AM music stations

Do you live in a city or town that plays music on AM?

It would be fun to have a list when traveling, what AM station near you plays music? Whether it's fulltime, part time or a specialty show, what station is it and what type of music is played.

Anything is fair game, oldies, big band, blues, r and b, classic hits, tropical, regional Mexican, rock, metal, MOR, Gospel. Even if you just have a theme show once a week list it. This is just a fun post. I thought this woule be a fun conversation.

The closest AM to me plays the True Oldies Channel, but it is very weak (a graveyarder). Manitowoc, WI has an AM that plays country and another one that plays AC music.

Houston has the heritage KCOH at 1230. It has urban talk during the day but play urban oldies every evening, all night, and all weekend. Full-time Gospel has 3 signals here, 1140 KYOK Conroe TX, 1360 KWWJ Baytown TX, & 1500 KANI. Wharton TX. Regional Mexican is on Houston's 850 KEYH. 1520 KYND Cypress TX and 1540 KGBC are simulcasting C.R.I. programming which features a couple of music shows dispersed amongst news and talk programs from around the world. If you're up early enough, local programming director and veteran DJ Chuck Tiller spins a single oldie to start the day at 5:20 on Salem's 1070 KNTH every weekday. There are a number of Asian and Arabic music stations here as well if that interests you. Those are 900 KREH Pecan Grove TX, 1050 KCHN Brookshire TX, 1090 KULF Bellville TX, 1110 KTEK Alvin TX only on the weekends, and 1480 KLVL Pasadena TX.

I work for one..

"Classy 1400 & 94.5" WKBI Saint Marys, PA
1KW non Directional full time on 1400 and 250W at 362 feet on 94.5

its a satelitte service from Dial Global, referred to as adult standards, but to me it's really soft adult oldies.

WDSG 1450 Dyersburg, TN - Oldies
WTRB 1570 Ripley, TN - Country
WJAK 1460 Jackson, TN - Blues
WTNE 1500 Trenton, TN - Southern gospel
That's just off the top of my head, with possibly more to come.

WENK-AM 1240, Union City, TN, and WTPR AM 710, Paris, TN, simulcast oldies/classic hits (WTPR-FM simulcast on 101.7)
WSM-AM 650, Nashville, country (specifically classic country)
WAMB-AM, Nashville, standards (simulcast on translator at 99.3)
WMRO-AM 1560, Gallatin, TN, hot AC (pays the bills with religious services all day on Sunday)

PHOENIX:

1230 AM - KOY (adult standards)
1440 AM - KAZG (oldies)
1580 AM - KMIK (Radio Disney)

Several Spanish language stations as well (various formats) at: 740, 860, 1150, 1400

The interesting thing is that all of those stations combined don't have a 0.5 share in 25-54.

Is 860 no longer gospel? And 1150 does not get a 10 mV/m signal into all but an itsy-bitsy corner of Maricopa County, so really is not a Phx station... plus it is supposedly talk programming (or was last I could hear it)

Firepoint,
I had thought about 1240 in Unoin City and 710 in Paris, but couldn't think of the call letters and didn't have the chance to look them up yet. Thanks.

I also need to make a correction in my earlier post: 1450 in Dyersburg is WTRO. WDSG was the old call letters, and I don't know why I posted that. ::)

There's been an increase in AM stations in Memphis being used to feed FM translators with new music stations:

WUMY 830 - Country, feeds W288BJ Y-105.5
WMPS 1210 - Currently stunting with classic hits, could become a feed for another translator according to posts on the Memphis board
WOWW 1430 - Classic hits, feeds W249BN Guess 97.7

More from the Memphis area:

WMC 790 - Classic country
WGSF 1030 - Spanish
WDIA 1070 - Classic Soul and R&B
KXIQ 1180 - Classic country
WAVN 1240 - Southern gospel?
WLOK 1340 - Black gospel
WLRM 1380 - Spanish
WBBP 1480 - Black gospel

Amazing that even I didn't catch that one! They, too, now have an FM translator, don't they? I recall listening to them on one when I was last in Dyersburg a couple of years ago.

And to add to my own list, WAMB is on AM 1200, but I omitted that from my own previous list.

Also to add, WAKM in Franklin, TN, on AM 950, is a country station, but I believe that they are satellite-fed most of the time, especially during off-hours. Their studios are near Cool Springs, but I am guessing that they have been in that area since back when it was very rural. They probably couldn't afford to move there now!

You're right about WAKM, they have a local morning show.. I believe they do tradio/swap n sell and a local talk show.. but after 10am or so, it's the Real Country satelitte feed from Cumulus Media.

Yes, WTRO has a translator on 101.7, although I wish it was on a different frequency. I listen to them at times and it has a spotty signal in Alamo, where I live, but it fights with a K-LOVE translator on the same frequency in Brownsville. I'd rather be able to hear WTRO in this case, but the K-LOVE translator was there first, and WTRO requested to move there anyway, which I think was a dumb move.

KAAM (770, Garland/Dallas/Fort Worth, Texas) -- plays Adult Standards/Oldies

KCLE (1460, Burlison/Cleburne, Texas) -- A couple of weeks ago the station switched from Classic Country music and became an ESPN affiliate in Dallas/Fort Worth.

1420 WKCW Warrenton, Virginia. They play oldies. And I think they have a few brokered talk shows. They're automated from what I can tell with NBC News and announcements to advertise on the station.

850 WAXB Ridgefield, CT. They're Classic Hits with a 107.3 FM Translator. Used to be affiliated with The True Oldies Channel.

WQUN 1220 Hamden, CT. They're Adult Standards. Local Morning Show, Local News Updates, CBS News, and sports from Quinnipiac University which owns the station. Formerly affiliated with The Music of Your Life Network.

WROW 590 Albany, NY. - Oldies. Magic 590 moved from 100.9 FM.

WARE 1250 Ware, Mass - Real Oldies 1250.

1520 WIZZ Greenfield, Mass - They play really obscure Oldies.

1290 WCCC West Hartford, CT (Antenna is on Avon Mountain, Studios are in Hartford). IMUS in the Morning. Classical Music all day. Plus play-by-play of sports from both high schools in West Hartford.

1350 WINY Putnam, CT. - Full Service Adult Contemporary Station in Northeast Connecticut.

860 WSBS Great Barrington, Mass. - AC and Talk. 94.9 FM Translator.

Plus Connecticut has an abudence of AM stations playing Spanish Music (see below):

840 WRYM New Britain (Antenna and Studios are in Newington). Also plays Polish and Italian Music on Sundays.

910 WLAT New Britain (Antenna is in Farmington, Studios are in East Hartford)

990 WXCT Southigton (Simulcasts WSPR/Springfield, Mass 10AM-6AM Mon-Friday). Runs Spanish Christian programming (some of it Music) in Saturdays. Plays Italian and Polka Music on Sundays.

1120 WPRX Bristol (Antenna is in Bristol. Studios are in Berlin)

1230 WNEZ Manchester (Antenna is in Machester, Studios are in East Hartford)

1450 WCUM Bridgeport (this is by far the worst sounding AM stations in Connecticut. Their ground system is all mucked up. And they're only running around 499 watts out of the 1000 watts they're licensed for. When I picked them up on the Amtrak train going through Bridgeport on my way to Philly I thought the station sounded as bad as two tin cans with string.

And then there's 1380 WFNW in Naugatuck. They were Portuguese then changed to Spanish and I think they're back to Portuguese again.

860 is Gospel...and it sounds glorious in HD.

I enjoy listening to AM740 out of Toronto, Canada in the evening. You can listen to them at zoomerradio.ca or am740.ca.

My location is Evansville, Indiana. The car radio presets on AM are music....

650 WSM Nashville
730 WFMW Madisonville, KY Classic Country
820 WSWI Evansville, IN Alternative/Rap-Hiphop (University of Southern Indiana)
1400 WEOA Evansville, IN Urban AC
1540 WBNL Boonville, IN A little of everything.
1590 WRCY Mt Vernon, IN Cumulus Real Country

Thankfully, the AM tuner is noise free beyond part 15 issues outside the vehicle, sensitive and above average bandwidth.

My bad. For some reason I thought 860 was Spanish-language Gospel.....

No. It's full-on fabulous Gospel. As in Edwin Hawkins/Mahalia Jackson/Aretha Gospel. Though mostly a lot more contemporary than that. I only listen when I have a car with HD, but when I do, it blows the roof off. Here's the link:

http://www.gospel860.com/

In Charleston:

980 WAZS Summerville (Spanish)
1130 WHHW Hilton Head Island (standards)
1480 WZJY Mt. Pleasant (Spanish)

Really the only three strong ones left. Good radios can get other signals from FL and GA that play music.
