AM Frequency of the week--740

A couple of years ago, during a stay in Napa Valley (Yountville), KCBS had a noticeably weak nighttime signal. This seems, however, to have been some sort of temporary issue. The night signal was fine on my visit to Napa last year...as it had been on previous visits.

I'm now in So-Cal. Thousand Oaks tonight (about 40 miles northwest of downtown L.A)

Now some preliminary nighttime observations from 400 miles down the coast...

740: KCBS has a better signal here than in Napa!
810: KGO is another SF monster

This may have been the trip where I recall KCBS as having issues. But even if it wasn't the one I was thinking of, KCBS has a monster nighttime signal into So-Cal. So a better night signal in Thousand Oaks than Youtville wouldn't surprise me.

ESPN tonight is KVOX Fargo.
Toronto is very weak but a regular here.
SS might be KIDR Phoenix. Pattern put a good 200mV/1km towards Boise at night.

740 AM out of Canada . Gangbuster signal every night in southern PA and northern Maryland.

KVOX has been heard a couple of times here in WA. It's my only North Dakota on AM. Someday I might be able to get WZFG at sunrise, you never know. Besides San Fran and Edmonton, I also have CFZM in the log.

I went back and reviewed my travels. I was in Napa last February. Then back in September. So that explains (to me) why I remember KCBS having signal issues on one visit....then resolved next time.

Yes, I may be losing my marbles....but hopefully not in my memory of this!

Is having HD on effect reception on AM at night?

It appears to be what I have read on R-I, the HD has weakened the analog signals.

I was wondering if one of you who can hear a good signal from KCBS where you are day or night can possibly find out how much of a delay their online stream has from what you hear on the air and if the online stream is behind or ahead of what's on the air.

In my ongoing attempt to maybe hear something of KCBS here in Tampa, I have the online stream on in the background in the other room while I'm trying to match up any voice to what I hear on 740 when the voices of WYGM or KTRH are in a lull or the signals are in a fade.

740 sounds like a graveyard frequency when neither WYGM or KTRH are dominating.

I can't be sure but one time when the online stream of KCBS had the traffic report going, I thought I matched up the woman's voice to what I heard in the mess on 740 but not exact words. It sounded like the same voice. I don't think the traffic sounder itself is enough to break through the noise.

I did get an ID from KRMG tonight too.

If I ever do get any official ID from KCBS, I don't think it will be as strong as the times I've heard KFI where you can easily hear it's them.

My "mission" on 740 continues as my travels continue....

Friday night (2/15) I was in Birmingham, AL. Hoping for CFZM....getting KRMG. No trace of Toronto....although CJBC from the same stick was steady, albeit weak. I'm now at our familiar spot, Perdido Key, on the gulf southwest of Pensacola. I haven't done any nighttime listening here yet, but at 1pm CST this afternoon, I was getting WMSP from Montgomery. Very weak and it sounded like something even weaker was underneath (KTRH?). IIRC, as WBAM, the Montgomery 740 was a 50kw ND daytimer. Now its 10kw directional days/660 watts nights aimed south...right at me.

Well....THAT didn't take long!

My "mission" has finally met with success. Within an hour of my last post, I snagged CFZM here where I am on the gulf coast. Right at sunset. 10-minute drive to pick up carry out from one of the many excellent local seafood houses around here. Dialed up 740 in the car, and there it was. On top of the channel fighting with sports talk (likely WMSP). By the time I reached my desination it had disappeared. Also M.I.A. during my return drive. But at least now I've snagged it on the gulf/in Florida (albeit within a couple of miles of Alabama).

I wouldn't have expected that this would be all that difficult to accomplish!

I've heard 810/WHB a number of times at sunset on my trips to Houston. They seem to have a very good 50KW signal.

If you're referring to my home location northwest of Chicago, I don't believe I've ever heard WHB there...at least not since the 710/810 flip. WGY has a fairly good night signal.  Daytime produces a faint signal from Dodgeville, WI, along with minor splatter from semi-local WCPT onn 820. 

If you're referring to our usual "beach spot" at Perdido Key, where I am for a week and a half, I've never really paid much attention.  Usually, no signal on 810 is strong enough to jump out.  Funny, though....just this morning a little after sunrise, there was a fairly strong signal coming through on 810.  I didn't hang around long enough to ID it.  My first reaction was that WHB would've still been on night pattern, which is pretty tight to protect KGO and WGY.  But maybe they're allowed to go to day pattern "early" at Schenectady local sunrise.

Whatever. I'll put 810 on my "to do" list for my current stay here.  I was planning to start another thread to deal with my exploits here, so look for whatever turns up in that space.

740 and the 1460 station both heard on occasion in NE Ohio in the 60's.

That would've been KYSN. I was in Colorado Springs for a time in the summer of 1964....flipping between KYSN and KOMA and hearing the exact same PAMS jingles.
