AM frequency of the week - 860

The other day I noticed that the local K-Mart was selling Sony SRF-59 radios for 13 bucks. Maybe I should check out the electric can openers first before I buy one! :)

The SRF-59 is amazing -- here is my write-up:

I have yet to try putting a larger ferrite bar in one, or putting a better tuning mechanism in a larger cabinet, but I bet performance will be amazing when I do.

Steve.

What will they think of next? A toilet that automatically lifts its lid, and talks?

Not quite but almost. I was on a British website a couple of weeks ago, and came across a picture of a toilet paper dispenser that also charges your ipod. (From the nation that gave us James Bond) :)

I wouldn't mind the automatic lid but I would really rather my toilet not talk, if that's all the same to anybody. :)

I'm thinking the next good radio invention should be an "alert" device for e-skip and tropo on FM. Big ol' loud robot voice yelling "Check your radio - there has been an e-skip alert issued for: (insert region)". It would save me and many DXers lots of missed openings!

NOW you're talkin'!

To get back to 860 AM. It was always one of my favourite frequencies for the rockies and B.C in General. All those 40 watt CBC repeaters that you could only hear for 20 minutes at best.

Hoping that I'm not overposting here. But in a few weeks, coming soon to a chimney near you, stations will be starting in with their Holiday formats anyway ..... :- )

Each Christmas Eve, around 9PM, me and the missus wrap gifts, to be distributed the next day, while listening to CJBC. We've been observing this odd orthodoxy for at least the past fifteen years. Between the two of us, despite both of us having grandparents of French distraction, we only understand about 1/20th of what's being said. Yet, the listening is so delghtfully .... old world?
And even since she and I are slightly different faiths, I see no harm in then driving around about 11:30 to find some house of worship with lights on. 'You'll go to ANY old church!' she grumbles.
Well, yeah. One year we wound up at a Mass where the congregation was singing 'Silent Night' in what sounded to me like Russian.

Then we get back home, and CJBC is into slightly different programming. Quite often it's more sombre. Sometimes it's off Radio France International.
One year they (and CBF 690) had on two gals doing a show from what sounded like a hotel lobby or ballroom -- with a live string quartet! Great stuff it was, made even better when it became apparent that the two gals were getting progressively more and more blasted on cognac as the night wore on, giggling and even belching.

The observance remains a ritual here. Some of you folks within range might find it ..... uh, different?

Interesting stuff, Steve. On our typical Christmas eve, Mrs. Cyberdad is usually pretty exhausted from all of the activities that go with the holidays' large family gatherings. So when we turn in for the night, she's usually asleep before her head hits the pillow. On the other hand, although I'm also pretty tired myself, but I still need to unwind for a little while before going to sleep. And what better way than DX with a radio on the night stand! Especially on a night where just about every station veers from its normal format. So, I'll try to make it a point to put CJBC on my bucket list for that night.
