austell GA

Daytime
WTSZ Eminence KY (I believe it still parallels 1570 New Albany IN)

Sunset
KRVA Cockrell Hill TX ('09-did not get a positive I.D. on this one, but 90% sure)
WKFO Corbin KY
KATZ ST. Louis
KGYM Cedar Rapids IA
WWRL NY

Night
KPNP Watertown MN
WKZK N. Augusta SC
R. Reloj Cuba

Edit: added WWRL - occasional at night also.
Also noted Key West has been heard by vibe.

Dayton area, the former WBLY now Radio Maria's 1600 WULM (same calls used when Urban Light Ministries owned them). Lots of other stations make it through, including WMQM, Memphis (as late as 9am in the winter), KATZ in St. Louis and even have heard WWRL, New York underneath the 34 wat night signal very close to the tower.

In Orange County, TX it's KOGT 5AM to midnite. Noticed that after they signed off last nite it was WAOS Austell, GA, Atlanta area, booming in all morning with Spanish Language programming with very little fading. They obviously were still running their 20kw. Most times after midnite it's KATZ - Saint Louis.

Here on the fringe of downtown St. Petersburg, 1600 is splatter from strong local WRXB 1590 (licensed to St. Pete Beach, but antenna in St. Petersburg) at night depending on which way the radio is aimed, it's splatter from WRXB or any number of stations colliding with each other, including the 1600 from Key West.

At a second listening post (eastern Hernando county, FL) 50 miles due west of downtown Orlando, 1600 is a weak but consistent signal of WLAA, Winter Garden (about 10 miles west of downtown Orlando).

At night in eastern Hernando county, 1600 sounds like a graveyard channel.

I used to pull WKWF in Key West in Sarasota during the day, but that was 1980

Same here in the Naples area. WKWF was a regular catch here too some years back. It came in pretty much like a local. Although it is only a 500 watt station that signal had a straight shot into SW Florida over all that salt water. Now a days it is still possible to catch it during the daytime but as with all AM there is a lot of interference.

In Vermilion, OH:

Daytime 1600 is WTTF/Tiffin, OH with a weak to moderate signal carrying an oldies format.
Nighttime 1600 is a jumble of stations including a News/Talk station, a sports station, a Spanish music station and several others. Couldn't ID any of them though to tell where they are from.

Forgot we frequently get Spanish on 1600. Sometimes it sounded like the weekly sports show on WULM sounded like it originated from a Mexican restaurant certain months because of it

Here in Broward County FL, 1600 can either be WKWF Key West or WMNE Riviera Beach in the day, depending on how the Superadio is rotated. One needs a Select-a-Tenna for audibility on either.

Was at Cape San Blas, FL (that cape south of Tallahassee) this summer. It was WKWF (yes) battling KLEB Golden Meadow, La.

WKWF has to have the best 500 watts around!

Was in Bermuda in June 2005, and WWRL in NYC barely made it in...but again, this was daytime! And, at 1600 near the end of the dial, to boot!

Nighttime here on 1600, I can't deal!

Even though that's totally over water, hearing WKWF all the way up to Northern Florida is impressive.
