AM Frequency of the Week: 1600

Bellingham WA

All day all night it is border blaster KVRI Blaine WA. 50kW/10kW from a six tower array a few miles S of the Canadian border. Radio Punjab- mostly talk and some music. Programmed for the sizable Punjabi language speaking folks in Richmond/Surrey/Greater Vancouver BC market. Also a translator right on the border that frankly covers more of BC than WA. 🤪

Its more music when i hear it... they blast in here 1500 or so miles away, nightly. An engineer whos done some work on the towers there estimates its about 50kw erp in my direction

They seem to be mostly music from 8pm to 6am local, so that makes sense. Also not shocked by the signal getting up your way- you are pretty much in the main lobe.

West side of Houston TX

Days, slop from local KMIC 1590. KOGT in Orange TX was weakly heard before they went silent.
Sunset, KRVA in Vietnamese from DFW and KOKE from the Austin area are usually on top. KMIC slop is still pretty bad. I occasionally hear KUSH Cushing OK with Red Dirt country music, and have heard KIVA Albuquerque once or twice. I would expect to hear KLEB in Louisiana, but haven't heard them in a long time. KRVA seems to stay on day power fairly often, noted vy strong the other night while my power was off.
Night, a jumble with KOKE and KRVA usually on top.

Retro, from Tulsa OK in the 70's, the dominant station was KATZ St Louis with soul/r&b music. I also remember hearing KLEB on a DX test.

I think The Ragin' Cajun is still dark, Jim. It wasn't the best signal, but you could hear it well enough to ID it up in Pineville until a couple years ago. I don't think about it every time I do a driveway bandscan at the wife's folks house, when we head over for a visit, but I believe I'd have noticed if the swamp pop were back on 1600.

Central Kentucky:
Days: WLUE Eminence with a simulcast of 1350 WLOU, Louisville with R&B oldies. A fun station to listen to if you like old school "Soul" music, which I do. Original calls were WSTL and was a country station then.

Nights: a mix with St. Louis on top.

Retro: Back in 1981 I bought one of the first cordless phones available.

The transmit and receive were on two different frequencies one of which was around 1600 on AM. My GF then asked why my phone was "busy" at night. I had no idea. Apparently a lot of people said my phone had a busy signal at night.

So after dark, I picked up my cordless phone handset and clearly heard KATZ St. Louis on my cordless phone and it was holding my phone line open. Disconnect the cordless phone and problem disappeared.
Cordless phones were junk back then.....

When I was in Eastern Iowa, KGYM. Here in Kansas, I’ve never heard it, even at night, despite it having higher power than KCJJ.

In southern Iowa in the early 1970s, I would try to get KCRG (as KGYM was then, co-owned with KCRG-TV, which we got on cable, believe it or not) and could just barely do it. I was using a couple of mid-level Zenith radios; if I had a better receiver, I might have been able to do it.

A couple of 500-watt stations on 1600 had been squeezed into the general region: KTTN in Trenton, Mo. and KNCY in Nebraska City, Nebraska. They’re still around. KTTN has moved all its local programming to FM; I don’t know much about KNCY’s recent history.

1600 - WAOS - Austell (Atlanta) GA - La Favorita - Spanish -Mexican - 2017

1600 - WOKB - - Winter Garden FL - AM1600 - Black gospel 2009

1600 - KLEB - Golden Meadow LA - 1600 AM - The Ragin’ Cajun - 1999
The Raging Cajun used to be stronger here. Since their transmitter was destroyed in Hurricane Ida? I think, they're weaker, due to running less power at night.

Day: A weak to moderate KOKE "Tejano 1600" in Pflugerville, near Austin. During winter daytime skywave, KRVA in Cockrell Hill will mix in with Vietnamese-language programming.
KOKE is very strong in my NE Austin area, of course.
Haven't received KRVA in Vietnamese from DFW yet. Thought I was getting it the other night, but OTA didn't match their stream. Their stations are both DFW and HOU.
Believe it was Spanish language was receiving, but couldn't ID.
