AM Frequency of the Week: 990

Detroit, MI suburbs:

Day: Local WDEO Ypsilanti, MI. ~20 miles.

Night: Monitored 990 KHz from 9-945pm this evening. Stations received:

- WDEO, weak. 20 miles west of me. All but disappears on their night pattern at 250w.

- CBW, good signal if I rotate my loop in its direction.

- WNML Knoxville, TN. CBS Sports radio. This is a new one for me.

- Something else? Music, classic hits. Faded above the slop several times. I heard U2 and Pink Floyd. I checked webstreams and playlists but nothing seems to match..

Equipment: DX Engineering RF-Pro 1B loop (Similar to Wellbrook) in the backyard 150' behind the house, and Sony XDR-S10HDiP receiver.
Livonia here, which suburb?

In the "retro" section, which I often use to describe what I heard in Missouri in the 1970s or 1980s, I forgot to mention now-deleted WCAZ Carthage, Illinois, which was a reliable daytime presence in central and northern Missouri. This station is not related to the current WCAZ on 1510. This thread from 2017 provides a reasonably good description of what happened to the station, which had been on the air since 1922; the FCC deleted it in 2017: https://www.radiodiscussions.com/threads/after-95-years-990-wcaz-carthage-il-is-deleted.702513/

In the W-B(Northeast PA) area, it's mostly splatter from WILK 980. However, on a SPARC radio and using a tunable "loop antenna" set to a right position, I was able to null out WILK and heard a weak signal of WNTP from Philadelphia during the day. This is not possible on other radios I owned.

At night, I mostly received CKGM 990 from Montreal. When I first started DXing more than 20 years ago, I remembered hearing oldies music played on the station.

East-central Iowa: nothing in the daytime. Used to hear a weak but audible WCAZ from Carthage, IL, as mentioned above. Usually CBW at night. Not always, but often, CBW is a good solid signal and I've even had it on one of the presets in my car, since it is one of a very few AM stations I actually love listening to.

I remember when I was a little kid picking up the 990 from Philly. I wonder how that happened. That remains a mystery to me.

Central Kentucky:

Days: WWKY Winchester.
Great day signal and one of my favorites. "Wonderful Winchester KentuckY"

Nights: Usually WNML Knoxville with WWKY underneath.

When they did their DX test back in April, and they were on day power, the night signal wasn't great here despite only being 44 miles away, but days they're like a local.

From NW San Antonio:

Day: A moderate signal from semi-local KAML, 70 miles SE in Kenedy, TX. It plays mostly country Christian and some Spanish-language Christian music.

Sunset: KFCD in Farmersville, TX, is heard if I aim NE/SW, with XET in Monterrey mixing in at times. Occasionally KRMO in Cassville, MO, will pop in with local sports, and it sometimes come to the fore briefly. Aiming NW/SE it's still KAML.

Night: KAML drops to 70 watts and disappears. To the NE/SW it's KFCD and XET mixing, with KFCD most often dominating. In past years XET was the dominant one, and I'm wondering if KFCD has been staying on 7 kW day power at night lately. Aiming NW it's like a graveyard with a faint mush of signals and KFCD or XET occasionally popping through. A weak KSVP, news talk in Artesia, NM, will sometimes come up for brief bits.

Sunrise: Similar to nighttime but with KSVP heard a bit more and KAML returning when it goes back to 250 watts day power.

DX/Retro: On rare occasions I've heard XECL in Mexicali and WGSO in New Orleans.

One-time catches include CBW in Winnipeg (night), Radio Guamá in Cuba (night), KWAM in Memphis (sunset), and classic country KRSL in Russell, KS (sunrise).

Also, underneath the KFCD/XET nighttime mess, I'll occasionally hear fadeups of urban gospel songs, which I presume is KZZB in Beaumont based on the NE direction.

DFW, Texas

Daytime: KFCD Farmersville, TX with Spanish Christian at 40ish miles to my east.

Nights: With KFCD at reduced power, I can get a N/S null which most times yields a fair XET Monterrey. If northern conditions prevail, I can hear a fair to good CBW Winnipeg on top. Heard a few times, KWAM Memphis with talk programming.

Jim, I can confirm that KFCD is lowering power at night. It would be standing alone on 990 if it were running day power. It is not; barely perceptible in Tyler after dark.

Crystal Lake,iL (Far NW suburban Chicago area).....

Days: Splatter from local WMVP (1000)

Nighta: All CBW from Winnipeg, MB, Usually with a strong signal.

Other Locaation: When we're at Perdido Key (near Pensacola), 990 by day is a weak signal from WGSO;s 500 watts via saltwater path. Under moderate splatter from local WRNE (980)ver at night. CBW. WNML from Knoxville usually takes overat night. CBW is very elusive and normally absent entirely.
I've easily heard CBW as far away as Bellingham, WA. Other people have said you can pick it up on the east coast as well. If that's the case, that long time radio mystery of Is There A Station That Can Be Heard Coast To Coast has been answered.

Agree. And that;s a good answer. I think WHO has been in the conversation. As has WBAP, and thr Chicgo 50kw non-directional flamethrowers with the possible exception of WSCR 670.
