Am I the only person listening to HD?

I recently moved my HD radio to the garage to be able to listen to the Reds while I restore my old car. wLW is driving me nuts. The analog and HD are not in sync. So when I lose HD (when I walk by the radio, when the kegerator kicks in, when a thick cloud passes over) I time warp 7 seconds. It is unlistenable. Does anyone listen or is HD just a joke? Should I go to the shack and buy a crappy old AM or buy MLB.com?

I liked HD in Dayton before the format changes set in. Now there are no HD oldies or classic rock, and none in sight. WTUE HD-2 is a sports station!

It's basically a joke. I live close enough to the WLW tower that I never lose the HD signal, but there are a lot of people in that fringe area, like you seem to be. I would suggest getting a good solid AM radio, like the CCRadio or the Sangean PR-D5, which I have. They both have the same huge internal AM antenna which results in great AM reception. I stood on my driveway at noon and picked up WSCR, WBBM, and WLS, all from Chicago.

I got mine from Universal Radio, which is in Reynoldsburg: http://www.universal-radio.com/catalog/spcialty/0068.html

I think they turn the analog delay off for Reds games for the people listening at the game. It's generally in sync the rest of the time. I've had HD for years and enjoy it.

Does the S in your initials stand for Struble?

The 8 second delay is inherent in the HD sideband signal which is why most HD AM stations turn it off during live sporting events.

Depending on the radio, you may have a way to "force" it to analog or to digital so that it does not blend back and forth. My Kenwood has a Receive Mode setting for just that purpose, i.e. "ballgame" mode. However, I do not have a similar feature on my Accurian desktop radio.

I get that. I don't get why its fading in and out.

Before WJR turned theirs off, i could pick it up where i live. Some 50 miles from their "Downriver Detroit" site.
I do use a Select A Tenna, though.

The best part of an HD Radio unit is the better Analog tuner that is in it.

H D = Hardly Desirable. In most markets it's a dumping ground for formats that fail on regular terrestrial radio, or for very niche formats. There's never any personality, just computerized "Corporate I-pod" programming. Trying to find a reasonably priced H D radio is like trying to find an honest politician. At Wal-Mart and K-mart you can't find one with a search warrant. Bonus feature: limited coverage area. The only H D signal I ever enjoyed was WTUE's deep cuts. I thought Tony Tilford did an awesome job of balancing mainstream and rare cuts, I was sorry to see it go. Maybe Mike Leak can pick a new one up for me on his next visit to Macy's. ;D

HD is a joke. That said, I live about 60 miles from Cincinnati and never have a problem with WLW switching back and forth between analog and digital. I did put about 8 extra turns of wire on the loop antenna that came with my Sony XDR-F1HD tuner. And WLW is the only AM station I can get in HD.

But seriously, the technology is deader than AM stereo in the marketplace, and the industry needs to just give up and move on.

From downtown Hamilton office building my Accurian does fine for Reds games, even when I can tell the signal is fading I never get a time delay issue. 1360 also fades from time to time and is always in time. the 1360 signal also sounds very nice. I use a loop AM antennae and a Terk for FM. The FM drives me crazy through, very difficult to find the best antennae position but I mostly listen to sports talk during the day so it works out great. Until HD gets a stronger more reliable signal I don't know how valuable it is going to be.
