AM Frequency of the Week: 800

Not much in the daytime, and a mix of several stations at night. The most common is CKOR Penticton, BC with EZ Rock...I don't believe they've ever gone down to 500W (daytime is 10KW). Also heard from Canada is CHAB Moose Jaw, BC with classic hits, also 10KW. KPDQ OR comes in weakly on their 500W during the night, and XEROK Ciudad Juarez is common as well with their Mexican music. Also heard is KBRV Soda Springs, ID with classic country, sometimes I don't think they go down in power.
During aurora - tentatives on KBFP and XESPN. Both matched the formats but I never got ID or local commercials. Both wanted still.

I would know 1967 on as far as CKLW's signal. CKLW would switch pattern at sunset and you could still hear it, but much weaker. Get much past sunset and PJB would overpower it. You'd hear a strong PJB with a weak CKLW underneath it. At Boy Scout camp in Defiance, Ohio it was much better. When we went on vacation in Michigan (north of Grand Rapids), the night signal was strong. Now, CKLW's night pattern goes straight east instead of sagging southeast, and 800 sounds like a graveyarder. When The Big 8 Reunion was happening in 2002 I thought I'd see if I could hear any of it. All I could make out was the song "Scorpio" by Dennis Coffey way under the mud (Dayton area). When I went North a few years ago, I checked in Bucyrus, Ohio and I barely had them. Likely during the music era they would have been strong there. They were very strong in the Cedar Point parking lot though.
 
Here in Port Alexander, AK 800 is a mix of CKOR Pendicton "EZ-rock" and KINY from Juneau. Sometimes you'll just hear one or the other, (somewhat clearly too!), other times they fight it out, so you can literally hear both at the same time, at about the same signal strength. This is at night of course: daytime is nada unless you have an exceptionally good antenna setup (I do), then you can hear KINY during the day.
