AM Frequency of the Week: 630

Retro: In the '60's KXOK was one of my "DX" stations I'd listen to when they were Top 40
Me too, listening from Tulsa. The night DJ Mason Lee Dixon was great. Amazing how those stations on regional frequencies got out back then.

Even more notable in retrospect was the evening newscaster, Cleo Lewright. He worked during the day as a high-school teacher and coach and worked at KXOK in the evenings. He was the first Black newscaster on the station. He passed away from a heart attack around 1974 while still in his 50s. (When I get back home, I can look up more about him.)

Got KHOW Denver the other morning.
Was moving up and down the dial. When I hit 630 from San Antonio, after turning my Grundig here in Austin, Texas, KHOW came in.
Good catch never caught before.

Captured KYFI (ex KXOK) St. Louis the other night, late, around 1 a.m. CT.
Checked the stream and matched the Unshackled gospel radio drama it was airing. A good drama which I use to listen to more until I moved away from conservative radio, political talk or "Christian."

At first, thought it was KSLR San Antonio, which was nowhere to be heard. KSLR's stream was a typical brokered national ministry heard on almost every other similar station.

Looking at estimated nighttime patterns, it's not surprising 630s from Denver and St. Louis come in here in central TX, but it's still a treat as never received those before.

Plan to turn my Grundig Yachtboy more often to null the dominant signals. Learned that trick from reading the posts here.

I had been nulling, but mostly 660 to get KTNN Window Rock AZ and some others, like 880, to see if can get New York or 640, to see if can catch LA, but no dice.

Arizona, not New Mexico. Window Rock (35°40′14″N 109°03′50″W) is the the seat of the government of the Navajo Nation.

Back to our regular programing.

Correct. It's just on the other side of the AZ NM border, and with all the scenic Red Rocks from Grants NM to past the state line after Gallup, NM, Defiance, Lupton, easy to mistake.

Chatham’s CFCO (630 AM) has applied to the
Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission to move to the FM band, 91.3 MHz with an effective radiated power (ERP) of 1,250 watts (non-directional antenna with an effective height of the antenna above average terrain [EHAAT] of 132.7 metres). If approved, the AM frequency (630) would be abandoned.

That's a big nighttime coverage area Detroit area north.

From the southwest suburbs of Chicago ...

KXOK St. Louis; WLAP Lexington, Ky.; CFCO Chatham, Ont.; CKRC Winnipeg; KHOW Denver; and CMHQ Santa Clara, Cuba (50 kW, so it's said). Nothing new here in ages.

At night, am receiving KHOW more here in the Austin, Texas area, seemingly more than in the past. San Antonio seems to disappear. Have even gotten St. Louis, which, at times, is stronger than San Antonio.

Earlier tonight, KSLR San Antonio came in, albeit weakly, with KHOW heard at a very low level when nulled.
Later in the evening, closer to 11 p.m. CT in central TX, KHOW was on, still weak, but KSLR was nowhere to be heard.
