AM Frequency of the week: 810

Not all that much to report from my location northwest of Chicago....

Days: Usually it's just moderate splatter from WCPT (820-Chicago). Sometimes in winter WZRK (EX-WDMP) from Dodgeville, WI makes it through.

Nights: WGY, Schenectady, NY. Typically only a fair signal, but reliable and alone on the channel.

Sunrise-Sunset Sometimes WHB (ex-KCMO) from Kansas City or WSJC from Magee, MS.

Other location: During my days on the Florida peninsula before we moved on to Pensacola, I was hearing the Bahamas 810, but with badly distorted audio. I don't know what the deal was, but it sounded awful. On the Bahamas' other big signal...1540....the audio sounded just tine,

In the near north Chicago suburbs it’s nothing but WCPT splatter during the day. At night it’s always WGY, but not as strong as they used to be. At sunset, especially in the fall I hear Kansas City before they power down.

Other: when I was in the Southern California desert, KGO dominated at night with a strong signal. KGO is quite strong at night up and down the west coast. I tried to hear them on the Arctic receiver when conditions peaked a few months ago, but never succeeded in hearing them.

In west Houston, days are mostly XERI "Radio Rey" down in Reynosa, with KYTY San Antonio well underneath. At sunset, it's WHB sports in Kansas City and sometimes religious WSJC in Mississippi. At night, WHB dominates, with a "mush" underneath. I've not ID'ed WGY or KGO from here.

Retro, from Tulsa in the early 70's, KCMO (now WHB) was strong in the daytime. At night, KCMO, but did ID WGY and WSJC.

Daytime here, 8 miles north of Pottsville PA: Zippo, Ronson and Bic. If the FCC were still licensing stations on AM I could probably put a 5000 watt omni on in the daytime and not bother anyone.

Sunset here, 8 miles southwest of Hazleton :) : WEDO Coudersport PA, near Pittsburgh. I have them taped. And
WYRE Annapolis. I don't know their current calls.

Nights: Perhaps the worst 50,000 watt omni signal licensed -- WGY Schenectady NY

WGY, WEDO (6-24-94t), WYRE (3-13-95),

East Tennessee: Nada days
WGY most nights, but I've had occasional reception of the Bahamas.

Retro/other: Dayton, Ohio: WSYW (former Beautiful Music AM WATI) weakly daytime, otherwise WGY by night

I remember the thrill of driving down I-95 in broad daylight headed to Miami with ZNS-3 on the radio. Not DX but, being from Ohio, it was cool.

Daytime - nothing

Nighttime - KGO Usually not as strong as KNBR or KSFO but listenable most of the time.

Once on the Oahu sdr receiver, there was some station I never heard on that frequency before here that was overpowering KGO.

They were playing some kind of foreign music and it wasn't Spanish. Never found out what I was hearing.

I'm still surprised I can hear KGO at all considering their directional pattern.

How far east of San Francisco have they been heard?

From Woodinville WA, NNE of Seattle.

Days: KTBI Ephrata WA, weakly. Lots of splash from local 820. Winters will hear KGO mixed in, many times on top. KTBI is one of those weird 50kW daytime only (23kW critical hours.) Signed on in the early 80s and then immediately started a complaint campaign to the feds in order to (I guess?) rescind KGO's long standing as a clear channel. Which didn't work then, would now perhaps? Of course now he has a 24 hour FM xlator, so maybe the 50K daytimer means a whole lot less to him now.

Nights: A little splash from local 820 KGNW, otherwise KGO like it's a local.

Yakima WA

DAY - KTBI Ephrata WA (Religion), KGO also makes it in winter.
NIGHT - KGO San Francisco (News/Talk) about S9+30dB most nights.
Often at sunrise, KBHB Sturgis SD (Farm/News) shows up under KGO. Also have heard WHB Kansas City MO (Sports) and WGY Schenectady NY (News/Talk) in the past. WGY my only NY station.
WANTED - KLVZ Brighton CO ('Legends' 810 Adult Standards), KSWV Santa Fe NM (Spanish Variety), CKJS Winnipeg MB (Multicultural). None of these three have been confirmed here.

Orange County, TX Days-nothing, nulling WHB with Spanish underneath, it's a moderate WCKA Jacksonville, AL (at their local sunrise) with a very weak WSJC. At 0600 a strong Spanish station covering everything.

Here in Wood Dale, IL in the near NW suburb of Chicago:

Daytime: these days usualy just some splash from WCPT. WJPW (Rockford, MI) heard in the past
Nightime: usually WGY, but WHB and WMGC make frequent appearances

DX/RETRO: some other stations logged on this frequency include WJJQ (Tomahawk, WI), WSJC (Magee, MS), WDDD (Johnsons City, IL), WDMP (Dodgeville, WI), WCTA (Alamo, TN). The foreign logs on this frequency are ZNS3 (Freeport, Bahamas), Radio Sutatenza (Bogota, Colombia) and XEFW (Tampico, Mexico)

I remember Radio Sutatenza from the tropical bands, (5095 if I remember right)

Yes, they were on 5075 kHz with 25 kW and also 5095 kHz with 50 kW. Both heard in 1980's. Apparently they also had a 10 kW transmitter on 6075 kHz, but I never heard that one.

From far south suburban Kansas City:

Day: Nothing but non-directional 50 kW WHB. I am 31 miles from their transmitter.

Critical Hours: This is where it gets interesting. Late afternoon: WHB, of course but I have ID'd WGY underneath WHB when the latter is still 50 kW. This is a wintertime only occurrence. Pretty amazing this close to the WHB stick.

Night: WHB with occasional identifiable WGY underneath. The WHB signal at night is not strong at 5 kW. Splatter from 50 kW WBAP on 820 kHz is common. WBAP is one of the strongest skywave signals at my location.

Days:::KGO

Nights:::KGO.

I'd would be curious to know how far east KGO goes as well. Very good signal, but I don't listen to KGO as its to far left from my political views. I did listen to it in the past when its was a "news talk" station, and had weekday hosts that included Gene Burns, Gil Gross, Dr. Bill Wattenburg, and the funny Charles "Karel" Bouley, who I enjoyed listening to. At my job, I was forced to listen to Ronn Owens's, John Rothmann, and Ray Taliaferro. At least the latter was entertaining when things got heated with his callers. I loved it when ray would blow his stack " GO TO HELL SIR "!!!!!!!Loll....miss those days..

Around Columbus, Ohio ...
- Daytime: Nothing but splatter from WVSG, the former WOSU now airing St. Gabriel Catholic Radio on 820.
- Night: Always WGY with a decent to strong signal, but one time several years ago (I want to say this was around 2006) it was quite a clash of signals between WGY and WHB. It is the only time I've ever heard Kansas City here.

From NW San Antonio:

Daytime: Local KYTY, which is actually in Somerset.

Sunset: I can get a partial null aiming NE/SW, in which XERI "Radio Rey" can be heard weakly.

Night: When KYTY goes to night pattern, the null gets a little deeper and XERI has a stronger and fairly steady signal. Occasionally I'll hear a very weak WHB, and I heard WSJC once when it must've been on day power. There's also a bit of splatter from 820 WBAP.

Sunrise: A weak WCKA can sometimes be heard for a few minutes after it changes to its 50 kW day pattern until XERI goes to day power. A bit later I can usually hear WSJC for a little while after it goes to day power.
