AM Frequency of the Week: 1640

Carmichael, CA

Daytime: KDIA Vallejo with a Weak Signal
Nighttime: KDIA Vallejo with a Weak Signal

Vallejo, CA

Day & Night KDIA Vallejo

East Tennessee: Critical hours/night WSJP, Sussex, WI or KZLS, Enid OK.
Retro/other: Ohio. WSJP could stay in all day in the winter.

Denver, CO -
Day and night - spillover from local 1650 KBJD.

(Steve Green is on line viewing the bikini ads atop the DX Forum)

1640 is as far up as the main rig GE SR 2 can go by itself. There's no yen here for me to do a biopsy on its capacitor, since its 'stock' frequency determination has been dicey enough as it is. But its 1640 has given me three for the log, all of them at night.
That widely-heard Dallas-Fort Worth airport thing (WQO767) was one, probably the first one logged (might someone here have a date for when it was coast-to-coast? Even a year?).
KDIA was next, 2-10-98. Eighteen years later, a WTNI from some place in Mississippi made it in here.

Tyler, TX:

The only thing I have logged on 1640 is a weak to fair Fox Sports Radio KZLS Enid, OK, and that pops up mostly in the early mornings and evenings. Night time has yielded nothing of note here.

Is Cyberdad OK? Seens like several weeks since he's stopped in and hosted the festivities.

The bikini on the far left of the ad certainly doesn't leave much to the imagination. I am a little concerned with the photoshopping error on her right inner-thigh, however.

I don't know if anyone knows Cyberdad personally or is in email contact with him. I thought he had talked about work trips.

Here in Wood Dale, IL in the near NW suburb of Chicago:

Daytime: WSJP with weak signal
Nighttime: mostly WSJP, but WTNI sometimes makes it through.

DX/RETRO: KDIA used to be an easy catch before WSJP (then WAZI/WKSH) signed on. KZLS (Enid, OK) used to be logged frequently, but it's been a while since I heard them. Back in late 1990's there were two Dallas Ft. Worth Airport TIS stations (WPLR660) on 1640 kHz and 1680 kHz that really got out well. Both were easily received in the Chicago area. Not sure if they are still in operation, but they are certainly no longer heard around here. Also back in 1997 there used to be a pirate going by the name Radio Zero that I heard on couple occasions. Still trying to log Oregon (KDZR) and Utah (KBJA) on this frequency.

Hope Cyberdad is ok and we will hear from him soon.

Well it been like 3 months

Just concerned
Unless somebody's in touch with him by eMail I don't know what we can do. I'm thinking should something happen to me my wife would have no idea to give this group a heads up or how....guess I need to leave that in my instructions. Hopefully it's nothing like that.

I opted not to do another round of FM FotW just because of the 3-year committment. If we continue to not hear from Cyberdad, I can help with the AM side temporarily.

The thing is Cyberdad always Upin old threads & Pin New Ones

David can't help, he's on other threads..I asked him, Nothing...

I think Cyber is the only Mod on this Forum

Located in Seattle-Tacoma metro area.

Days: 1640 is hiss and some splash from 1620 KYIZ. Nights it's a mix. Generally KDZR Portland, along with KDIA and sometimes a bit of KBJA Salt Lake City.

In 2012-2015, in its Radio Disney days, KDZR would sometimes be in as late as 10 a.m. or later.

South Mississippi:

Day: WTNI Biloxi, MS - Bob 106.3 was the replacement for WVMI 570, which was deleted in 2003. WTNI first aired the Talk News Information format that was on 570. WTNI hasn't been on since Summer 2022 but is still licensed. It was simulcast with WANG 1490, which is still on along with the translator.
Night: usually very weak KZLS Enid, OK - CTB Sports,
and rarely WSJP Sussex, WI - Relevant Radio

I’ve been wondering about Cyberdad for quite a while. Since he’s a moderator I’d think that Lance or David would have some idea, but for some reason they’ve not chimed in. Though I’m not a frequent poster, I’ve enjoyed this forum for many, many years and the easy going community here, much of that vibe fostered by Cyberdad.

1640

From NW San Antonio:

Day: Normally nothing, but KZLS in Enid, OK, sometimes makes an appearance when there is daytime skywave.

Sunset: KZLS comes up with a fairly good signal.

Night: After dropping to night power/pattern, KZLS is less stable but is still listenable. When propagation is very good, I can aim NW and hear a weak KBJA in Sandy, UT.

Sunrise: KZLS is back stronger until it fades along with the skywave.

DX/Retro: I've managed to hear WSJP in Sussex, WI, once (at night) and KDIA in Vallejo, CA, three times (twice at sunrise and once at night). Also, at night I regularly used to be able to null out KZLS by aiming E/W and hear WTNI in Biloxi, MS, before it went silent.

I'm also concerned about Cyberdad and am hoping we hear from him soon...

Clifton, New Jersey

Days/Nights: I receive 10-watt travelers information station, WQBX398 Paterson, NJ. It used to air local announcements, but it is now a simulcast of NOAA Weather radio station KWO35 New York, NY.

Daytime, nothing
Sunset, KZLS Enid OK starts to come in. Before they went silent, WTNI was strong as well if I aimed the radio E-W
Night and sunrise, it's KZLS.

In the wintertime, KZLS can often be heard 2+ hours before sunset and 2+ hours after sunrise.

From the southwest suburbs of Chicago ...

WSJP Sussex, Wis., in the middle of a cold November 2015 night; and WTNI Biloxi, Miss., on a similar night in December 2020. Both with a C. Crane radio.
