am i the only one who finds these "Retro" Posts B O R I N G.. they take up space and shove all the REAL topics down and off the list..
just sayin'

What are you talking about specifically?

After all, this is the Classic TV board...just sayin'.

Don't read them, then. Everyone has their favorite and not-so-favorite subjects. The ones I don't care for, or am not familiar with, are the ones that I don't read. But the rest of us have their own favorites, and they may or may not like what I post. That's why there are so many boards on this site.

In other words: Lighten up, Francis - er, WhoDat! ;)

I'm bored if it's a market I don't know, never lived in, never worked in.
Not otherwise.

I'm more bored if it's recent; less bored if they go further back.

I'm curious though. How/where does anyone get hold of these old schedules? I've never seen schedules like these online (most are very pre-Internet). Does somebody have an attic full of old TV Guides?

Well..... "WhoDat!" - if you don't like what you see, find another board if you're so "boring" ;). As for the rest of us, we know that this board is a treasure trove of historical information you can't find anywhere else. The Classic TV board is phenomenal!

Some of the schedules came from past editions of local newspapers and some came from past editions of TV Guide (or their microfilmed versions).

Once in a blue moon you'll come across a flea market or antique shop that has old TV Guide editions. That's where I found a few dating from the '50s to the '80s. They were all addressed to the same person, who kept them for some reason or another.

For me, the retro posts are a great source of reading. One of my favorite features. I'm sorry Whodat that you may have to click to the next page to see some topics that aren't on page 1 but we all have our burdens to bear. ::)

Thanks for the info.

I appreciate the amount of work it takes to input old schedules - from a magazine or library microfilm - into a PC.

Whodat: There are a lot of active threads at any time. You don't have to read all of them - or any of them. There's no test tomorrow. And it's not like your mother telling you to eat everything set before you and clean your plate. What you find most fascinating, somebody else finds boring. It cuts both ways.

You probably would have felt differently about reading past TV schedules from Jackson if you had a personal connection to the place. Where is this particular Jackson located, by the way?

I agree with most of the others; if you don't like it, move on.

Having said that, I don't logging through all those lists of old TV Guide schedules. Links to ACTUAL TV Guides is another thing. I posted one that I found on another website, and look through it often.

But this website is certainly large enough to handle pretty much everything it is handling. And doing a damn good job of it too.

I'm a refugee from some of the websites centered around NYC and WABC. The whole feeling here is friendlier and refreshing.

Joe

I'll take a look at the retro schedules for the Memphis, Nashville, or Paducah, KY area, but not much of the others, but I do like the classic TV discussions.

I believe he said "Jackson, Mississippi".

^"Miss" appeared more like a typographical error than a short form of the name Mississippi when I saw it here originally.

Yeah, same here.  I might also add Cape Girardeau to that list.

I could probably add Cape and Jonesboro, AR as well. WPSD in Paducah and KFVS in Cape were on the Dyersburg, TN cable system until just before the digital conversion. KAIT in Jonesboro wasn't on cable, but we could get a weak OTA signal.

Back several years ago, it was the "Retro Schedules" that gave birth eventually to the Classic TV Board we enjoy today. Before people started posting "subjects" it was nearly all Retro Schedules at first..I usually enjoy Cleveland area schedules from the 50's to the 70's, though I'll scan most schedules from the same time period for just about any market. I will say this..There has been a marked improvement in the creativity of the subjects the last couple of months. Lots of interesting conversations..

For some strange unbeknownst reason, I kept the Fall Preview issue back in 1970. (Looking back now, I did a lot of strange things in my youth). Then I did it again in 1971. From there it just grew. So now I have every Fall Preview issue going back to 1970—and I really have no idea why. Every few years when I'm in a cleaning out mood, I come across that box of TV Guides and spend a few minutes flipping through some of them. The thing that amazes me most is how many shows have come and gone over the years—and I've never even heard of them.

The things we keep! I guess in the grand scheme of things, a carton full of TV Guide Fall Previews is harmless. I mean, it's not like the show Hoarders is coming after me. But a couple years ago during one of my clean outs, I also found some boxes of old Look and Life magazines from the '70s. It felt bad to just throw them out, so I found a thrift store that was more than happy to take them. They told me people do buy stuff like that... especially items from a certain date that's meaningful to them.

I remember that, and I think someone had suggested a separate board for the schedules, but nothing ever came of it.
