AM Frequency of the week: 740

I guess I missed this thread when it was first posted.

So I can null KCIK from Kihei on Maui at night pretty much but I've never heard KCBS for some reason.

There is a station in the background that's gotten strong enough a couple of times to hear the words but I know it's not KCBS and I've never heard any ID.

And I have no idea what it could possibly be. It's a talk station.
It could possibly have been KTRH. I remember a map showing a pretty good signal going towards the SW and through the southern part of Baja California. Perhaps that continues well out into the Pacific.

Most likely it was KBRT from Costa Mesa, California, a 50,000 watt station during the day that was formerly located on Avalon, Catalina Island. They now also do broadcast at night since their move to their new transmitter site, not at 50,000 watts, but they do throw most of their signal out to the southwest toward the Pacific Ocean from the Santa Ana Mountains. I miss the days when KBRT would just sign off at night because KCBS would come booming in up and down the West Coast with no interference. Now, KBRT is a pest for those in LA, Orange County and San Diego County trying to hear KCBS.

Daytime just off the western edge of Phoenix I get KIDR.

This morning just about or before 5AM MST, though, I actually got KCBS to come in pretty well. It was running roughly 50-50 in terms of volume with KIDR. It's very challenging, for me anyway, to try to make much sense of a program in English on one topic at the same time as another program in Spanish on a different topic!

AM 740 of Toronto, a.k.a. "Zoomer Radio"
Yes the Toronto oldies station booms into New England nights. I haven't really rated signals coming in from Canada at night but if I did 740 would likely rank 2 or 3rd. There used to be much stronger stations coming out of the "great white north" but some of the commercial outfits folded and a couple carrying CBC broadcasts now only do FM. Including one loud fav' coming out of Muncton,NB which was the only station I ever heard on "Atlantic Time" (one hour earlier) .
