AM Frequency of the week - 1710 kHz

Still haven't heard anything on 1710, at least here in Yakima. The closest I've heard is a faint carrier towards the east. The Hudson County NJ TIS is still operating along with one at the Springfield Armory in MA, and occasional pirates.

Is anyone hearing the "Radio Retén" SS Christian pirate on 1710 at night? It's been around for at least a few months. The station puts a weak to moderate signal into the San Antonio area at night.

Oops...forgot to mention that this station is in Baton Rouge, LA.

Interesting that WRHL was in that group that you were hearing. Almost certainly daytime skywave. 250 watts and very directional to the west. I'm 40 miles northeast of Rochelle, and I never hear it. Here, daytime, it's WHFB from Benton Harbor, MI. Weak, but completely alone. It's one of those stations that, when it goes to 50-watts night power (same "severe" pattern as daytime), you can be within sight of the towers and still not hear it!

I think that's right. I would have expected to hear the 1060 from Preston, MN, if anything, but got WRHL. I think also if I was hearing WLW and WKAR at 2 PM, those must be daytime skywave too, I would guess. Even as strong as WLW is, it doesn't usually make it here.

Interesting that you post this, because I heard this while in a parking lot in Gulf Shores, AL, a few weeks ago:

It sounded like Christian-y Spanish programming but no one I asked knew anything about a station in Baton Rouge.

Since this thread is so old, I can also update something I mentioned back in 2012. The old digital noise that I heard wasn't the US Navy, it was WLO Shipcom radio in Coden, Alabama. They apparently had something just above the AM band back in the 90's doing RTTY or SITOR-B and I was hearing part of that.

Since becoming a full blown shortwave radio listener, I've picked up several other broadcasts from WLO on HF, albeit weakly since they're only about 30 air miles from me.
