AM Frequency of the Week: 690

Carmichael, CA

Daytime: Nothing
Nighttime: XEWW Rosarito, BN

Vallejo, CA

Daytime: Splatter from KNBR San Francisco, CA
Nighttime: XEWW Rosarito, BN/CBU Vancouver, BC

East Tennessee: Days-a weak WZAP, Bristol VA.
Critical hours: WOKV Jacksonville FL easily overtakes WZAP.
Also WJOX, Birmingham.
Nights: Often WEVD, Fisher WV which often runs day facilities at night. WQNO, New Orleans also comes in nightly.
Retro/other: West Central Ohio. The CBC French station was always dominant.

As soon as I can find a method of getting rid of daytime racket low on the dial, WPHE from outside Philly should come in; 1000 watt directional daytimer that sends a lot of volts and ohms this way. Years ago as WXUR, a 500-watt directional daytimer (with quite possibly the same pattern) they were actually a daytime regular back in Queens. It and Connecticut's fainter WADS Ansonia were a turn of the loop apart all day until CBF Montreal checked them both into the penalty box.

Out here with the Totals Heard list re-set to 000, it's been SSS all the way. Gr8Oldies' WELD must be pretty widely heard. And one SSS in March 1999 brought in that quartet package of WZAP, WJOX, WTIX and WAPE.
(I don't give a flying one what 690 Jacksonville ID's as, hi. They will always be The Big Ape to this pork chop.)

I have a 'CKGM' logged at night. Sports. Six Decembers ago. Does anyone know if these were the same facilities as those of CBF?

I hear you on WAPE. I'm thinking no on CKGM being the same facility as CBF but don't know for sure

West side of Houston TX

Daytime, splatter from local KSEV 700

Sunset, when KSEV goes to night power, it's usually XEN Mexico City, "El Fonografo" with ballads and romantic music, often mixing w/KGGF. XEMA La Mejor in Fresnillo and WQNO New Orleans are sometimes heard. I've also logged XERG in Monterrey, but don't recall hearing them for a long time.

Night, XEN mostly with KGGF and XEMA underneath depending on how I turn the radio

Sunrise, same as sunset in reverse until KSEV powers up.

Tyler, TX:

Nothing. A whole lot of nothing. This was home to our local Black-oriented KZEY, which was surrendered in 2011. Been dead since 2007.

Most nights, even though this was the home to KZEY, a fair to not-so-good signal from Mexico City's XEN makes its way up here.

Jim, XERG has been MIA for at least a year. I assume it's another one that's been shut off by the Federales.

In Pickerington, Ohio, I've heard a very weak WNZK from Dearborn Heights, Michigan under considerable WLW slop. This despite them tucking in their signal to the south, presumably to minimize interference with WLW.
Farther east, closer to Zanesville, I think I once caught WELD from Fisher, West Virginia. This was about 10 years ago. It could have been WNZK, but I was unable to snag an ID. The oldies format checked out however.

Boise Idaho
Day nothing.
SR SS KRCO Prineville OR Or CBU Vancouver BC. Have heard Gravelbourg SK in the past.
Nights all XEWW with CBU under it.

Denver, CO - Mostly nothing. The HD splatter from 670 KLTT even affects this channel, even on high-quality radios. Officially it's not considered interference but that's what it really is. Around sunset, there's some talk programming until sunset farther west but I haven't been able to identify it. I can only hear it with a bandwidth filter of 2 kHz or less.

There's a 690 in Pueblo (KWRP), a class D with 250 watts daytime. It doesn't stand a chance against KLTT's HD splatter. Another Colorado station on 690, KRGS in Rifle, went silent early in 2023 due to transmitter failure. The FCC now shows the station as deleted. It was airing ESPN programming.

Retro/historical - This was a productive frequency in mid-Missouri in the 1980s: WVOK Birmingham, AL was heard at sign-off; KGGF Coffeyville, KS both day and night; WTIX New Orleans; CBF Montreal; and a Cuban station were catches.

DFW Texas:

Daytime: Weak KGGF Coffeyville, KS with news/talk.
Nights: KGGF on top with XEN Mexico, DF, taking over, depending on conditions. I've also heard XEMA "La Mejor" Fresnillo, ZAC mixing in. WQNO New Orleans used to sneak in, but haven't heard or tried them in a while.

Here in Wood Dale, IL in the near NW suburb of Chicago:

Daytime: usually empty, but have heard KSTL (St. Louis, MO) and WVCY (Oshkosh, WI) in the past
Nighttime: WQNO (New Orleans, LA), CKGM (Montreal, PQ) with TSN sports, and XEN (Mexico City) are common catches

DX/RETRO: CBF Montreal used to rule the frequency at night. Another frequent visitor used to be the Mighty 690 XETRA (Tijuana, Mexico). Others heard on this frequency include KGGF (Coffeyville, KS), KRMX (Pueblo, Colorado), WJOX (Birmingham, AL), WZAP (Bristol, VA), WOKV (Jacksonville, FL), KFXN (Minneapolis, MN) as well as HJCZ (Bogota, Colombia) and couple Cubans (Radio Progreso and Radio Liberacion). Most recent new catch on 690 is WELD (Fisher, WV) heard in 2021.

From NW San Antonio:

Day: Still in the heavy splatter zone of local KKYX.

Night: Aiming N-NW/S-SE, the KKYX splatter is reduced. XEN "El Fonógrafo" in Mexico City is most dominant. XEMA "La Mejor" in Fresnillo mixes with it and sometimes takes over until it drops power at midnight. Sometimes KGGF in Coffeyville, KS, can be heard under XEN, and on rare occasions it will come up on top for a bit.

Sunrise: XEN is stronger. XERG "La Deportiva" emerges when it goes to day power, mixing in and sometimes dominating. Also, XEMA can be heard underneath or mixing in at day power.

DX/Retro: A few times at night and sunrise I've heard WQNO in New Orleans briefly when aiming the radio E/W (where the KKYX splatter is heaviest). I've logged news/talk KTSM in El Paso just once - prior to sunrise last Sunday morning (6:02 CT). It was in/out for about 25 minutes with a listenable signal at times.

CKGM's tramsmitter is in Mercier, a different site than CBF (which I've heard from two sites, the old Contrecoeur stick and the later one at Brossard, which diplexed with CBM).

From the southwest suburbs of Chicago:

Logs on 690 total 10 facilities from first to most recent:

CBF Montreal (Contrecoeur site); CBF (later Brossard site, diplexed with CBM 940); WAJO Oshkosh, Wis. (250 w daytimer), WTIX / WONO New Orleans; WAPE Jacksonville (10 kW night power); CMBC Havana (50 kW); CKGM Montreal (Mercier); and three relatively recent ones:

WNZK Dearborn Heights, Mich. (1/4/2019, 2.5 kW at 7 a.m.); KSTL St. Louis (11/21/2021 apparently with 17.9 w); and XEN Mexico City (1/1/2023 with 100 kW).

Clifton, New Jersey

Days: I used to get WADS "Radio Amor" Ansonia, CT until a few years ago. It broadcasts a Spanish-language Christian format. Today, I get nothing during the day.

Nights: It's usually CKGM Montreal, QC. I have received WOKV Jacksonville, FL and Radio Progreso from Cuba in the past.

If memory serves -- I didn't keep records -- KHEY was the sole QSL I sent away for (and got!) during my time up in Springfield Mass in 1973. The reception was off some long-forgotten brand of console AM/SW that came along with the furnished apartment in one of several French neighbourhood pockets in the city. Rather serendipitously, the French CBF had signed off for the overnight. A few here might recall that DX test.

(O/T but lol -- and along with that first-and-only was reception of the solitary 'split' I was to hear there during my stay. Off that same floor rig came one Radio Paradise from the Antilles, on 1265 kHz. That quirk was notable inasmuch as out the apartment window at night I could see the two towers of WSPR across the Connecticut River blinking. As in '1270' WSPR. Am pretty sure they were not on the air that overnight.)

Interesting enough, KLTT 670 has had its HD turned off for at least the past couple of days, so the HD interference is gone from 690, at least temporarily. I got out one of my GE Superadios yesterday and picked up an NFL playoff game on 690. I believe that was Pueblo's KWRP. It was steady but weak. There's an outside chance it could have been KOLT from Scottsbluff, Nebraska, but KOLT's website says it was broadcasting Fox Sports at that time. I couldn't find a reliable website for KWRP.

Reception of the 650 from near Cheyenne, Wyoming is much better right now as well. We've also had around four inches of snow and below-zero temperatures at night, which is no doubt helping out the daytime mediumwaves, too.

XEN came in strong tonight.
KGGF Coffeyville rarely comes here, but on occasion.

Sure enough, an hour after I wrote that, I found that the HD was back on. Back to the splatter reaching all the way to 690. No more Pueblo or whatever it was.
