AM Frequency of The Week: 930

What do you get on 930, one of the "Mess" frequencies?

Daytime here in Bothell, WA: Very weak KBAI Bellingham, WA or KYAK Yakima, WA.

Nighttime here in Bothell, WA: KYAK Yakima before sunset, after sunset it's a mess. CJCA Edmonton, AB is usually on top, but KSEI Pocatello, ID also comes in from time to time.

Where I am, a few blocks from Tampa Bay, near downtown St. Petersburg, 930 is not a mess.

WLSS (for years was WKXY) out of Sarasota (35 miles south) is a semi local with a listenable clear signal during the day. At night they have a deep null to the n.n.e. to protect the 930 in Jacksonville, but since I'm n.n.w., I not in the null or the deep part of it anyway and I receive them weaker but still listenable at night (WLSS), but at night the Jacksonville, FL station is in the background.

WLSS is a Salem talk station with SRN news at the top of the hour, just in case that helps anyone i.d. them.

When I'm at my other listening post about 73 miles n.n.e. of here 930 out of Jacksonville usually rules, with another station sometimes interferring, that I've not been able to i.d.

In the San Francisco Bay Area (Berkeley) I don't get much usually,

Daytime: Nothing but static

Nighttime: KHJ faintly

Years ago, I spent two months in San Diego, at Harbor Dr and Main St, near the Coronado Bridge and at that time 930 KHJ came in like a local day and night; don't know if it still would.

Southern New Jersey:

Day: Nothing or a trace of WPAT

Night: 95% of the time WBEN Buffalo NY

El Cajon, CA - KHJ Los Angeles day and night. Weak in the daytime - probably just at or slightly above the soft mute threshold on my PL-380 which around that frequency range is about 30-32dBu (not to be confused with field strength measurements using a similar unit) as indicated on the RSSI display (no reception (Panasonic RQ-SW44V), or just above threshold with identifiable audio (Panasonic RQ-SW20) on some less-sensitive portable radios). Fair at night, but possibly other stations underneath that I don't remember yet ID'ing.

SW Ohio
I have seldom DX'ed this frequency at night.

Days
WHON Centerville (Richmond) IN - Moderate, but reliable signal, and probably because I live on the west side of Cincinnati.

Nights
Nothing since returning to DXing a couple of years ago, I haven't camped here to check what I can hear. Maybe I'll catch The Real Don Steele on the skip before he signs off at 6.

Transition Hours
WFMD Frederick/Hagerstown MD 5/2.5KW DA-2 - An occasional Sunrise Skip visitor
WKCT Bowling Green KY 5/.5 DA-N - Occasional Sunrise Skip visitor

Adequate reception of WFMD in Frederick, MD about 40 miles north of me, during the daytime. At night, it's pretty much of a mess.

"What do you get on 930, one of the "Mess" frequencies?"

Just that, especially at night.

Although there's more het noise off of KTRO (910) in the daytime, than at night.

Here in Sevierville TN it's all Pigeon Forge Radio all the time. WSEV is a continuous loop of tourist ads and comedy bits from Milton Crabapple. Back in Dayton, Richmond IN's WHON. Most frequent night visitor was WRVC from Huntington WV.
Always been curious about KHJ's signal in their Boss Radio heyday vs. now.

Tuning by early this morning I was quite surprised to hear Milton Crabapple on WSEV, here in SW Michigan. During the day it's WBCK, Battle Creek.

Nice catch in MI. Gotta admit it's an easy station to ID with the programming they air. (someone uploaded a YouTube video of a segment)

Far northwest suburban Chicago, it's semi-local WAUR day/night. At night there's stuff underneath....most notably WBCK and WTAD (Quincy, IL). I've also heard Bowling Green, KY a few times (forget the call letters offhand).

With a loop, I have heard WKY from OK in Glendale, CA, at night. Glendale is on KHJ's night null, so with the loop they can be pretty much eliminated.

WKY in CA - That's incredible!

I have heard all those Cyberdad, add to that WLBL Auburndale (Marshfield), WI near sign-off, sometimes KKIN Aitkin, MN and WEOL Elyria, OH.
930 in Bowling Green, KY is WKCT. WAUR has a terrible signal at night in the Crystal Lake and McHenry county area, so DXing the other stations co-channel are not much of a problem. Not much better in the day. Lately I've been hearing WBCK or WTAD during afternoon critical hours.
