AM Only/Dial Global

Hey monkey breath,
have a banana and chill. 7 posts in a row by YOU. Some ego you have.

Read the instructions that came with your radio. If you don't like the station TURN THE DIAL.

I don't have to do anything just because you want me to.

Don't like what I have to say? Don't read it.

This morning I heard Bob Snyder's "Amazing Grace". That's a good thing for all of us who liked "Joe Lacina Presents".

Besides, Hammondo, this format is close to perfect a lot of the time.

"True Love" by Bing Crosby Friday evening on my way home. "Somewhere", the song Barbra Streisand did, performed by a man and what sounded like Frank Sinatra's orchestra.

Now Saturday afternoon I heard Steve Perry's "Foolish Heart". I halfway expected this on Pointless Classics, but this is crazy!

I too believe Dial G is "close to perfect."

The Selector computer program they use to do the music selection has 10 years plus of history (with only minor changes), so it's probably an easy "drive" for the couple of interns that work for Chick. They (used to) do extensive auditorium testing- may still do this- so they certainly have this format and its small quirks nailed. You can't argue with success and their LONG history of success.

I've been trying to remember the guy's name who did Jeff Rollins shift prior to Jeff? Does anyone remember? It was prior to about 1992.

That'd be Jerry Healey. Boy, that DOES go back a ways!

I don't recall the sequence of events any more, but what I do remember is that Tony St. James was doing the evening shift on the network in the late 80s, and died suddenly. (I think he was only 42 or so.) There was a shifting of personnel, and Jeff R was either part-time or overnights at that point--I just don't remember. But, Jerry did leave the network for a time to take another gig, and wound up back at the network doing weekends until he retired a few years ago.

Another name from the past: Dick Heatherton, one-time weekend voice, when it was the Transtar Radio Network!

When you think about it, the jock lineup at that place has been remarkably stable over the years!

Regards,
Ken Clark

Jerry Healy, That's right. Thanks for jogging this old guys brain cells. Anybody else work with Selector? Man, when you know how to do it - it's fabulous.

Chick is a master.

When I heard it back in 2001, it was nothing like it is now. More like Useless Classics. And others who post here have said the same thing. But now they're back on track.

Anybody know what the deal was with the overnight shift?

I know Peter Doeblin was in there for a couple months, and then announced he was going away (but made it clear he was being led off kicking and screaming) and was replaced by Drew Braxton. What happened?

Drew Braxton sounds like Andy Fuller.

I enjoyed Peter...where can I hear him?

When I said this format was close to perfect, I had just heard a mix of music that sounded like Music of Your Life on a bad day.

Today, it was mostly 70s soft AC. That's good, but I heard "Lollipops and Roses" by Jack Jones and "Darling, Je Vous Aime Beaucoup" by Nat King Cole toward the end of my time listening. And Frank Sinatra's theme song from his days with Tommy Dorsey. I don't remember the name of the song now, but it sounded so good. And I'm supposed to settle for The Captain and Tennille and Glen Campbell? I like them, but come on!

I remember the name Peter Doeblin from Format 41.

I could turn on the radio near where I live now, when I was visiting my grandparents, and hear the same thing on Lite 102, Joy 100 and W-Lite 96.

I tried to write a Wikipedia article about AM Only, but I got a warning that it was "blatant advertising". That's what I get for trying to use slogans from web sites as evidence of the format's evolution. That wasn't a problem when I did the Stardust article.

Anyway, I'll try again with better research from published sources. Anyone know of any? This site is not an acceptable source.

I'd give you lots of sources, but you'd only turn it into 16 more posts. The people at Dial Global are crazy about careful research. THATS WHY they've lasted so long.

I suggest you e-mail Chick Watkins directly about your problems with the music. He'd be interested. Really.

I've written him by snail mail. Not lately. I was happy this morning, though. I mean as happy as I'm likely to be. Since I like the softer AC that the AC stations don't play, I'm not having that much of a problem.

He did send me this big package years ago which included an article on him from Billboard. Now if I could find that artcile online ...

Yep, that's him. He'd been on their Format 41/Soft AC/AC format since 1984 and was shifted over to Adult Standards around the first of the year, only to be replaced. Too bad, I liked him. :'(

Getting back to the format sounding almost perfect, it was on Thursday and Friday. This morning, back to "normal". Not too bad with the AC, but not quite as much of the true standards. As Baby Bear would say, just right. Now Papa Bear would probably like Thursday and Friday when I was listening, but it would be hard to attract young people. Mama Bear would like all those 70s AC tunes I was hearing on another day.

Over the weekend I listened for a while and it was just about perfect.

Monday, it was like a roller coaster. Really good songs paired up with really out-of-place ones. So many boxcars lying on the ground I was watching for Tommy Lee Jones.

I have no objection to "Lotta Love" by Nicolette Larson, but it just seems strange on this type station.

This morning I heard "Just an Old-Fashioned Love Song". Too loud. There was plenty of good stuff, but

Another almost-perfect mix over the weekend.

The first thing I heard was "That Sunday, That Summer". Followed by Andy Williams' "'Godfather' Theme". And Tony Bennett on "I Left My Heart In San Francisco." Is that not amazing? They do this periodically. If a real standards fan gets lucky, that's what will happen his/her first time. It'll be a letdown when that person finds out the truth ...

Football season is here. No more music on Saturday afternoons. :(

Has anyone noticed how busy they are giving away prizes? They don't relax on the weekends.

Casey Hayes seems to have replaced Lou Simon.

I hate to break it to you, but that's what makes it possible to play Standards the rest of the time.

I like to think of our station as a "music station,” but the truth is local sports makes up about 1/3 of our annual operating budget. If someone would like to pony up so it wasn't necessary, I'll bet quite a few stations would consider ditching sports, but I don't see that happening in the near future.
