AM Frequency of the week--740

Also something you mentioned a while back may have come into play in that the land wasn't as developed in the 60s as it is now with all the population expanding since then, that probably made the difference.

The only experience I had driving in that general direction was in 1979 when my parents took me looking at colleges and I remember losing WABC not too long after Harrisburg on 76.

But again, think of the population growth and land development that took place even by then.

Losing it around Harrisburg may have had something to do with the hilly terrain. I remember on my drives through PA back in those days I would lose stations on the Pennsylvania Turnpike--quite hilly almost mountainous. Then later on even farther from the station that I had been listening to I'd regain reception again. I didn't necessarily hear WABC straight through to Pittsburgh, but away from the hills I'd get it back.

I've noticed things like that north of L.A. or San Bernardino with San Diego / Tijuana stations. When I'm several thousand feet up either on I-5 crossing the Grapevine (near Gorman / Frazier Park / Tejon Pass), or in the San Bernardino mountains near Crestline, I've often been able to get some San Diego & Tijuana AM stations in the middle of the day that I couldn't hear in L.A. or S.B. A couple examples are 10kW DA 1130 KSDO at Tejon Pass and 360-watt 1040 KURS near Crestline. Granted, the signals weren't exactly overload level, of course, but they were there.
Also I regularly get several San Diego / Tijuana FM stations up there in the mountains, which gets me wondering.... Is it possible that rather than picking up the groundwave on those AMs, maybe I'm picking up the low-angle skywave on its way UP to the ionosphere?

In western NY CFZM is virtually a local 24/7. No chance to hear anything else on the channel unless they shut down for transmitter maintenance...which they rarely do, since they have twin main transmitters at their site and can hot-switch from one to the other in a second if they need to.

It's Back!!! (the AMFOTW 740)

9:55 PM MST ESPN out of the mess in KCBS "null" in Boise ID.
Mixing in with a MOYL type staion, Mexican, & Dave Ramsey show.
KTRH came up in there also.
On an SRF-A100.

The MOYL-type could well be CFZM Toronto, "Zoomer Radio" a.k.a. "AM 740."

Dunno the Mexican....at night I have only caught Villahermosa, Tabasco from south FL.

CFZM all night here. One of the strongest AMs at night.

You're in Michigan, right?

CFZM has quite a reach. I've heard them near Des Moines before clearly night and I know they've even been heard in Washington state before

In my ongoing attempt to possibly hear KCBS from Tampa, CFZM made one of it's rare appearances here and dominated not only KTRH but also WYGM Orlando for a brief time last night.

From Western Michigan I can confirm that CFZM has a monster signal. It's one of the strongest on the dial here at night in the 300-400 mile range. Thankfully though I can phase it out so it nearly disappears. With it's phased into the dust, WVLN becomes normal during morning hours. It's often mixing with KVOX and KRMG. WRPQ is also often heard in the morning just after they sign on, same for WNOP. KBOE has also been coming in here in the early morning with c/w music. Texas also makes it in occasionally via KCMC and KTRH. When conditions are favoring the northwest, CBX Alberta's CBC Radio One music can be heard faintly during TOH's. But my two best catches on 740 to date are tiny KATK from Carlsbad, NM. (1kw / 250w) and a surprisingly clear KCBS as captured in this recording just before it gently fades away: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aMhS518j2qo

All of these were heard within the last couple of years.

Late to the thread... here in W. WA I only have heard KCBS and CBX on 740 -- sometimes competing with splatter from 750 KXTG when propagation is in that station's favor.

Usually it's KCBS and CBX mixing with each other -- nothing heard from the East or Mexico yet. I may have heard some UNIDs in the flutter but not enough IDing info put them in my log.

from Nashville it's CFZM...or KRMG:
a 90 degree twist of the radio nulls one of the other (Tecsun PL-606)

Keep after it, gar. As posted in my other thread, I spent a lot of mostly frustrating time on 740 when I was down there last month. The fact that you were able to snag CFZM means you're farther along than I was! KCBS would be really impressive to say the least! Off the top of my head, I don't think I've ever heard them east of the Rockies. You might want to also try for KRMG. They throw quite a bit of nighttime signal to the east in a lobe that also goes a little to the south. I think I may have heard them mixing with KTRH and WYGM while I was on Treasure Island, but couldn't positively ID.

And if you're looking for a really good catch on 740, try aiming toward KCMC Texarkana. If you hear ESPN it's likely that's what you've got.

I've been able to ID KRMG once when I was hoping it was KCBS.

CFZM is absent most all the time which doesn't make sense being they are non directional but they do drift in sometimes.

Here's my catch of CFZM from three years ago. It sneaks in on WYGM.

Good Luck Gar trying to get KCBS there

When I was in West Sacramento last month, I forgot to DX 740 at Night..to try out to null KCBS

How does KCBS come in in Sacramento? Guessing just fine daytime ... trouble with the null at night though?

From my (admittedly limited experience) as a traveler in Sacramento. KCBS has a good day signal there. Not quite as good at night, but still very listenable....at least at my hotel. This was about six years ago.

A couple of years ago, during a stay in Napa Valley (Yountville), KCBS had a noticeably weak nighttime signal. This seems, however, to have been some sort of temporary issue. The night signal was fine on my visit to Napa last year...as it had been on previous visits.
