AM Frequency of the week: 1690

I seem to remember "Dusty Radio" being much later, after a stint as . WGCI (AM), and maybe still with those calls.

Funny, I seem to remember "Dusty Radio" later than 1984 also. Maybe what happened is they kept the format and changed the calls to extend the WGCI brand. After 34 years, it's a little tough to remember for sure.

What I DO remember is that I worked out of an office in downtown Chicago 1979-82. I had a little Panasonic portable that I usually alternated between WVON "dusties", WFYR (103,5-Adult Contemp/Oldies), and WXFM (106,9 - jazz/standards). Being about 7 miles from the WVON stick(s), and with the signal aimed right at me, it came in every bit as well as the 50kw blowtorches.

Back OT.... The current WVON on 1690 has a good signal in downtown Chicago as well. But IME, at night, by the time you get halfway to O'Hare airport on the Kennedy Expressway, you often start to hear the other stuff on the channel underneath

From NW San Antonio…

Daytime: nothing

Nighttime: KDMT dominates with a fairly steady signal. I sometimes get slop from 1700 KKLF in Richardson (near Dallas) when it’s booming in. Occasionally, in the partial null of KDMT I'll hear WVON coming through. Also, ever since WMLB went off air, WPTX comes up weakly at times and is now heard more often than WVON.

DX: I’ve logged CHTO in Toronto only a couple of times. When propagation is really good, I can sometimes hear a very weak station mixing with KDMT and when it fades. At times it has featured Spanish-language Christian music, Asian-language talk, and Russian talk. I’m assuming it’s KFSG, although I’ve never heard any ID.
