AM Frequency of the Week: 1630

East Tennessee: Slim pickings, generally KCJJ or KKGM at night.
Retro/other: Western Ohio: KCJJ could hang in most of the day in the winter.

Denver, CO -
Nothing in the daytime.

Critical hours - 1630 KFBU Fox Farm, Wyoming (a Cheyenne suburb), with lots of fading. It's around 90-100 miles away from me. Christian Contemporary music.

Nights - As the night goes on, KFBU recedes and KKGM Fort Worth, TX (Black Information Network) comes in and out, never very strong but sometimes readable.

NE Georgia:
KCJJ Iowa City Iowa fading in and out with KKGM in Ft. Worth just about sunrise
Denver, CO -

KKGM used to fade in and out with KCJJ for me in Kansas, but for the last few months when I’ve gotten KCJJ I haven’t heard KKGM at all. When KFBU was Spanish, they used to interfere with KCJJ but that situation was fixed somehow.

Not that I was ever a Rolodex'ed aficionado in keeping track of matters, but I admittedly've been delinquent in documenting DX lists and dates since moving here to PA a few decades' back. In setting the Total Different Stations Heard In One Locale odometer back to 000 -- I actually was tempted to set it back to just 00 at first -- some earlier NE PA catches have understandably gone into the spread sheet without what many would consider proper diligence and specifications*.

Anyway: Two 1630's are in the log. Both at night. KCJJ Iowa on 12-3-99 and what I entered as 'KDIA', that date and year unknown.
A similar bookkeeping oversight applies to 'KDIA's case as well. Their history has them with some other calls around then. But I'd heard R&B plus enough ID-ale talk (weather, time checks, ads) sufficient to count them as 'KDIA'.
Can someone tell me what year they were on 1630? See, I *do* have 'KDIA' logged on 1640 as well -- from 2-10-98 -- and am fuzzy as to which frequency they occupied first.

* Even back in Queens, some 1500+ stations ago logged (and by the worst of the four who spun dial back in those days) : Why would I bother with fondly framing the first time I ever heard WBZ, or WBBM, or WSB? All they did after a short while was get in the way of other stations. And those same three plus OTHERS have followed me here to get in the way of other stations. Grrr.

South Mississippi:

Day: nothing
Night: KKGM Fort Worth, TX - Black Information Network
Occasionally, there will be The Mighty 1630 KCJJ Iowa City with good local news, weather, and Hot Adult Contemporary music

Here in Wood Dale, IL in the near NW suburb of Chicago:

Daytime: WQHF741, the O'Hare International Airport TIS with solid signal.
Nighttime: KCJJ rules 1630 at night.

DX/Retro: besides the O'Hare TIS, the Midway Airport TIS (WQHF736) was also heard. Way back in 1990's METRA used to operate bunch of TIS stations as well on this frequency. I used to hear the one in Roselle, IL quite well. They are still listed in the FCC database, but I have not heard them in a long time. KVAM (KKWY, KRND) used to be quite common and good way to log Wyoming, but I have not noted it in a while. Others on 1630 heard are KKGM (Ft. Worth, TX) when they they used to be KNAX, and two stations no longer broadcasting on 1630 kHz, WRDW (Augusta, GA) and KXBT (Vallejo, CA). WRDW left the air in 2019 and KXBT moved back to 1640 kHz where it originally started and is now KDIA.

Clifton, New Jersey

Days/Nights: I get nothing during day. At night, I receive a weak signal of KCJJ "The Mighty 1630 KCJJ" Iowa City, IA.

Retro: There was a 10-watt travelers information station, WPYJ708 Clifton, NJ. It initially aired local announcements, but later became a simulcast of NOAA Weather radio station KWO35 New York, NY. It signed off in January 2021.

From NW San Antonio:

Day: Blank. But once during a rare summer daytime skywave opening in August 2019, I heard KKGM in Ft. Worth. Back then it was a southern gospel station.

Sunset: It's KKGM with a good, steady signal.

Night: On night power, KKGM is less steady here and subject to occasional fades. At rare times, KCJJ will appear underneath. Aiming NW I can get a partial null of KKGM and hear a weak KFBU in Fox Farm, WY, with Christian pop/talk; sometimes it will come to the fore briefly.

Sunrise: Prior to my local sunrise, KCJJ strengthens when it goes to day power and can overtake KKGM for short bits. Eventually KKGM is strong again when it's back to day power.

DX/Retro: I've heard XEUT in Tijuana a couple of times at night when aiming W/NW. The station went online-only in 2022.

West side of Houston TX,

Daytime, nothing
Sunset and night, KKGM usually on top, KCJJ sometimes gives them a run for their money. Later, I’ve heard KFBU a few times but never strong.

From the southwest suburbs of Chicago ...

KCJJ Iowa City, occasionally daytime, especially in winter, and at night, but ...
Often covered by the Midway Airport TIS, 10-watt WQZM859, transmitting from atop the parking garage on 55th Street.
One other heard here in 1630, albeit in my car while coming in and out of the Midway barker's range: KKGM Fort Worth, late on a February evening in 2023.

DFW, Texas

Daytime: Local KKGM with BIN programming.
Nights:
KKGMTXFt. WorthLOCAL News Talk
KVAMWYCheyennePraise music weak in slight KKGM null
KCJJIAIowa CityWeak mixing with KVAM. Local KKGM off the air.
