AM Frequency of the Week - 1620 kHz

Now to try another X-Bander, what can you get on 1620 AM?

Here in Vermilion, OH it is blank during the daytime except for the occasional trace of WDND/South Bend, IN. At night it's all WDND here. Also, radio-locator indicates that WDND's pattern is ND but their signal pattern looks like a flying saucer. Anyone know why that is?
 
In Bellingham, WA, a super weak KYIZ Renton, WA
 
Only WDND South Bend and KOZN Bellevue, NE ever heard in southern Michigan.
 
In Monroe, WA - mostly the same (KYIZ weak during the day.) Nights I get KYIZ and KSMH West Sacramento, CA.

Judging by the way it's rendered, I would say the ground conductivity is much better to the south of the TX site versus the north.

Here in Baldwin Co., Ala., it's a very weak news/talker from Pensacola, WNRP. They must have one of the smallest coverage areas of any X-band station, day or night. I'm 28 miles west of their stick and it's almost non-existent here. At night I've lost it while still in the Pensacola city limits, and the city is only a few miles wide!

Despite being less than 30 miles from them, at night it's more common to hear WTAM from College Station, Texas.
 
From Houston - WTAM from College Station, Texas. Interesting, because it is the only HD-AM left anywhere near Houston. In spite of having a fairly strong signal in the house and car from Cypress, TX, I have never achieved HD lock for more than a second.

No reports of Radio Rebelde in Cuba??

Let me be the first....

Daytime, a TIS or two here in south Florida, along w/ Rebelde.

Nighttime, Rebelde dominates pretty much.

I believe Cuba set up some Rebelde's to jam Radio Republica, which used the mighty (all of 1 kW at night) WDHP in the Virgin Islands, which I think I used to hear. I have no idea if WDHP still leases out to Republica or not. I believe that Glenn Hauser's reports nailed the site of Republica.

Far northwest suburbs of Chicago...

Day....usually empty, but sometimes WDND on daytime skywave during cold weather months,

Night....usually nothing jumps out. Sometimes WDND is identifiable. I've listened for R. Rebelde, but no luck so far.

That's because the signal hits the sand dunes/sandy soil of extreme southwest Michigan. If you look at the patterns for the Chicago 50kw non-directional blowtorches, you'll see how this takes a bite out of all o those signals.

For a really oddball pattern, check out WSBT in South Bend....main null to the northeast. The coverage map otherwise reflects sand to the north....deep, rich, conductive Midwest soil to the south. You'll also notice that while the signal gets chewed up immediately to the north of the TX, the 5kw signal "does better" once it gets over Lake Michigan.

Oh yeah. I've heard WTAW College Station, TX too. My mistake!
 
From NE NC car radio. 1620 days nothing heard. Sunrise/sunset WDND Q93 South Bend, IN.
 
In Gary Indiana (Home) or in Merrillville Indiana (work), I get WDND South Bend during the day. At night, WDND tries to come in, but gets hammered by the few 1620's that are on the air.
 
Sometimes a little bit of very weak, scratchy-sounding Ibiquity spillover from KDZR if I have the receiver pointed right (funny how I can hear that, but I can barely receive either version of DZR itself 98% of the time); drifty-sounding mess of CA and WA stations, otherwise. I wouldn't be surprised (or would I?) if Rebelde's in there amongst them.
 
The CA station is KSMH; WA station is KYIZ.

Right up there with a place I used to work....WMIR. World's Most Ignored Radio.

BTW, Zach, I'm at our favorite place on the beach at the state line next month....Looking forward to hearing "what's up" on my radio. And, of course, if I get bored, or if DX conditions are just plain lousy....there's always that place immediately to the west of me! ;D
