AM Frequency of the Week: 880

DFW, Texas

Daytime / Sunrise / Sunset: Splatter sandwiched between locals 870-KFJZ and 890-KTXV.
Nights: KRVN Lexington, NE is usually dominant with KJOZ Conroe, TX in Spanish under, equal or on top, depending on conditions. I heard KJJR Whitefish, MT on its DX Test. For a fleeting moment, KLRG Sheridan, AR popped in weakly under the KJJR test with "Arkansas Rocks" - never heard them before or since. One overnight, I heard KHAC Tse Bonito, NM with Moody Praise network. Also heard once - WIJR Highland, IL "La Tremenda", probably on day power, clobbering KRVN. I've heard WCBS once or twice with a very weak signal when nulling KRVN.
 
Clifton, New Jersey

Days/Nights: I get my local all-news station WCBS New York, NY with a strong signal.

DX/Flashback: On November 17, 2019, WCBS was off the air. It had HD at the time, so I was able to DX 870 & 890 that morning. I briefly heard a faint signal of a Country station on 880, but WCBS signed back on before I could get the ID. It was either KRVN Lexington, NE or CKLQ Brandon, MB.
 
I've yet to hear the rock outfit from Sheridan, Arkansas here in ETX. Wildthang has, TXPH97 has, heck I bet even Jim in SA has. Yet not here.

Next door to the Punjabi station from Mabank at 890, which sends a big lobe my way. Nothing daytime on 880 in Tyler. Evening time brings up the aforementioned KJOZ Conroe with Regional Mexican and a fairly steady signal. Listenable, but definitely not local. Beneath it is usually KRVN up in Nebraska, and it does overtake KJOZ on occasion, but KJOZ is the typical station heard on 880.
 
South Florida (Boca Raton). Here for several days helping out my father. WCBS is in with a fair/good signal all night on my Sangean pocket radio. There is another English language signal present underneath, but not strong enough to ID.

As close as I am, not even the slightest hint of Cuba on the frequency from here.
 
In Charleston, SC it’s WCBS at night almost every night. Probably the best NY signal. Better than WFAN. We do get Cuba sometimes on the frequency. I’ve gotten them a few times in the winter on very cloudy days mid afternoon.

Miami’s station (WZAB) comes in daytime weakly.

Turns out the other unid is WXBN Miami, a semi-local signal 48 miles SSW of me. They run 5kw nights, however their night pattern totally misses me here. WCBS completely dominates from nearly 1,100 miles :)

Good note about WRFD's signal to the east. One late afternoon (just about sunset ; still very light out) I punched up the 880 car button for WCBS. The radio was still set to the old NYC stations. I was in Shamokin PA, and WRFD Columbus was atop. In fact, there was no WCBS at all.
I use the WPGM map here, because Shamokin has no AM station anymore and WPGM is the closest AM to there. I hope that this 'zoom out' map from Radio-Locator takes. Shamokin is smack in the middle of the page.

WCBS is the *usual* day and night visitor here, though, from 125 miles east.

Someone here will have the date and time of the KJJR TEST from Wyoming. That made it through via the GE SR 2. For some reason I don't have any details of the reception, which was in a room I had been moving all of the DX equipment at the time.
 
@Steve Green NEPA, no problem. Observations like this always particularly interest me.
It reminds me of the situation on 720 when WGCR from North Carolina routinely pummels WGN during critical hours well into the Midwest. Those signals almost have to encroach on the blowtorch pretty close to the home market in such a situation.
 
Central Kentucky:
Days: Last breath of WRFD Columbus
Nights: WCBS New York City with a decent signal.
Have heard WPEK late afternoons in the winter months.
Have never heard KRVN here...
 
Chicago by the lakeshore:

Daytime: generally nothing. I've heard WMEQ in Menomonie WI near sunrise, and I've heard WRFD in Worthington, OH on Lake Shore Drive itself in certain spots during the daytime. But it's generally absent otherwise.

Nighttime: As expected WCBS in New York is often there strongly, but it does dissipate at times. I've snagged CKLQ in Brandon, MB and KRVN on a few occasions but both are quite rare. And I did here the DX test of KJJR Whitefish, MT a while back.
 
@MichaelTheZ Are you the same poster who reported hearing WTVN in Chicago within the past few years? I seem to remember that also was heard along Lake Shore Drive from time to time, but I might be mixing that reception report with another station.

I checked to confirm... it was in one of my very first posts on this site, back in Jan 2019. I heard WTVN around an hour before sunset near the lake. I think I've heard it in similar situations since then too.

WTVN shouldn't be a problem for DX reception before sunset in Chicago, I wouldn't think
 
From the southwest suburbs of Chicago ...

Days: hash from nearby WLS 890.

Nights: WCBS is the station most likely, sometimes strong enough that with proper nulling from WLS, I need not detune the ICF-2010 or use a loop to separate it from the Big 89. Doing that brings WCBS forward, of course.

Early morn': KRVN Lexington, Neb., drops in upon switching to day pattern with all-farm news all the time (country music nights). I've heard KRVN at daybreak within a mile of the WLS transmitter.

And: A pair of other catches, WRFD Worthington, Ohio, at daybreak 2/13/2020, and KJJR Whitefish, Mont., during the DX test of 1/8/2022 with Morse code, sweep tones, and other fancy stuff. My second Montana station (and in three days, curiously).

I don't know what they're doing early in the morning, because I just don't get up that early, but in the evenings, KRVN is doing syndicated talk of the usual sort. Right now (~9:30 pm Mountain time) they're running Rich Valdes.

It's been a while since I was rolling west, so that's a switch within the last few years. Perhaps they still play music overnight?

KRVN doesn't post a schedule online, unfortunately, so I don't know.
 
15 miles south of Orlando

Days - Nothing

Nights - WCBS, the most consistent of the NY stations by far. Sometimes Cuba and WXBN will try to sneak underneath.

Retro circa 2015 WCBS came booming into Fajardo, Puerto Rico.
 
From NW San Antonio:

Day: There is some slop from 860 KONO. Lately it's more than usual ever since KONO cranked up its volume. On my most sensitive radios, a weak KJOZ in Conroe, TX, mixes in with the slop.

Sunset: KJOZ comes up with a listenable signal. A little later, I can hear a weak KRVN if I aim the radio N/S.

Night: KJOZ comes up strong - a lot stronger than I remember in the past (as also noted by @wildthangjim). Aiming north, I can null it somewhat and hear KRVN with a pretty good signal, but KJOZ still takes over sometimes. If I aim NW/SE, a weak XECHEP "Arre en Acústika" in Chihuahua can occasionally be heard underneath with regional Mexican music.

Sunrise: It's similar to nighttime with KRVN and KJOZ. XECHEP is often under it, but if propagation is right, it can take over for a bit. Later, by aiming NE, I usually hear a weak KLRG in Sheridan, AR, mixing in with classic rock when it goes to day power.

DX/Retro: My one-time catches include WIJR "La Tremenda" in Highland, IL, in 2019 (likely still on day power) and Radio Progreso in Cuba in 2014. Also, I've caught WCBS a handful of times in winter/spring. In addition, I've heard KHAC in Tse Bonito, NM, twice - once at sunset and once at sunrise.

Retired stations I heard a few times include XEMM "La M Mexicana" in Rio Verde and XEAAA "Radio Mujer" in Zapopan.
