Am on WMWM Juke Joint today--Kooper tix

Am doing WMWM Juke Joint today (91.7 Salem, 12-3 pm). Don't worry, no politics. And oh, I might give away a couple pair of Regattabar tickets. Some guy named Al Kooper...hopefully podcast of my show will be put on
wmwmsalem.com later today.

thanks!...wait that link took me to ALICE COOPER!

wmwm's req line is down so those vying for Koop tix can try me BEFORE
3 pm today at biz line 978-745-9401 or bob917fm@

yeah, Al Kooper has had to deal with that all his professional life. Al Kooper played with The Stones (You Can't Always Get What You Want), but Alice Cooper is OPENING for the Stones. Story of A.K.'s life. (Actually, being one of the keyboard players on one of their most classic songs is more important than opening up for the band on one night of a career...)

You can see Al Kooper on Visual Radio when I re-run my interview with him; it goes back to 1999 or something.

Alice Cooper puts on a tremendous show. He personally thanked me for all my reviews of his discs (Brutal Planet, Dragontown, Easy Action, etc. etc.) after an Orpheum show about 4 years ago. He always does the Orpheum around Halloween.

Maybe we should put the confusion to rest and have Al Kooper open for Alice Cooper?

no takers for the Koop tix, oh well (contest closed)...meanwhile show going up on wmwmsalem.com

the last file will feature my phoner (interview) with Finis Tasby (spent years w/ Freddie King). Finis was getting ready to play Boston Blues Fest at Hatch Shell. http://www.finistasbyblues.com

No takers for the tickets to see Al Kooper? Someone's going to miss a good show. I was at Al's summer concert series in Lowell last year and he put on a great show in a tribute to Mike Bloomfield. Another poster asked what Kooper's greatest hit is..Good question, as to me there could be several answers. Personally, I think that whole first BS&T album, Child is Father to the Man, is excellent. Especially, I Love You More Than You'll Ever Know. And for the younger members of this board, and even you "veterans" of the music business, try to get your hands on Al's book, Backstage Passes and Backstabbing Bastards. You won't find a better read on the music business, written in a style that only Al possesses. You won't find any "revisionist" history..just the facts!

what was Kooper's big hit?

Kooper never had a big Top 40 hit of his own, though he played on many big hits for others including Bob Dylan's "Like A Rolling Stone" and the Rolling Stones "You Can't Always Get What You Want". He also accompanied George Harrison, Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr on their tribute song to John Lennon "All Those Years Ago" in the early 80's.

Kooper got a lot of FM AOR airplay in the late 60's for the first Blood, Sweat & Tears album, his "SuperSession" album with Stephen Stills and the late Mike Bloomfield, and his psychedelic blues/jazz/rock band The Blues Project. (Unfortunately, today's Classic Rock radio won't touch any of those).

Check out his bio on his website for much more.

Here's a pic of Al performing live on the air on my old show at WMBR in 2003.

... and also discovered/produced Lynyrd Skynyrd for a number of years!

Kooper is awesome... one of my musical heroes. definitely check him out. Saw him a few years back at the Iron Horse in Northhampton. Great set of songs and his witty anecdotes are worth the price of admission alone. Would have loved to have sat in on one of his classes when he was teaching at Berklee in the late 90s.

Used to spin lots of his band/solo stuff on my old deep cuts show back at my previous station.

Kooper did play on the song Eli mentioned, but he wrote a song for Gary Lewis & The Playboys when Leon Russell was producing and/or arranging them "This Diamond Ring". Does he play that in concert? Great song.

Kooper co-wrote "This Diamond Ring" with songwriters Bob Brass and Irwin Levine. He has been known to bring that out in concert occasionally, with a very different arrangement from the Gary Lewis pop hit version.

If anyone would like to check out Al Kooper live, he and his band The Funky Faculty are playing this Thursday evening at the Regattabar Jazz Club in the Charles Hotel, Harvard Square, Cambridge.
