AM Frequency of the Week

Far northwest limits of the Chicago Metro.....

Day: WSQR from Sycamore, IL. Fair-good signal

Night: WHAM with a good signal. Sometimes mixing with Cuba. Worth noting that it used to be WHAM all alone, but as David has noted. the Cubans have upgraded their AM transmitters (with a major assist from the Chinese). It would seemingly stand to reason that this explains why Cuba on 1180 is no longer a rarity. Certainy WSQR dropping to ONE watt at night is a non-issue.

Sunrise: WSQR seems to have a habit of powering up before local (or even Rochester) sunrise. Day power is 900 watts. Not sure if they're going all the way up to that point, but the result is WSQR and WHAM end up at almost equal strength here.

Based on your reports, it looks like 1180 is our frequency this week :)

From the Chicago lakefront area:

During the day I'll most commonly hear WXLA, which is in the Lansing area. If I'm away from the lakeshore I can also sometimes hear WSQR in DeKalb County IL.

At night I've only heard WHAM in Rochester. WXLA still operates at night apparently but I've never heard it break through.

OOPS! My bad. Yes....our "mystery frequency of the week" is.....(drum roll).....1180! I thought I had typed that in, but apparently I either didn't or it was inadvertently deleted.

At one time, several years ago, WSQR and WXLA were running the same satellite-delivered music format. So if you were somewhere along the southern shore of Lake Michigan, radio tuned to 1180, the "mystery" was which of the two you might be hearing.

Maybe an echo/reverb effect if you could hear them both.

1180-East Tennessee. Daytime-local WKCE which has undergone many ownership and format changes. For some time several years ago, they were running oldies (more mainstream than the current version from Mid-Century Radio)and staying on 24/7 (they are a daytimer). It was widely heard at that time.

Night-WHAM and/or the Cuban Chorus (echo from multiple Radio Rebelde transmitters, jamming Radio Marti).

Ohio and Indiana locations would sometimes bring WGAB, Newburgh, IN

Here in Wood Dale, IL (near NW suburb of Chicago):

Daytime: WSQR
Nightime: WHAM with sometimes Cuban interference

DX/Retro: others heard on this frequency are WLDS (Jacksonville, IL), WJNT (Pearl, MS), WSAF (Trion, GA), WGAB (Newburgh, IN) plus the various Radio Rebelde transmitters jamming Radio Marti. Back in 1982 also heard a Radio Reloj outlet from Cuba.

West Central Georgia:

Days: nothing

Night: weak reception of Cuban station that covers Radio Marti, never hear WHAM

Dawn/Dusk: Have heard WVLZ Knoxville TN oldies (10K daytime), WJNT Pearl/Jackson MS news/talk (50K daytime) and WLTT Carolina Beach NC Spanish/Christian (10K daytime)
