AM Frequency of the Week: 580

From NW San Antonio:
A few times in past years I've heard KJMJ "Radio Maria" in Alexandria, LA, and news/talk KRFE in Lubbock, TX, at night.
That Radio Maria station may be the Spanish Christian one I hear early a.m. here in Austin maybe for an hour after sunrise, after WIBW departs.
Couldn't identify it or confirm with web streams.

At night only, WIBW Topeka comes in regularly, sometimes strong, here in Austin, Texas.

It has a monster nighttime signal.

KJMJ is an English-language station. You might be hearing KSAZ, a Spanish-language Christian station in Marana, AZ.

Are you sure it’s a Christian station? If it’s not, you could be hearing XELRDA in Piedras Negras.

In Houston, XELRDA is the only Spanish language regularly heard here on 580 and they are usually strong around sunrise, mixing w/KJMJ's Catholic programs and WIBW.

Yes, that was it, XELRDA, 580 from Piedras Negras, Coahuila, just across the Rio Grande. Ranchera music. I got it mixed up with another station.

From the southwest suburbs of Chicago ...

WILL Urbana is the daytime 5kW regular and sometimes can be heard with NPR programs at 100 watts. Others over the years: WIBW Topeka; WCHS Charleston, W.Va., most recently on 4/5/2020 with NBC News Radio; KMJ Fresno, Calif., with its old 5kW pattern; CKY Winnipeg (R.I.P.); WELO Tupelo, Miss.; and WXRH Rockwood, Tenn., on day power at 10:30 p.m. 1/16/2022.

Orange County, TX If I'm not having a senior moment, I seem to remember WIBW sharing the freq with another facility

WIBW shared time with KKSU, Kansas State's station. KKSU got from about 12:30-5:30pm.
That changeover of KKSU splitting from the shared frequency was a big controversy in 2001.
I use to work in the ag industry, which was highly connected to both stations. I heard the inside story from a WIBW employee.

WIBW did so much for K-State, which ran KKSU for 5 hours in the afternoon beginning at 12:30 p.m., but then KSU chooses a rival football network to broadcast its sporting events. WIBW had broadcast K-State games forever.

WIBW countered by threatening to end the timeshare. Money was also involved. I believe a court case or settlement occurred.

Until then, KSU had a powerful AM radio station which covered the state and could broadcast its ag and other programming including classical music.

After the change, KSU Extension relied on mailing cassettes and other programs to radio stations running ag programs, assume satellite programming later.

The KSU decision to go against WIBW-the KS Ag Network left many bitter feelings and hurt KSU. All for $$.

Here's KSU's news release on this. Notice "litigation."
Recall other online stories in 2002, but don't want to spend time searching.
K-State Reaches Agreement With WIBW - Kansas State University Athletics

Director of Athletics Tim Weiser and University President Dr. Jon Wefald announced Friday that Morris Communications has agreed to pay KSU $1,500,000 for KSU's five hours of shared broadcast time. Morris Communications releases all broadcasting rights in connection with KSU Football and WIBW will cease broadcast of KSU football games immediately. All litigation between Morris Communications and KSU, including the trademark lawsuit, is to be dismissed. The settlement is contingent upon FCC approval. The transfer of the five hours from KKSU to WIBW takes place upon the expiration of a transition period of 90 days.
...

this has been a business matter and I wish WIBW nothing but the very best and appreciate the professional manner in which they have conducted themselves during this difficult period."

President Jon Wefald said, "I am very pleased with the settlement between Kansas State University and Morris Communications. The negotiations between the two parties were very complex, but this settlement represents at win-win for the Kansas State University department of athletics, the College of Agriculture, KKSU and its many listeners, and for Morris Communications, WIBW and its many listeners. This is what we have been seeking all the way along and we are pleased that we could reach this mutual accord."

Night: It's still XELRDA dominating for the most part. WIBW mixes in more strongly, especially in the now partial null, and sometimes it will take over. Aiming NE/SW I'll occasionally hear a weak XEAV in Tlaquepaque underneath playing English-language classic hits.
WIBW is more consistent here, in central Texas northeast of Austin.
XELRDA has also arrived, but not as consistently as 580-WIBW Topeka.

From NW San Antonio:

Sunrise: Similar to nighttime. On occasion, XEAV will come up stronger when it goes to day power. Aiming NW, I usually hear a weak KUBC "The Canyon" in Montrose, CO, with classic rock for a bit after it goes to day power.
This a.m., around 7, was picking up KUBC. Heard it play the opening of BTO's Taking Care of Business from 1974. Expected the sound to lower and 580-WIBW hosts to begin talking, but the song never ended. So I searched online and matched KUBC's web stream.

A nice surprise as I usually only receive WIBW and the Mexcian.
