AM Frequency of the Week 1650

Northwest suburban Chicago area:....

Days: Usually blank. Sometimes KCNZ from Cedar Falls, IA makes it in from Cedar Falls, IA on daytime skywave. Even m,ore raarely, CINA makes the 500+ mile hop from Toromto on 5kw daytime power.

Nights: KCNZ is reliable and usually alone. I've also heard CINA underneath a few times,

Other location; This past month, I heard KCNZ a couple of nights at the place where we stay near Pensacola. Weak to fair signal, but alone, First time catch there for me.

Hello again....

1650 KHz - WQDW634 - Melbourne FL - City of Melbourne - NWS weather, anmts. - LP TIS station.

This constantly broadcasts only "white noise" with only occasional NWS audio.This originally carried recorded municipal announcements as well....
I guess no one knows how to fix it or turn it off....it probably isn't heard too far away....

The only other 1650 KHz was
1650 - KWHN - Fort Smith AR - Newstalk 1650 - The News Voice of Arkahoma - 2003

Here in Wood Dale, IL in the near NW suburb of Chicago:

Daytime: usually empty, but Evanston, IL TIS (WPXZ497) sometimes audible with weak signal
Nighttime: KCZN dominates the frequency

DX/RETRO: did hear KGXL (Costa Mesa, CA) back in 1998 with all traffic format. They switched to KFOX with Korean language programming, but not heard with that format. Also heard KBJD (Denver, CO), KWHN (Ft. Smith, AR), WHKT (Portsmouth, VA) and CINA (Mississauga, ON). Back in early 2000's the Aurora, IL HAR/TIS with Chicago weather forecasts used to be common during daytime, but not heard lately.

East Tennessee: Daytime is blank, with either WJFY or CINA sneaking in toward evening. Night would be either the above too or KFSW Fort Smith AR.

From the southwest suburbs of Chicago...

Days: Nothin'.

Nights: Three stations have been noted: KYHN Fort Smith, Ark., overnight 11/25/2015; KCNZ Cedar Falls, Iowa, after daybreak 11/25/2015 (subsequently a regular); CINA Mississauga, Ont., overnight 12/7/2020.

KCNZ was the dominant station last night, with CINA and its 680 nighttime watts audible underneath.

DFW, Texas

Daytime: In the immediate N. Dallas area, its "Oldies Radio", a pirate or part 15 station that sounds just like a 60's Top 40 station, including the vintage ads. Rare at my location, which is ~20 miles distance.

Nights: KCNZ Cedar Falls, IA is the dominant station with sports. Aiming E/W, KSVE El Paso is harder to hear, but usually there. Occasionally, I'll pick up a bit of Southern Gospel from KFSW Ft. Smith, AR, which is surprisingly hard to hear given it relative closeness at 226 miles.

From west Houston:

Daytime: nothing
Sunset/night: KCNZ is the most common, with KSVE El Paso often there at sunset. I've also heard KBJD Denver on occasion. I used to regularly hear XEARZ Mexico City before they moved to 1320 in 2021.
Sunrise: haven't checked recently, but KSVE and KBJD have often been heard in the past.

I've never ID'd KFSW.

From NW San Antonio:

Day: Normally nothing. On New Year's Day 2018 I logged Spanish-language sports KSVE in El Paso via daytime skywave. It's my furthest daytime catch at 488 miles.

Sunset: KCNZ in Cedar Falls comes up regularly. Aiming W-NW, KSVE and Spanish-language Christian KBJD in Denver sometimes come up weakly.

Night: There's a lot of variation depending on propagation. KCNZ is sometimes strong and steady and sometimes weak. To the W-NW, it's the same with both KSVE and KBJD.

Sunrise: KCNZ is stronger. KSVE is rock solid when it goes to day power and is the last to fade.

DX/Retro: Around 4 a.m. this past Wednesday morning, I heard CINA in Mississauga fade up for a few minutes with South Asian music that matched the station's webstream. I've never heard it before or since. KFSW is another one-time catch that happened one sunrise in December 2015.

XEARZ was a nighttime regular here before it switched frequencies. Also, back in 2016 I heard the SAC beacon a few times at night when Southern Avionics Company in Beaumont, TX, was doing NDB testing.

Swan, Texas (near I-20, 90mi E of Dallas): "The Cross" KSFW Fort Smith, AR. with a weak to fair to nonexistent signal, depending on conditions. Usually, the only occupant at 1650, with Fort Smith around 260 miles north of here, but I have KCNZ from Cedar Rapids logged at night. Not one of the better, or notable, dial positions here. Never have I caught El Paso or Mexico City, but they sure would make for a nice feather in the ol' hat. Too bad about the move of XEARZ to 1320. KXYZ puts a hitch in that particular giddy up for me.

Nighttime, I've heard NOAA TISs from the Oregon Coast and possibly one from further south.

Usually I hear KBJD Denver (Spanish language religion & praise), often the only broadcast station on the channel; I've heard KFOX L.A. a few times, it sometimes makes an appearance with Korean programming; I've heard KSVE El Paso at least once when it was ESPN Deportes (on my SRIII); KYHN Ft Smith once in the early 2010's (needed a loop with my SRIII to resolve that one); KCNZ Cedar Rapids at least twice; the others have been perennial no-shows.

Chicago by the Lakeshore:

Daytime: usually quiet, unless CINA in the Toronto area is having daytime skywave.

Nighttime: CINA generally rules the frequency. One time I managed to squeak in CKZW in Montreal.

Critical hours: KCNZ in Cedar Rapids can show up, but it's usually CINA then as well.

I have in the log here that 1650 station ; it's usually a SSS regular. The COL was 'Portsmouth', from what I recall.
Poster Cordelia Chase to this forum will know far better and will know the market's current casual moniker, but stations in the region often referred to as 'Tidewater' have changed facilities and call latters so much that yet it remains as as one place.
WNOR 1230 used to begin their newscasts with things like 'Good morning, Mr and Mrs Norfolk .... Portsmouth, Newport News, Hampton, Chesapeake, Virginia Beach, and all the ships at sea.'
