AM IBOC

I was on I-75 Friday and noticed that 1380's IBOC was killing the 1400 in Z'hills in Wesley Chapel and New Tampa area. 1400 had a good signal but the hash from 1380 was too annoying. 1250's IBOC was also killing the 1230 in Lakeland all along 75 east of Tampa. Again 1230 had a listenable signal. Amazing what's going on so that the 5 or 6 folks who have IBOC receivers in Tampa can listen to the glorious fidelity on 1250 and 1380. I guess they call 1400 and 1230 graveyard channels for a reason! :-\

Welcome to the world of digital radio. Fixing a problem that never existed. Many of the high power IBOC AM's have shut down the digital hash at nite. I've noticed WFLA's not on at nite anylonger. Radio Dizzy is still running it, but all of the former ABC stations now owned by Citadel have shut down IBOC. Yes it will destroy the coverage area of a lot of smaller stations

I've noticed that 1380 was not running their IBOC hash at night then a few weeks after the memo came out from ABC/Citadel they starting leaving the IBOC on 24/7.

Graveyard channels are not the only ones losing coverage due to IBOC ; 640 a.m. WVLG out of the Villages has had it's southern fringe area reduced by about 8 miles due to the sideband hash was WDAE-620.

I'm guessing that people in the Plant City area that used to be able to receive both 950 and 990 out of Orlando, don't have that option anymore as well.

I can't pick up 1220 AM from Sarasota. I live in the central Pinellas County. I used pick up that signal with a Terk AM antenna on GE Superadio II. Now, I try to listen outside of my house, I can barely hear it. AM radio isn't as fun since IBOC, HD and all the other things that they allow stations to do with their signals. Especially the one's owned by Clear Channel. I guess these small stations, the ones that I want to listen to at home and on my car radio stream on the internet. So they aren't as concerned about distance of their signal.

I'm a little closer to Sarasota than DAW, since I live in S.E. St Petersburg and with my GE Superadio III can still pick up both 1220 and 1280 out of Sarasota, but 1230-WONN Lakeland is no longer receivable here , thanks to the hash from "infomercial 1250"'s IBOC hash.

At least I can hear the colon cleanse informercials in IBOC as well as the other informercials that WHNZ offers as part of their public service and committment to great programming!

From what I've read on other boards, at least we don't have too much nighttime IBOC here; KDKA 1020 Pittsburgh and WBZ- 1030 Boston are both running the IBOC hash 24/7 and many people living in n.e. PA that have always depended on KDKA for regional and state news, no longer have that option. Interesting enough, but KDKA and WBZ are co-owned by the same corperate conglomerate.
