AM highlights Perdido Key, FL and Memphis, TN

Can I do a "Two-fer?" Is that legal for a thread? :) Not all that much new or surprising this time around on the beach (near Pensacola) or on the way home with an overnight stop in Memphis. But a few "tidbits" All of these are nighttime unless otherwise indicated,,

Perdido Key (23 miles west-southwest of downtown Pensacola) June 4-11....

540: WASG....longtime occupant of 550, then later at 540. Apparently now off the air. I kept checking the channel daily (daytime) and never heard it, Normally, it would have been a fair signal from about 35 miles away at 2.5kw. I did hear something very faint on the channel, presumably WDAK, but I couldn't ID it.

590: The Panama City 590 is also apparently off. I was hearing a faint R. Nacional from Cuba during the day. Stronger at night.
740: Always an interesting "roll of the dice" daytime. This time around it was WMSP from Montgomery. 10kw mostly aimed south.
800: I was hoping for PJB via daytime salt water path. Instead it was all WSHO (New Orleans). 1kw 160 miles via saltwater
840: One night WHAS was absent (as posted in another thread). Presumably Cuba, but I couldn't ID it. Whatever it was also turned up a couple of other times during the week.
890: R. Progresso repeatedly blowing out WLS.
1030: VERY weak Spanish. Orlando? No trace of KCTA unlike my past couple of my trips to the beach. (Daytime)
1050: XEG the strongest of the Mexican blowtorches. (XEX on 730 also quite good).
1090: KAAY suprisingly weak. Usually quite a bit stronger. Not sure what's going on.

Memphis: June 13 nighttime

560: Dead air! Just the carrier. I kept checking over the course of about 90 minutes between around 9 and 10:30pm CDT. Is this what's become of WHBQ? George Klein, Wink Msrtindale and Dewey Phillips must be spinning in their graves.
640: Thought I'd try for KFI. Wound up with R. Progreso.
670: All WSCR, but witth Cuba underneath. Splatter from the Memphis 680 wasn't that much of an issue.
740: All KRMG with a good signal. No trace of CFZM.
830: All WCCO wiyth a fair signal. No cheaters tonight.
1070: WDIA barely audible at my location about fifteen miles east of downtown Memphis.
1180: R. Rebelde getting the best of WHAM

If any of you guys have questions about whatever else i was hearing (or not hearing), let me know.

Bonaire is 1,750 miles from Perdido Key, so really much too far for daytime propagation, even over saltwater. And the signal passes over mountainous eastern Cuba, which would block any groundwave water path.

I knew it was an extreme longshot (no pun intended), but I was thinking that given the brute force that they're using, perhaps I'd have a shot at it. Then after I posted, I realized that. IIRC, PJB beams their day signal to South America.

Trans World Radio does not operate during the day, only 7pm-1am in English and Spanish toward Cuba and 4:30-7am in Portuguese for Brazil. Even with 440,000 watts, they'd mostly be covering fish during the daytime. They have an FM on Bonaire for the locals. TWR Bonaire
 
I don't have much experience in Memphis, but the last time I was down there, in the fall of 2009 when I was moving home from Houston, I remember 740 being all KRMG. I never expected to hear KTRH, but thought I might hear CFZM. That said, I've read a lot of reports of KRMG being heard not far south of me in parts of Kentucky. In Columbus, CFZM is a blaster.

Way on the other side of Tennessee (400 miles east of Memphis), it's mostly CFZM but often KRMG takes over. I don't remember ever getting KRMG in Ohio but it wouldn't be impossible with auroral conditions

KRMG is sometimes in the nighttime mix at Perdido Key. CFZM usually is not. Which to me is a bit surprising.

I was flat-out astonished. I did hear something underneath it, but it was basically buried to deep to ID. My best guess is KWTO, but who knows.

KRMG sometimes turns up under CFZM at my home location in northeast Illinois. Usually, however, CFZM blows out everything on the channel....unless you null it.

KRMG usually appears in Northern Illinois for me during critical hours especially in the fall and winter.

A friend in Mobile has heard WASG 540 every day this week
 
We had a power outage yesterday morning here in Foley and I heard WASG then. WHEP was still off the air so I was able to hear a few stations I don't normally hear because I'm so close to them. And I'm hearing gospel now, although it seems weaker than normal. Maybe they're running on low power?
 
The only MW DXing I did right on the Gulf Coast was at Grand Isle, Lousiana in the late 1980s. I recall a lot of Cubans, probably some Mexican stations in the mix (Spanish language heard on maybe 1/4 to 1/3 of the channels), and Reloj, which was cool to hear, because I'd never heard it before. Did you hear Reloj?
