AM Frequency of the Week: 980

Crystal Lake, IlL

Days: 980 ia almost always empty. On rare occasions I can sometimes get a whiff of WCUB from Two Rivers, WI....which is about 80 miles north of Milwaukee.

Nighrs.: Ujsually WONE from Dayton, OH. 5kw with a patern that favors me. On too and typicallly with a good signal. WONE more often than not prodiuces WITY, 1kw from Danville, IL. Also with a pattern that favors me

Local KQUE dominates 24/7. When I've caught them off the air at night I've heard KOKA Shreveport with gospel music and WRNE Gulf Shores FL with r&b music. I've also heard KMBZ in the background.

East Tennesee: Daytime: Splatter from WNML-990 for the most part. Sunrise and sunset will bring WONE, Dayton.

Night: Either WONE on sometimes WYFN, the BBN station in Nashville.

Retro/other: Dayton, Ohio, Local WONE Day (former top 40/MOR Country and Adult Standards station, now ESPN)and night, but I heard WYFN with it nulled in the South suburbs (possible WYFN on ND that night as the night pattern has a deep null toward WONE. Lafayette, IN area: A weak WITY days, WONE among others at night.

Central Kansas:
A decent to largely weak KMBZ/KCMO

Northern Iowa:
Other than some splatter from adjacent channel KQAQ/Austin, it’s a vacant frequency

From the southwest suburbs of Chicago:

Days, a weak WITY Danville, IL, is there, but indoors, only with the loop sitting atop the Sony ICF-2010. I wonder if the play-by-play guy who was also the mayor 10-plus years ago is still the mayor. Or the play-by-play guy, for that matter.

Nights, the clubhouse leader was and remains WONE Dayton, though far less distinctive with ESPN than its rollicking top 40 format. Others caught along the way: KMBZ Kansas City, Mo.; CFPL London, Ont.; WFHG Bristol, Va.; and most recently WYFN Nashville, early on Jan. 21.

From Pickerington, Ohio, all WONE with a solid signal daytime. It totally disappears at night with not much in its place. I think I've heard WTEM here a few times, but it's always been extremely weak.

Forgot about CFPL. I've heard them a handfull of times at my location. Around sunrise, mostly. Mixing with WONE. Coincidentally, I'm expecting to be in London (Ontario) next weekend, Anxious to hear what turns up there.

Here in Wood Dale, IL in the near NW suburb of Chicago:

Daytime: usually nothing, but WITY heard in the past
Nightime: WONE

DX/RETRO: I would consider WONE a pest, usually preventing any good DX opportunities. Others heard on this frequency include KSGM (Chester, IL), KMBZ (Kansas City, MO), WCUB (Two Rivers, WI), WFYN (Nashville, TN), WAKV (Otsego, MI), WILK (Wilkes-Barre,, PA), WTEM (Washington DC), WWTB (Bristol, VA), CJME (Regina, SK), CHEX (Peterborough, ON), and TIRI (Alajuelito, Costa Rica). The last two are no longer on the air. My most recent new log on this frequency is WULR (York, SC) in February 2022.

CHEX morphed into CKRU some years back. I'm not sure if they're still on 980 or if they've migrated to FM (or something else).

From the little search on the web it appears that CKRU is now only on FM (100.5) with a classic hits format.

DFW, Texas

Daytime: Spill over from adjacent channel local 970-KHVN.
Nights: KQUE Houston area with Spanish religious and KMBZ Kansas City with news/talk. Either can dominate, depending on conditions. KCAB Dardanelle, AR, River Valley Radio ("Bob") with classic hits also makes regular appearances.

Days here it's semi-semi local WILK. They send a lot of their wattage SW at me.
SSS's's brought in WWWR from Virginia once.
Nights is a mix of WILK, 'WRC' Washington (now WTEM) and the occasional CFPL.

Back in Queens near JFK Airport (WAY back :- ): 980 was largely barren in the day. But the signal from NYC-licensed WJRZ Hackensack NJ was really schivozz by the time it arrived by us. I count 5 SSS stations logged back then, out of 13 total.

That makes sense. When CKRU was on 980, they branded as "Cruisin; Oldies". Pretty good music mix, Not so good audio,

I forgot to mention 'WJRZ Hackensack;s frequency. It was on 970
Sri!
Old logbooks have them as 5000 U-4 -- different patterns day and night. Back when they were just 5000 in the day, their pattern had a bit of a dry spot just east of JFK Airport. Lots of those NYCers with sticks in NJ had the same problems. Daytimer WESO 970 from Massachusetts used to rattle WJRZ pretty bad sometimes in broad daylight.
Now WNYM, they have the identical night pattern -- same wattage as in the 60's / 70's ; same pattern from their three sticks.

I can't locate their old 5000 watt daytime map here. They are now 50,000 !

But indeed, WJRZ / WNYM was and is on 970. Sorry for any confusion. The local newspaper listings had the NYC stations sequenced as 880 - 930 - 970 - 1010 - 1050.
