AM Frequency of The Week: 950

What do you guys get on 950?

For me, I've gotten

From Bothell, WA
KJR Seattle, WA (Sports)
KOZE Lewiston, ID (News/Talk)

From Yakima, WA
KJR Seattle
KMTX Helena, MT (Oldies)

For me, it's a semi-local - XEKAM in Tijuana / Rosarito area, usually receivable with a fair to moderately good signal throughout the day and night.

From my vantage point, until 2007 or 2008, I received CHER from Sydney, Nova Scotia regularly. (Sometime late in 2006 I heard Angel in My Pocket - it was an oldies/classic hits station until the FM flip to Classic Rock.) Sometimes, until the AM signal shut down, an overlap between that and CKNB Campbellton, New Brunswick occurred. Since then, it's been faint to decent reception of CKNB depending on outside conditions. I think I even heard a Nickelback song on CKNB once or twice.

For me, it's DC's WCTN with Spanish music, about 25 miles away, with sports talk WXGI down in Fichmond, VA, heard underneath it. At night, it''s a mess of bunch of signals, with WWJ from Detroit coming out on top weakly. WCTN is rated 2500W and WXGI 3900W, daytime.

30 miles north of Chicago it's WNTD with WWJ Detroit sometimes underneath at night.
On rare occasions in the past I've heard Denver underneath Chicago at night.

From Berkeley, CA (SF Bay Area), I get nothing but splatter from the local station, 960 KKGN day and night. However, being far away enough from the transmitter, I can pick up 950 KAHI (at night only).

I've got a local less than two miles away: WROC Rochester (ex-WBBF). Fortunately, it's just a kilowatt and quite directional at that, so I can drive 10 minutes out of its DA lobe and hear WIBX Utica, WWJ Detroit and/or WPEN Philadelphia most any night.

WWJ sneaks through at night sometimes around here, but for the most part it's mud. WWJ doesn't make it as far as Columbus during the day; like most other Detroit stations except WJR, WWJ puts little signal down toward Ohio daytime and almost none at night.

Day: static
Night: mess of primarily Californian stations, KJR being the most audible amongst them

One of those 950s you have darthvader is KAHI Auburn, California, 5kw.

In the LA area:
day: Static.
night: huge mess with XEKAM Tijuana on top of it.

From Lexington KY, 950 brings these stations:

Daytime I Regularly hear:
WXLW, Indianapolis, IN
WYWY, Barbourville, KY

Night-Time I've Heard:
WXLW, Indianapolis, IN
WWJ, Detroit, MI
KPRC, Houston, TX
WORD, Spartenburg, SC

A Sunrise "Regular"
WAKM, Franklin, TN

SW Ohio

Days
WXLW Indianapolis - Weak days.

Sunrise/Sunset
WWJ Detroit - A regular, with varying signal strenth
WAKM Franklin TN - Only once
WYWY Barbourville KY - Only once.
KPRC Houston TX - Only once during this, my third trip down MW DX lane.
WDIG Stuebenville OH - Only once.

Nights
WWJ Detroit
WORD Spartenburg SC

Day: nothing---slop from WINZ 940
Night: faint Radio Reloj in La Habana

cd

Daytime here in Metro Quakake PA, with the DX flak vest on, it's WPEN. But in the car, WADV Lebanon on 940 makes it rough. For 1000 watts, WADV has quite a signal in these parts.

Nighttimes it's usually WWJ coming in over WPEN. One night I caught WXGI Richmond over everything, when they forgot to drop power.

* * * * *

In the Olde Days, in delightful Metro Laurelton, Queens NY, 15 feet from the border into Long Island, it was WPEN as usual. But just a few miles east of there, in Baldwin, WHVW Hyde Park used to come in nicely from up the Hudson.

Sunset in Laurelton WROL Boston used to be darned near a regular -- and a loud one. When WPEN was off at night, and when WWJ was off, KIMN (Top 40) from Denver was loggable.

Far northwest suburban Chicago....

Day, WNTD, or whatever Chicago 950 calls itself.

Night, slop, usually with Chicago on top. What's usually in the mix can also include what used to be KIMN, Denver, what used to be WCAZ Charleston (WV), and most commonly WWJ, Detroit.
