AM Frequency of the Week - 650 kHz

What do you all get on 650 AM? Here in Vermilion, OH I get nothing during the day but by sunset I get WSM/Nashville. Haven't heard anything else on this frequency yet.

650 kHz from Lexington, KY:

Daytime:

WSM Nashville, TN

Nighttime:

WSM Nashville, TN (Usually Dominant)
WNMT Nashwauk, MN (Often Heard with Daytime 10 KW Non-Directional Pattern Tearing Up WSM)
2 Spanish Stations (One is definitely Bogata, Colombia and the other I suspect is from Honduras)

WSM nights. Nothing daytime in Central VA. Something Spanish obliterated WSM during the last auroral event though, but I never heard any Id's. I assumed it may have been Cuba.

North of Chicago-- WSM at night. I hear the Nashwauk station fairly often and they sometimes totally obliterate WSM when they come on. I think they do some testing at night as well. Over in SW Michigan I can pick up WSM in the daytime although the signal is rather weak and a large loop is required.

Usually nothing here in northern VA during daytime, in the winter I have sometimes gotten a very weak WSM via skywave. At night, it's WSM and whatever this Spanish station is, from Colombia or Cuba. At first, I thought I may have heard the Spanish music station be from Bogota, now more recently I am thinking it is likely from Cuba as I still haven't yet have the opportunity to ID it.

In Memphis daytime it's splatter from local WCRV at 640. At night it's a little less splatter and WSM.

Far northwest suburban Chicago.....

Day: Blank...save for occasional splatter from local WSCR 670)

Night: WSM...with one of the better out of town signals around here. I've occasionally heard the Minnesota 650, but not often.

As to the possible Cuban on 650, the one I hear is Radio Progreso. Check 640, 690, 890 or 900 for parallel.

As to other 650's, from South Florida, it's only WSM or Progreso or maybe Bogota.

Where we stay on our visits to the other end of the state near Pensacola, WSM solidly rules 650 at night. Usually strong enough to completely blow out everything else...although I have heard Spanish briefly underneath a few times.

From Western Michigan:

Day: nothing

Night: WSM dominants but I've also pulled in WNMT & XETNT.

Sunrise: CKOM can often be heard over WSM as the sun comes up. Heard often at home and in the car. Surprised CKOM hasn't been mentioned yet.

Well, I'll mention CKOM now...

In Bothell days I get CISL Vancouver, BC. Nothing here in Bellevue.

At night I have gotten
CISL Vancouver, BC [Adult Standards]
CKOM Saskatoon, SK [News/Talk]
KSTE Rancho Cordova, CA [Talk]
KMTI Manti, UT [Country, heard twice. Been looking for the big W-S-M, but no such luck yet.]
KGAB Orchard Valley, WY [Heard once with news/talk. Never heard again.]

I predict that you'll eventually snag WSM Their tower was intentionally designed to maximize skywave performance, and the result is a really good nighttime signal. Especially considering the low dial position. From my experience in visits to the Seattle area, CISL would seem to be the major pest...but one that can be easily nulled.

I'm also curious if you've ever tried for the Honolulu 650. As KORL, it used to be fairly widely reported in California "back in the day"....although I never was able to hear it myself.

I was stationed near Anchorage AK for 2 years...KYAK, now KENI, never went off the air, except one Sunday night/Monday morning, and I heard a rock tune. Had to have been KORL, but wouldn't ya know it, KYAK returned, as if it were tech difficulties.

I was able to snag KIKI 830 & KAHU 940 outta HI, tho. :)

SW Ohio

650 KHZ

DAYTIME
WSM - Weak

NIGHT
WSM - Booming (also during Sunrise & Sunset)

After reading KR4BD's comments, I am going to pay closer attention to 650.

I listen to WSM most every evening. It is my favorite station. Still LIVE and LOCAL in the evening with Eddie Stubbs, the best country DJ around. Lots of variety in the music....old, new, gospel, bluegrass, plus the Grand Old Opry. It is radio worth listening to in my opinion. I really "know" this frequency and anything out of the norm gets my attention quickly!!!!

I heard KORL in Northern California right before sunrise once in the late 70s.
