AM IBOC Spectral Display in QST

For those of you who would like to see how the AM IBOC signal appears on a spectrum analyzer, there's an interesting article on Page 33 of the July 08 issue of QST magazine.

Figure 1, taken from a Winrad display, clearly shows the primary digital sidebands of WHAS (840 kHz) extending from 830 down to 825, and from 850 up to 855. Of course, the "spikes" at 10 kHz intervals are the analog AM carriers. The digital carriers also show up on the "waterfall" display as light blue stripes.

The author made a minor mistake in referring to HD as "high definition", but otherwise it's a good article.

Yes, and he also shared his method for receiving adjacent channels to an IBOC station: Tuning to the farthest sideband from the IBOC carrier of the adjacent in SSB mode. I myself think either carrier would work as long as the radio was set to SSB although the one farther away should have a little less hash on it. And then again I only glanced at the article.

PF, can you post a link to the photo?

I haven't been able to locate it on line, but you may be able to find a paper copy of QST at your local public or college library.

ARRL does offer selected articles in PDF form on their web site; however, this page (featuring the June table of contents) hasn't been updated yet, so I'm not sure if the spectrum analysis piece from the July issue will appear or not:
