AM Frequency of the Week - 650 kHz

Warminster PA(Philadelphia area):

Daytime: splatter from 640 WWJZ(Radio Disney) and 660 WFAN(NYC Sports)
Night: WSM loud and clear

From NE NC car radio. 650 WSM nights. Days is nothing heard except in winter, occasionally get WSM daytime skywave. It is over 400 miles.

Boise Night:

KMTI Manti
CKOM Saskatoon
KGAB Orchard Valley
CISL Vancouver
KSTE Rancho Cordova
Occasionally, WSM

WSM was a regular back when. Found a recording of the sign-on of WSM from the 1970's. Clear and all alone on 650.

One interesting night in the 80's nearly all the Hawaii stations were audible in Boise.
550, 650, ets... 650 KORL was very listenable. Never happened again.

I once heard WSM in Spokane, WA. Never got it in the Seattle area, though an old timer I know says he picked it up occasionally there back in the '50s and '60s.

CISL dominates 24/7 these days in Bellingham, WA (and most of Puget Sound except in Mount Vernon, WA where KAPS 660 dominates. But they can be nulled out fairly easy.)

Nothing during the day but WSM comes in loud and clear all night. In the early morning I can sometimes catch CKOM Saskatoon MN Canada, KGAB Orchard Valley WY, WNMT Nashwauk MN or XETNT Los Mochis in Sinaloa state MX.

WSM here in North Texas. I like to listen to WSM at nights when I go to sleep. Since I live in the country, it really gives it that cozy feeling hearing a light static, a little fading with the music when watching the stars at night.

Love that description...a little taste of what was common several decades ago.

Just south of Indianapolis, WSM is reading a solid S9 + 5db in the day on the Drake R8 with a 400' longwire. Almost zero background noise. It just gets stronger here at night.

Bob,

With that 400' foot wire, which Chicago stations do you get during the day? I assume you must get more than just the 50KW ones.

Thanks! (sorry for the slight topic veer)

You know, I may get my CCRadio-SW and a blanket and lay out underneath the stars with WSM playing. Haven't done that in a while.

Is WSM the only 50 kW clear that plays music and isn't a news, talk, or sports station?

There's AM 740 Toronto....

And don't look for that to change anytime soon. When the CBC vacated that monster signal for FM, the winner among numerous applicants to take over the 740 frequency agreed to a format geared to listeners 50 and older. The reason this application won was because the CRTC determined that this was the largest underserved segment of Greater Toronto Area (GTA) population.

The original all-music format has been tweaked (a mid-day talk show has been inserted, along with some weekend specialty stuff, such as a Scottish hour IIRC), but major changes are unlikely.

I kinda hope it hangs in there for a while. I enjoy Zoomer as a regular visitor here in VA with a wide variety of good music. Too bad no one here in the States can do the same thing.

740 booms down in the Charlotte area every night I listen. It is unmistakable as it is the only music on the dial... and clear as a bell usually.

I think I just caught a little bit of WNMT on 650 from here in Vermilion, OH. With the radio oriented WNW I could hear a station running a talk show of some kind with a female host taking calls. I heard "544-7070 is the number. Hi. You're on the air" This points to the Dr. Joy Brown show. Shortly after, WSM took over and I couldn't get enough of a null to listen to the other station.

Just noticed this question...1690 is always there during the day as is 560. 750 was once good...it's still there but very weak since their pattern change. 820 is Columbus,OH. 850 is Cleveland. Indy is on 950. 1030 is there but weak. The only listenable non-50KW is 560.

During the day on 650 in Austin it's a weak but listenable signal from KIKK Pasadena (SE of Houston). All things considered that's not bad for a 250-watt daytimer at around 160 miles.

At night it's a solid WSM with the occasional Latin American interloper underneath.

40 miles NW of Chicago: Crystal Lake, IL

Daytime: empty.
Sunrise-Sunset: WNMT Nashwauk, MN (sunset)
KGAB Orchard Valley, WY (sunrise)
Nighttime: WSM Nashville
