AM Frequency of the Week - 980 kHz

What do you get on 980 AM?

Here in Vermilion, OH I get 2 weak signals mixing together days - WONE/Dayton, OH and CFPL/London, ON. By sunset and into the night, it is much more of a jumble of many stations as the nighttime patterns of WONE and CFPL put me in a null.

I haven't tried that frequency in awhile, but the stations that I most often heard here in the near north Chicago suburbs were WITY Danville, Il during the day & WONE at night.

Only WHSR Pompano Beach days, and a jumble at night; I may have heard WDVH Gainesville FL recently at night. It was either on its nighttime flea power, or accidentally on day power at night.

In the 70s, before Pompano was authorized nights, I was able to hear WRC in DC!

Days: In Bothell, WA I usually would get a very weak CKNW New Westminster, BC with News/Talk. Now in Bellevue I get nothing.

Nights I get CKNW mostly, but also get CJME Regina, SK [News/Talk] and KBBO Selah, WA [News/Talk] at times. I also sometimes get KVLV Fallon, NV [Country] at sunset.

Northern VA,

DC's WTEM with a 50 kW daytime signal, at night weak reception with the nighttime pattern that doesn't really favor my location. A few years ago, I heard WHAW Weston, WV above WTEM during sunset in a November, on I-95 just north of Fredericksburg, VA. WHAW was an oldies station at that time. Never heard WHAW ever since.

From NE NC car radio. 980 WTEM ESPN Washington, DC. Heard days. Nights is a jumble. Still hear WTEM on top.

980 From Lexington, KY:

Daytime:

WONE Dayton, OH (dominant)
WGWM London, KY

Nighttime DX:

WONE Dayton, OH
CFPL London, ON
KMBZ Kansas City, MO
WTEM Washington, DC (most dominant)
WYFN Nashville, TN

From suburban Rochester NY, it's mostly IBOC hash (when it's on) or analog sideband splat from local WDCX 990. But WDCX, though licensed Rochester, transmits from the far west suburbs with a very tight directional pattern, so here in the southeast suburbs some 15 miles away it's nullable, especially at night.

It used to be that CKRU (ex-CHEX) from Peterborough, Ontario was the regular on 980 with the Rochester local nulled, but CKRU moved to FM a few years back. Now it's either CFPL London or WTEM Washington, with WILK Wilkes-Barre sometimes audible at night, too.

Far northwest suburbs of Chicago....

Day: One of the few channels that's more or less blank. Sometimes WCUB (Manitowoc, WI)

Night: The main lobe of WONE is pretty much aimed right at me, so it's pretty reliable. WITY surfaces from time to time. Usually underneath WONE, but occasionally on top. Their main lobe is also aimed right at me, but 5kw WONE generally trumps 1kw WITY! I've also heard KMBZ (KMBR KMBC) a few times, but not recently.

SW Ohio

Days
WONE Dayton - Strong regional

Skip Time
WHAW Weston WV - Like ddsparxx, I heard this station only once, and for me, it was back in 2009. The station is 25 KW NDA days, so I'm surprised it's not being mentioned.

Night
Nothing besides WONE - Because I seldom stop on this frequency.

I second that. Feel free to start a thread listing your receptions, or even better, an evening bandscan.

980 here: WAZS Summerville with a Spanish format. Weaker than other stations in area because farther away (probably 25 miles from the transmitter).

Gets stepped on late afternoons and evenings by WTEM, and signal is usually a mess at night.

In Memphis

Daytime: splatter from local KWAM
Nightime: I assume it's WFYN but I've never really stopped to wait for an ID

Greater Cincinnati.

Day - WONE in Dayton comes in quite well and has for decades.

Night - Nothing definite. At sunset, WONE drops off dramatically. I have heard that in addition to lowering their power at that time, they also go directional north (away from Cincinnati).

WONE doesn't lower power at night, but they do use a directional pattern aimed more NW & SE.

My guess is that WONE is obliged to protect CFPL in London, ON as well as what used to be WRC in Washington DC. To the west/southwest, KMBZ in Kansas City could be also in the equation along with one or two others.

Whatever, as indicated in my earlier post, WONE has a great nighttime signal to the northwest. A strong regular here in northern Illinois.
