AM Frequency of the Week: 630


KIDD 1 Kw out of Monterey plays classical music, but I can't pick it up. I think it's because of the Sunol Grade, but I'm not sure. Maybe someone with knowledge of the Bay Area's geography could answer that one. At night I get KPLY out of Reno (5 Kw, 1 Kw), Fox Sports Radio.

They have an STA for 300 watts day and 250 watts night diplexed into the KNRY 1240 tower.. and thats a bit short for 630, so it won't be that efficient and make the signal even a bit worse then the already lower power is

Remember, though, that 500 watts on 630 covers better than 10 kw on 1500.
 
Dade City Fl. September 15,2020. 630khz.has been open, since WBMQ Savanah, GA 470 watts night. Cuban station has issues poor signal.
Received KYFI Saint Louis most every night 9 pm EST. Occasionally WSBN Washington, DC. Transmitter relocated last October. Also reduced signal quality was easy but now is difficult to receive.
To conclude 630 kHz is one of the quietest frequencies here in Central Florida. Wondering why WBMQ is restricted to 470watts? Even A-1 once clear channel frequencies have become jambed with high powered Cuban, Mexican and other Latin American stations jamming US stations that had once dominated those A-1 frequencies.
 
WBMQ is having some issues with their signal. I think they might be OTA or on very low power. What usually is a blaster daytime into Charleston is now barely audible, if at all.

WBMQ 630 Savanah, GA off the air. If so, can someone in WBMQ listening area try to see what stations are received after sundown on 630? Impressively quiet here in Central Florida Dade City.
 
Here in west central Georgia, WLAP Lexington KY is regularly heard in the evening on 630 with a pretty good signal. I've also caught WSPN Washington DC and KSLR San Antonio TX from time to time on 630.

I drove through the Savannah area 2 weeks ago and WBMQ was not on the air at all to my surprise.
 
Did you ever receive WPRO, Providence, RI. Covers most of New Engand at night. On 630 am since 1924. If near Atlantic coast of South Carolina you will have a good chance to receive it.

As the regulars here know, I traveled in my work for many years before transitioning into retirement beginning in 2012, In my travels, your part of Florida was only an occasional stop. Not frequent enough to be able to suggest what you might hear thes days with WBMQ off. In the Northern part of the Florida peninsula, as well as in the Panhandle, I'd often here the 630 from Saint Louis (ex-KXOK, ex-KJSL). 5kw with a lot of their night signal aimed south. If the channel is relatively empty at your location, you might be able hear it. Perhaps also WLAP from Lexington, KY, as someone else has mentioned. Maybe even the 630 from Washington DC...although I think most of their night signal goes southeast towards the Atlantic.

I'll be curious to know what you eventually come up with/

The 630 facility in San Juan which rebuilt about 12 years ago gets quite a few reports from the Southeast, so if you hear Spanish, don't automatically think "Cuba" as NotiUno is also all talk and news, but with a more rapid pace delivery.

The 630 in St Louis was an easy catch in New Orleans when I used to visit family there in the 60s thru the 80s.
 
Thanks very much for your response 2 the reception report on 630 KHZ. I will keep you posted. I have been into am + fm broadcast band dxing since I was 10 years old. A lot has changed over the years.
 
630 is pretty inactive for me in eastern Iowa. I usually hear CFCO at night, sometimes quite faintly. KYFI St. Louis occasionally. Have heard the 630 from San Antonio on very rare occasions.
 
Instead of the usual WLAP from Lexington KY I heard religious programming and singing from KYFI in St. Louis MO last night here in west central Georgia. Pretty good signal. Another station to add to my 630 am list.

Maybe with luck I can catch WUNO from Puerto Rico if I keep trying....
