AM HD TURNOFF PACE ACCELERATES

In Reply No. 652 (six hundred fifty-two!?!), Savage said,
It's interesting to note that most of the recent turn-offs are Clear Channel stations. CC has also stopped running the HD on-air promos (as reported on several sites.) Perhaps clearer thinking is starting to prevail at Clear Channel??

If you’re looking for another indication that Cheap Channel is abandoning “HD,” try this one:
http://mediaconfidential.blogspot.com/2011/08/hd-radios-slow-death-continues.html

I’m not directing you to Richard Wagoner’s lame lament about what might have been (because what he envisions never could have been, at least not for a system with so many fatal engineering flaws in its basic design).

Instead, I want you to read that first comment from Jack Kratoville. Now who is Jack Kratoville?

He does weekends and fill-ins at WLTW, 106.7 “Lite FM”—a Cheap Channel station.

A few years ago, Struble probably could have picked up the phone and had Kratoville fired for that comment, but not today. Apparently, reality has set in at CC, at least on this subject!

Is it true that all AM radio stations in Boston have turned off all their HD transmitters?
Sadly WBZ still pumps it out.
We have figured out it doesn't work for smaller stations. It barely (I'm being "nice") works for the bigger ones.

Yeah but if Castro ever gets his hands on it, kiss MW goodbye! HD is great @ jamming! By the way, this is post #664. Will whomever posts #666 please be pro AMHD so we can use that as proof that IBOC's in league with the radio devil. Thanks!

Hey, AM-HD sounds GREAT! I play it through my stereo system and LOVE IT! FM quality? Try CD quality with excellent stereo sound! :D :D :D

Just listen to samples and you'll LOVE IT! Buy it NOW! :D

Lets pit AM -HD to bed. Doesnt work. have the Sony unit and it cant lock WBZ from 25 miles from xtmr.
When Culmus takes over Citadel, will they turn back on the FM HDs that were turned off?

Yep! 225 is the sorry count right now, with five more stations dumping HD-AM this summer (so far.)

A great Christmas present (to all) would be for us to be under 200 stations by year's end.

Tick....tock......tick..... ;D

Clear Channel's 106.7 Lite FM hasn't been in HD for weeks. Apparently the HD transmitter failed and replacing it is a very low priority.

HAHAHAHA! Bob Strudel, er, Stubble, erm, whatever his name is couldn't have said it better himself!

Where are you, R.F. Burns?

I think R.F. retired. He doesn't like to come out to play anymore.
Retired is no excuse.

Start the "Where is R.F Burns?" post. He may be playing in another thread.

I miss old R.F. :D

I think he may be ok, still alive and kicking. At least that's what I heard.

Maybe he finally used that A-1 engineering expertise of his to come to the realization that this HD thing is really as horrible as we all say it is and he could no longer defend it. Wouldn't that be a hoot?

Do they say "hoot" in NY?

I suspect that good-ole R.F. finally BurnED-OUT—after repeated attempts to futilely-justify his favorite "Science Fair Project"—a.k.a. "AM HD Radio". Possibly, his incessant pro-HD logic became permanently "grounded" after more of it ended-up flowing to his emitter than collector – thus unbalancing and thermally threatening any continued operation. What we have here is a case of one who followed his Corporate Radio Masters to a state requiring mental life support, yet belittled one who appreciated the electronic faculties of a beloved McIntosh MR-78 tuner – BTW, you can still have one for $1200 on eBay! I have but one remaining question: WHEN will we get the "opportunity" to bid on a retired Harris DeathStar AM-HD light show on eBay... I'll be accepting educated guesses on what the "winning" bid will be :D

My guess is that it will be $20. Eventually, it won't be much more than a "curiosity" of the early 21st century.

It might be a while yet! I suspect most of these were assigned some lengthy capital life period and will have to sit mostly unused (but accounted for) in the transmitter building right besides the card decks, tape machines and broken furniture until they fall off the books....

Best regards,

*Card* is typographical error, should read *CART*...

Watt, you had me going with Card Machine. I was thinking, ok, Ocean's 11, they had a card machine.

But ah, cart machine. I'll bet Pepper-Tanner never traded for a card machine. (I would have one if they had).

As I think about it, there was a punch-card based traffic system we had many years ago... I'll bet that damn thing is still on someones asset list and has 10 more years on it! Just think about it, those HD boxes will only be at their half-life of dust collection when those punch-card readers fall off! That's funny......

Best regards,
