AM Frequency of the Week - 990 kHz

What have you all gotten on 990 AM?

In Vermilion, OH, days it's a weak WDEO/Ypsilanti, MI sometimes mixing with another. Nights I can usually get CBW/Winnipeg overtop of WDEO.

Far northwest suburbs of Chicago....

Days: WMVP splatter.

Nights: CBW. Almost always alone and usually strong. Sometimes CBW is the "splatter-er" and WMVP is the "splatter-ee" ;D

Near north Chicago suburbs--exactly the same as Cyberdad.

SW Michigan: Daytime: nothing. Nighttime: CBW in the clear most of the time.

Near Crystal Lake, IL (40 miles NW of Chicago)

Days: WMVP splatter!
Sunrise/Sunset: WCAZ Carthage, IL
Nighttime: CBW Winnipeg, MB
CKGM Montreal, QC [Auroral conditions]

Daytime it's a weak WGSO from New Orleans. Only 1 kW but lots of saltwater between them and me. At night, I've never picked anything out for sure, but there is often *something* steady there. I've just never stuck around long enough to ID it. Around sunset I have logged KWAM from Memphis a few times, so maybe that's the same thing I hear at night. They're only 450 watts, though, so I'm skeptical.

My least potent "local" here in Rochester. Rochester-licensed WDCX is a good 15 miles west of here with a very directional pattern aimed east into downtown Rochester and slightly north of me, in the southeastern suburbs. I can't get past WDCX by day, but it's pretty easy to null at night; I've regularly heard CBW Winnipeg and WNTP Philadelphia underneath it. CKGM Montreal comes in from time to time, too.

Northern VA,

Very weak WLEE from Richmond, with 1 kW non-directional days and 13 W at night, during the day, along with some local ESPN 980 splatter. At night, it's a mess with WNTP Philly on top.

From Perth Western Australia - local 6RPH, talk and reading for the blind.

From Port Douglas Queensland, 4RO Rockhampton QLD, talk

Day-Nothing in the summer
Night:
IRIB Iran on top 400 kw@790 miles
AIR North India program in Iran's null 50 kw@540 miles
Radio Sawa relay Cyprus at times 600 kw, I am in their lobe@1830 miles
I have yet to hear Mongolia on 990, but they are a regular on long wave.
Classic TRF built in antenna
Kandahar, Afghanistan

When I'm on the beach at the stateline, the 990 from Knoxville has been a semi-regular nighttimes IME. Maybe that's what you're hearing. I also get the weak...but steady....New Orleans 990 during the day. Neither the Pensacola 980 nor the Robertsdale (or wherever) 1000 is much of a problem.

Memphis: KWAM all the time. sometimes at night something's trying to come through underneath, but I've never been able to ID it.

Do you happen to know if the 990 in Knoxville is still sports?

Yes....it's been all sports every time I've heard it. Lots of UT stuff and ESPN, IIRC.

From late afternoon until morning, CBW rules that frequency in Duluth, Minnesota (about 300 miles away from the transmitter). When driving at night I often turn to it when there's nothing of on interest on my local FM stations. Unfortunately, WMVP also comes in, and they are able to cause it major interference with their IBOC.

I've also heard CKGM from Montreal on there.

From NE NC. 990 days WLEE Richmond,VA. WBTE Windsor, NC now silent. Nights WNML Knoxville, TN, WEEB Aberdeen, NC, WNTP Philadelphia, PA. All on car radio.
