AM noise

Our transmitter shut down at 3 O'clock the other morning. On my way to the site I tried to do some DXing. Is it my imagination or is the AM band getting worse? It was not just IBOC garbage, but all kinds of QRM. Traffic lights, signs, etc.

I was able to pick up WOAI for the first time in years, although with alot of hash underneath.

It's a combination of increased noise on the band and the fact that for the last 20 years or so the quality of the AM tuners they put in radios has been crap.

What XM41 said. You've got to buy a radio from C. Crane or one like it if you want to get one specifically designed for AM listening.

I have a pretty good AM radio in my pickup too. I can thank Chrysler for that.

Yes the Chrysler car radios are not too shabby.

I've noticed that QSM noise getting worse around me. I attribute that to changes
in home electronics (more computers, wireless routers, big-screen TV's, CFL light bulbs,
etc.) Aside from the IBOC I have also noticed a definite increase in Mexican or Latin
American signals. Don't know if they are putting more stations on the air, boosting
power or what. And I think the signal quality of a lot of domestic AM's has gone in
the dumper. (KDKA for example was pretty bad, even before they went to IBOC.
Have cut engineering resources to the bone I reckon)
