AM Frequency of the week--740

How many here live in/near Boston and can regularly hear WJIB at night, clearly? Curious.

I don't live in Boston, but can speak from visits there. Last May, I was in at a hotel near downtown. WJIB had a so-so signal....CFZM in the background. Trip before that I was staying in the suburbs (Tewksbury to be exact). WJIB was totally invisible, CFZM blasting in.

I don't live in Boston either, but last August, I stayed at a hotel a few blocks from Fenway Park and WJIB was "listenable" at night at that location. I don't recall hearing Toronto under the signal where I was located.

In Northbridge MA (12 mi S of Worcester or about 35 air miles to Boston) it's a listenable WJIB at nite it's 740 Toronto w nothing underneath.

In Phoenix, AZ, it's KIDR broadcasting a Spanish language news/talk format (1,000 watts day, 292 watts at night). At night is when this frequency becomes fun. In most parts of Phoenix, especially the eastern half of town, KIDR is constantly fighting it out with KCBS from San Francisco. A lot of times, if you null out KIDR, you can pick-up KCBS with a pretty decent signal. Personally, I would love it if KIDR didn't broadcast at night so KCBS could come in loud and clear.

I'm curious as well as to how far east the signal of KCBS goes. I know it's not one of the traditional clear channel frequencies, but its 50,000 watt, directional signal has to make it out pretty far east. I know I've heard it coming in with a strong signal in northern New Mexico along with KNX from L.A. But, beyond that, I'm not too sure. Has anyone in the Chicago area or the Midwest been able to pick-up KCBS? ???

I've never heard KCBS in the Chicago area. Toronto's 740 has always dominated that frequency.
Besides KCBS has a null to the northeast.

There may be some high angle radiation to the east from KCBS close in from the broadside component of the four tower array.

As far as WJIB, if it's running 5 watts, you would have to be pretty close to not get CFZM interference. The NIF must be quite high being that close to CFZM.

That's a good question. I'm in Texas, many miles to the east, and I've only heard KCBS once or twice in my life. I'm guessing that you'd stand a better chance of hearing KRMG than KCBS around Hobbs. There's a non-directional station about 60 miles from there on 740, KATK Carlsbad (running 500 watts at night), which might be a factor as well. Also, Houston's KTRH puts a fair signal into far west Texas at times and according to some DX reports, southeastern New Mexico, too.

What part of Texas have you heard KCBS?

I figure the more south you are as you go east, the better the chances of hearing KCBS.

It was in the Dallas area and with a much better radio than I have now, a Panasonic RF-2600. I also got very lucky, since like I mentioned earlier the 740 mix is usually KTRH, KRMG and KCMC and it's been that way for years. Also one night when the frequency was somewhat clearer I snagged Orlando.

If you got KCBS that far north, it gives me more hope that their signal may go even further more south and some of it could possibly reach central Florida.

Interesting.

The problem is getting any ID with WYGM and KTRH being as loud as they are. There is some kind of talk or news station in the background sometimes but never strong enough to ID.

Could be KRMG but they don't seem to send much signal our way.

Back around 1978 I heard Carlsbad's AM 740 in Roswell, NM with almost a clear signal during the summer afternoon; the calls were KBAD at that time. I didn't try to hear KCBS at night at that time, however, I think it is likely to hear KATK at night along with KRMG (?) and maybe KCBS underneath. It depends where in southeastern NM these stations are heard at night and whatever the antenna is a loop or wire. That's my guess.

Changing the subject to a different San Francisco station KGO used to make it down to Southern Mexico until 810 got very crowded in Mexico. So I can say definitely that on its own KGO was capable of getting that far south.
With todays interference, who knows?

gar

Both WYGM & KRTH is owned by Clear Channel & KCBS is owned by CBS..well I think you knew that already

KCBS had Traffic & Weather on the 8's 80, 18, 28, 38 so farth..listen to that

I should know....I listen to them often

When they do traffic on the 8s, do they give any kind of sounder that would be something I could identify?

I just started listening to their online stream and immediately noticed they have a sounder ahead of their sports update which they then said is given at 15 and 45 minutes after the hour.

It's definitely a sound that would stick out and I'll listen for it the next time I listen for KCBS in the background of WYGM and KTRH.

Edided to add, I now notice they use that same very recognizable sounder often at other times, especially at the half hour where it seems more enhanced.
