AM Frequency of the Week: 1650

These both have to've been off the long-gone Lafayette HA600a.

From west Houston TX

Daytime, nothing
Sunset, KCNZ starts to come up. Occasionally, I hear KFSW Ft Smith AR with gospel music. Closer to Denver sunset, KBJD enters the mix as well
Nights, KCNZ, KBJD, and KFSW are usually all in the mix. Back in 2018 I heard XEARZ Mexico City with "beautiful music" before they went silent
Sunrise, Same as night, sometimes joined by KSVE El Paso with TUDN sports in Spanish

Here in Wood Dale, IL in the near NW suburb of Chicago:

Daytime: usually empty, but Evanston, IL TIS (WPXZ497) sometimes audible with weak signal
Nighttime: KCZN dominates the frequency

DX/RETRO: did hear KGXL (Costa Mesa, CA) back in 1998 with all traffic format. They switched to KFOX with Korean language programming, but not heard with that format. Also heard KBJD (Denver, CO), KWHN (Ft. Smith, AR), WHKT (Portsmouth, VA) and CINA (Mississauga, ON). Back in early 2000's the Aurora, IL HAR/TIS with Chicago weather forecasts used to be common during daytime, but not heard lately.

Located in Seattle area.

Days, static.

Night, usually KBJD Denver, with weak mix of NOAA station(s) from Oregon Coast, and other stations that have appeared from time to time:
KSVE El Paso, just once, when it was still Deportes. This was in 2012-2016 or so, on my SRIII with a loop.
KCNZ Cedar Falls, Iowa at least 5-6 times since the 2010's.
KFOX Los Angeles with Korean maybe 4-5 times, especially during Auroral conditions.
The station in Fort Smith I heard once, in 2013. I think they were news-talk at the time. They were KYHN, and I heard them playing Red Eye Radio.

Clifton, New Jersey

Days: Mostly splatter from WWRU "AM 1660 K-Radio" Jersey City, NJ.

Nights: It's usually CINA "CINA Radio" Mississauga, ON with some splatter from WWRU. I have also received WJFV "WJFV AM 1650" Portsmouth, VA.

From NW San Antonio:

Day: Blank, but once, back in 2018, I logged KSVE (TUDN sports) in El Paso during winter daytime skywave.

Sunset: KSVE and KCNZ in Cedar Falls, IA, come up, with the latter strongest. Occasionally KBJD (Radio La Red) in Denver will pop up with a weak signal.

Night: KSVE has a fairly strong and consistent signal. If I aim NE, I can get a partial null and hear KCNZ in/out and less often KFSW in Ft. Smith, AR.

Sunrise: KCNZ and KFSW are heard more often when they go to day power/pattern. KSVE still dominates, though, and hangs around for a good bit after sunrise.

DX/Retro: I logged CINA in Mississauga, ON, once back in March 2023. Also, XEARZ in Mexico City used to be a nighttime regular before it was moved to 1320.

Something weird is going on with KSVE's transmitter. On most nights in recent months, its signal suddenly changes at some point to a loud tone. It usually remains that way all night until some time after sunrise, when it switches back to normal programming.

From the southwest suburbs of Chicago ...

KYHN Fort Smith, Ark. (just before a call change); KCNZ Cedar Falls, Iowa (a regular if I pay attention to the frequency); and CINA Mississauga, Ont., punching above its weight of 680 nighttime watts.

DFW, Texas

Daytime: Very weak Oldies Radio, with vintage commercials and 60's/70's format. Located in North Dallas, comes up on the car radio when I reach Lewisville.
When I travel west towards I-35W, WRUX736 comes up as "Information Radio" located in Haslet north of Fort Worth.
Nights:
KCNZIACedar Falls1650 The Fan CBS Sports radio.
KFSWARFt. SmithSouthern gospel // stream very weak under KCNZ
KSVETXEl PasoSpanish // stream weak in KCNZ null
KBJDCODenverRadio LaRed ID, fair to good in Spanish
