AM Frequency of the Week: 650

Carmichael, CA

Day & Night KSTE Sacramento, CA

Vallejo, CA

Daytime: KSTE Sacramento, CA
Nighttime: KSTE (Weak) Sacramento, CA

Usual Denver location - KGAB Orchard Valley (Cheyenne), WY daytime. Nights are a jumble.

This week’s location - London - 648 kHz, Radio Caroline, not that strong, but apparently more of a presence on DAB.

DFW, Texas

Daytime: Slop from local adjacent 660-KSKY.

Nights: WSM with a strong signal. Nulling can yield a weak KGAB Cheyenne, WY when conditions are right. At sunrise, I have heard XETNT Los Mochis, Sin. after WSM fades. One-time catches: WNMT Nashwauk, MN "Vikings football on AM 650 WNMT" fair with long fades with WSM nulled. The same night, heard CKOM Saskatoon, SK weak in the WMNT fades.

In Pickerington, Ohio, nothing by day and all WSM at night. Always one of the strongest skywave signals.
KIKK was about 10 miles from where I lived in the Houston area. Solid signal even with just 250 watts, and of course WSM was waiting to replace it when it left the air. Not quite as strong in Houston as here in Ohio, but it was an easy listen.

North GA. WSB weak daytime strong at night. As you travel close to Atlanta 640 WBIN splatters making 650 difficult south of Canton GA. Back in the 1970's before 640 went on the air, you could get WSM in East Cobb at night.

Tyler, TX:

Daytime a very, very faint signal from betting specialist KIKK in Pasa-get-down-dena Texas. That's down near Houston, for those not familiar with SE Texas. Historically, this was the Leroy Gloger country & western swing station that tried to burn the midnight oil on more than one occasion, sending The Opry folks all into a justifiable tizzy.

At night, all WSM. Pretty solid signal still, but not the blowtorch here it once was.

Clifton, New Jersey

During the day, I get mostly splatter from 660 WFAN New York, NY. At night, it's WSM Nashville, TN with some splatter from WFAN.

I know about that site

Bandscans are rear in the U.K, It's not like in the U.S

Problem is, I can’t get some of the stations that are said to be covering London; for example, Capital Xtra on 96.9 or London Greek Radio on 103.3…and no AMs at all. I was picking up Radio Caroline on 648 better in Leiden, the Netherlands, than in London. This is probably due to the construction of the hotel I’m in, but London-area FM stations also seem to have kind of wimpy signals.

Here in Wood Dale, IL in the near NW suburb of Chicago:

Daytime: nothing but 640 splatter
Nighttime: solid WSM

DX/RETRO: only 3 other stations besides WSM heard on 650 kHz: WKKQ (now WNMT, Nashwauk, MN), CKOM (Saskatoon, SK), and HRVW, La Voz de Centro America, San Pedro Sula, Honduras. As far as I can remember, I have never noticed WSM off the air opening any opportunities for DX on the frequency.

Only 5 kHz above on the split frequency of 655 kHz Radio Nacional, San Salvador, El Salvador used to be a common log in the Chicago area back in the 1980's.

From west Houston Texas, daytime is local daytimer KIKK "The Bet" with mostly BetQL network shows. At night it's all WSM plus a spur or harmonic of some sort from local 1560 KGOW.
