AM Frequency of the week: 900

Far northwest Chicago burbs.....

Day: WLS (890) splatter

Night: Usually a multitue of weak signals with CHML on top.

Retro: XEW used to be relatively common. As might be expected from 250KW. But I haven't heard them in years. Didn't someone say something about reduced power? 30KW or perhaps even less? Aside from not having been able to hear the station, I haven't been able to find anything to confirm whether that's the case.

Near north Chicago suburbs:

Daytime: some WLS splatter. At night usually CHML on top. I also haven't heard XEW in a long time.

East Tennessee: Local WKXV, Knoxville TN 24 hours.

Retro/other: Most other places I've lived, CHML is pretty common at night. I remember XEW being a high powered blaster.

Here in Wood Dale, IL in the near NW suburb of Chicago:

Daytime: WLS splatter
Nightime: usually CHML

DX/RETRO: have not heard XEW in a while either. Used to be common catch. Other heard on 900 kHz include KFAL (Fulton, MO), WFRO (Freemont, OH), WNNO (Wisconsin Dells, WI), WFIA (Lpouisville, KY), CKTS (Sherbrooke, PQ). Another station that has been making frequent visits at night in recent years is WKDA from Lebanon, TN with Spanish religious programming. Most likely using their daytime power of 5 kW.

Dittos, Ryan. WURD by day, CHML by night.

* * * * * * *

Back near JFK Airport in Queens NY, we had a small Part-15 station on 900 during the evenings. WQAN were the calls. It was a goof. We were in our teens.
But as years went by, 'WQAN' became a geeky and semi-professional hobby. Into the Eighties, otherwise respectable DJs would do an hour on '900 QAN' just to screw around.
I took one of those WQAN sessions, timed it to 5:59 AM one April morn, and mixed it plus the real stuff that was actually coming in on 900.
The late Harry Mankin ('Hugh Heavy') did the wakeup show, recorded a few years before the mix. The music w'd given him was the most unconscionable morning fare for 'Mom' to put on the coffeepot.
James Gang. Mountain. Frantic. Black Sabbath. 1970's grunge.

In the unlikely instance where someone here would like to hear 900 kHz in 'Northeast PA' between 6:00 and 6:45, with WQAN fading up just in time for IDs among a half-dozen other stations, operators are standing by,

I also had thought of mentioning the late great WFRO. What a signal for 500 watts! All the way to Fort Wayne, to just north of Dayton, and all along U.S. 30 in Ohio. WFRO was taken off the air to move 910 from Flint into the Detroit market

CHML 900 Hamilton, Day and Night Along with WFRO 900 Fremont ground wave, and WATC...WSNQ 900 Gaylord prior to Sunset.

Not a frequency I watch very carefully, but:
Daytime, nothing, as it is right next to local WSUI on 910 and there is nothing on 900 strong enough to fight its way through.
Nighttime: less predictable. Most often, CHML. Sometimes XEX. I don't recall whether I heard it more often years ago. CKBI from Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, is sometimes there.

In west Houston, days is local KREH in Vietnamese. At night, XEW is dominant. In their null there is a rumble of other station(s), and have heard another Spanish station (maybe Cuba), but have never ID'ed anything. I should spend some more time on this frequency.

Retro, in Tulsa OK in the early 70's, days was KHOZ in Harrison Arkansas. Nights was all XEW. Back then, with XEW on full power, they were one of the stronger signals on the dial, at 1000 miles distant. It was at times a problem for me, causing splatter on my preferred WLS. IIRC, XEW was off on Monday mornings and I heard CHML then.

From NW San Antonio:

Daytime: A very weak KREH in Pecan Grove.

Sunset: KREH is stronger, and XEW starts to come up.

Night: XEW has a fairly strong signal. Underneath I'll occasionally hear XEOK in Monterrey. Aiming E/W, I can null out XEW pretty well and hear Radio Progreso. It usually has a weak signal but sometimes comes up stronger.

Also, I'll sometimes hear a Christian station underneath XEW that has both talk and Christian pop (MercyMe, TobyMac, etc.) I've tried to match it to the streams of other Christian stations on 900 but haven't found a match. Of course, it's never there at the top/bottom of the hour for an ID. Anyone have a clue as to what it could be?

Sunrise: Occasionally I'll hear a weak KPYN in Atlanta, TX, mixing in with XEW and XEOK. There's also a bit of splatter from 890 KVOZ.

DX/Retro: I've heard KCLW in Hamilton, TX, and KFLP in Floydada, TX, at sunrise once each back in 2016. Also, I'm no longer hearing XEDT in Cd. Cuauhtemóc, which I'm assuming has migrated to FM.

Could your 900 be WFIA Louisville, KY which is a simulcast of 88.5 WJIE? http://www.wjie.org/
They are a contemporary christian station have played Chris Tomlin and Mercy Me while im listening online

From Laramie, WY (SE Corner of the state)

Right after sunset, sometimes KJSK Columbus, NE
Before Laramie sunrise sometimes right before Laramie sunset.. KTIS Minneapolis
After dark at night, CKBI Prince Albert Saskatchewan and sometimes Radio Progresso from Cuba (50kw)

Days: A very weak KBIF out of Fresno, California can barely be heard on both my Sangean PR-D5 and PR-D4W.

Nights: KBIF again, dominates the frequency, with a much better signal
