AM Frequency of the Week: 730

Update: Tried 730 at a little after 4am (CDT) yesterday morning, 4/14. About two hours before sunrise. Once I got past the WGN splatter, it was all CKDM. Country music and positive ID. Yep, 730 in the Chicago area at night is definitely a box of chocolates.

It certainly is. Gave it another try for the last half-hour before turning in, and I get a mishmash of signals with a Sangean CC Crane portable, led by XEX. If CKDM is among them, it’s not letting me know. Tried to match what’s barely distinguishable under XEX to the CKDM stream with no luck.
Turn the radio 90 degrees, and XEX is decent again tonight with a cross between techno and heavy metal.

From NW San Antonio:

Day: Normally just splatter from local 720 KSAH.

Sunset: XEX starts to come up in the partial null of the splatter.

Night: The splatter is almost totally gone when KSAH drops to night power. XEX is strong and fairly steady. I can null it out pretty well by aiming E/W and often hear XEHB "La Mexicana" in Hidalgo de Parral.

After midnight I've sometimes heard very weak snatches of KQPN in West Memphis, AR, in that null and no trace of XEHB. It's possible that XEHB signs off at midnight, but I've never listened to 730 at precisely that time.

Sunrise: XEHB returns and is much stronger when it goes to day power. XEX is weaker, and I can hear a weak KKDA with Korean-language programming underneath when the latter goes to day pattern. Eventually the KSAH splatter returns, and XEHB is last to fade.

DX/Retro: I heard XESOS "La Ranchera" in Agua Prieta a few times before it was retired. Also, on Jan. 27, 2019, I heard XEX via daytime skywave around 11 a.m. That's my lowest frequency for daytime skywave reception by far.

Day: WACE Chicopee, MA. Crystal clear.

Night: CKAC Montreal, QC. Cannot get WACE at all because WACE goes to 8 watts at night and CKAC is 50kw

I used to hear CJNR Blind River, ON sign on back in the early 1970s in Genesee County, MI. Had to qualify that as Genesee County, NY is near fybush, and maybe he heard it there too. The first song they played was "As Years Go By" by Mashmakhan, which was almost like the Canadian National Anthem on that station. CJNR later moved to FM. It remains in the database as a vacant allotment.

I'm one county northeast of Genesee, in Monroe County (NY, not Monroe County, MI, of course), and don't ever recall having heard CJNR when it was on. 730 here has mostly been CKAC through the years at night. Daytime it's usually not much; I'm just a smidge too far away from WDOS in Oneonta and too close to CBL/CFZM in Toronto on 740.

In west Houston, during the day it's KTRH slop. At sunset XEX comes up to overcome the slop, and I've heard KKDA in Korean from the DFW area. At night, XEX is one of the strongest Mexican signals here.

In Tulsa in the early 70's KRMG slop was the problem, but XEX was strong enough to be heard at night. I also heard KKDA once, but it was a soul music daytimer back then. Getting further away from KRMG's transmitter, XEX was a powerhouse in those days.

why did i read that as KDKA lol

I used to hear XEX regularly when I lived in the suburbs southeast of Houston. It overcame the slop even though I was right on a line between Mexico City and the towers of KTRH, which sent a lot of its impressive signal in my direction. I've never heard XEX or any other Mexican station I used to catch down there up here in Ohio.

East-central Iowa: Daytime nothing. Sometimes KWOA Worthington, MN (most likely daytime skywave). Nighttime, usually CKDM Dauphin, MB with a weak-to-moderate signal. I hear KKDA and XEX on occasion, too. I don't think I've ever heard CKAC from my home.

Here in west central Georgia, XEX is easy to catch most nights and dominates the frequency. It's odd to hear the station identify itself as " W Deportes" (Sports) and then play nothing but adult alternative or dance music all night. But it is nice to have an alternative music station on AM instead of all the talk radio or religious radio we normally hear.

CJOB (680) in Winnipeg comes to mind as a station that used to be news-talk during the day. Heavy dose of sports in the evening, then music overnight. CFRA in Ottawa (580) used to have a somewhat similar format. Both, of course, are now news-talk fulltime.

Today (April 26, 2021) WJYM, Bowling Green OH is off the air. On the Central Indiana SDR, a weak WFMW, Madisonville KY has taken its place.

I was told that WJYM was off the air because they had to put up one new tower that could support their new translator antenna. It should be back on in a couple of weeks. I've heard of many situations where compromises were necessary to build a translator. One translator is on a tower that can only support the weight of one bay, and had to go directional to protect a nearby third adjacent station at ground level with just one bay because of the vertical pattern. They can't exceed a field at any point on ground level that is greater than 20 dB stronger than the third adjacent. Without multiple bays and or unique bay spacing, this is often difficult. It looks like they have specified a 6 bay antenna on 106.9. It's most likely to protect the 60 dBu contour of the nearby WTOD 106.5 station. 6 bays is a lot of weight on an old AM tower.

Thanks much for the info! Looks like 730 will be clear in a large part of Ohio and Indiana for awhile.

WGN sounds great on the Elida, Ohio SDR without the WJYM slop. Well, as solid as it can sound from 200 miles away, but pretty good for that distance.
Nothing else coming through on 730 at that location, about 70 miles south-southwest of the WJYM towers.

KSVN, Ogden, Utah. Regional Mexican format. Plenty of music...not really sure how many commercials they run, not many.
