AM Frequency of the Week - 640 kHz

What do you all get on 640 AM?

Here in Vermilion, OH it is semi-local WHLO/Akron, OH with a news/talk format. At night the channel is more of a mess with WHLO sometimes on top but I've also heard IDs for WWJZ/Mt. Holly, NJ (Radio Disney) and WOI/Ames, IA (Public Radio). I think I've heard the Cuban before as well with Aurora is active. Still trying for KFI with no luck.

In the near north Chicago suburbs it's a fair WMFN during the day & in a mix at night. WOI used to come in weak days before WMFN took over in the 90s. At night it's a big mess with WMFN usually on top with Cuba and a host of others including Moore, OK, WOI, & less often WHLO. I used to hear KFI regularly, but haven't heard it here in a long time.

Nothing days. Nights it's KFI and sometimes Radio Progreso in Cuba. Might've heard KGVW once but never got an ID. This 640, in Belgrade, MT, is now silent.

Here in Columbus, 640 is all WHLO during the day (not particularly strong but certainly listenable) and a mess at night. If anything makes it through, it's a Cuban.

In eastern Iowa, it's WOI from Ames, IA all day. Nights are usually a weaker WOI, often with KWPN Moore, OK mixed in. KFI is an extreme rarity, but I have heard it on occasion in recent years at night.

Far Northwest Suburbs of Chicago.....

Day: WMFN weak. Occasional WTMJ splatter

Night: Used to be mostly blank, but sometimes KFI. WHLO once in a while around sunset. Now it's usually a mess, with WMFN, Cuba, or WOI most likely to end up on top.

WWJZ is only about 20 miles or so away; with 50kW days and a reasonable directional pattern it's a monster. The 950 watt night signal is not so awesome, but it gets out reasonably well in the southern half of New Jersey.

From Tampa .....

Daytime - Fairly good signal from the Cuban station.

Nighttime - Mostly the Cuban station with an occasional brief appearance by WVLG The Villages. KFI will make an appearance once in a great while too.

I'm very surprised that I can't even hear a trace of WVLG during the daytime.

It's 70 miles away 930 watts non directional on a low frequency too.

Interestingly, WVLG comes in quite well daytime out on Honeymoon Island at the gulf which is the same distance from their transmitter.

Houston daytime - extremely faint Spanish language - unidentified. Night - mixture of Spanish language and other.

In St. Louis:

Daytime: too much splatter from local KYFI-630.
Sunset: usually WCRV.
Nighttime: mostly Cuba, with WCRV, WOI and KWPN sneaking in. Only once have I been able to snag KFI, that was around 5:30 Central time one winter morning.

Wondering if the Spanish you're hearing is Cuba. I spent the last week in the Pensacola area, and 640 (along with 670) are the strongest Cubans 24/7.

On the outskirts of the KFI signal (San Bernardino, Redlands, Moreno Valley) the Hidalgo del Parral, Chih., station sometimes dominates, with the Cd. Juárez station behind them both. Worth considering.

Cyberdad, I assume that WSCR rarely makes an appearance in the Pensacola area with the Cuban station being so strong.

KFI daytime would be remarkable - although I have done 1000 mile daytime reception with a large loop antenna in Lubbock, and ground conductivity there is excellent. There are also relatively few strong locals compared to Houston.

I'm pretty far inland - about 80 miles. Daytime Cuba would be remarkable. I am hosting a Mexican girl I am going to send to college - perhaps she can id the station. If she gets the DX bug.

Didn't realize you were that far inland. Agree that Cuba daytime at that distance from the coast would be basically impossible.

And Radioman....In the Pensacola area, WSCR indeed gets pounded by Cuba. WSCR is usually invisible, but it does turn up from time to time. Almost always in the background. Rather than veer further off topic, I'll start a Pensacola bandscan thread with more.

Here in Phoenix, interference from KTAR-AM 620, but at night away from the splatter, I can get KFI.

When I lived on the Hawaiian island of Kauai thirty years ago, I used to DX KFI at night because I grew up in the Los Angeles area and liked to listen to that station. I probably had the only car on the whole island with a car radio button set to KFI!
