AM on HD-2 to feed Translator...

Just curious...what is the legality of an AM carried on an FM HD-2 used to feed a translator? Is this permitted now?

Apparently FCC staff has been allowing this

It's also fairly routine to get as STA to run an AM on a translator regardless of the HD2. The 60 dbu of the tranlator can not extend beyond the the 2 mv contour of the Am OR 24 iles from the AM transmitter. Other than that, you seem to pay your money and get authorized. Under an STA.

The catch being that there must already be an authorized translator where you need it. To my knowledge, it's not possible to drop in a new translator for this purpose...a majotr fly in the ointment.

it's 25 miles or 2 mv, whichever is less

True, but you can move a translator... so long as some contour from the new signal wherever you move it to overlaps the old one.
