AM RADIO HISTORY QUESTIONS (Blanks to fill)

Hey Guys:

Thanks for all of your help so far!! I have been going through my notes to get each station in order and I found some blanks that I have and some formats I want to make sure are correct. Here we go.

1. Was KWOW 1600 ever Top 40 between 1969 and 1971?

2. Did KFI 640 become Full Service AC/Talk in 1984 and Full Time Talk in July of 1988?

3. Would anybody know what year KIEV became Country? And was the format before country Big Band?

4. Did KYPA become Korean in March 1998?

5. Did KFOX 1280 become country in Dec 1961? Did it have a format before country?

6. Would anybody know the format of KWIZ 1480 before it became oldies in 1965?

Again thanks very much for your help on these questions!!

T.J:

1. No. KWOW was a very successful Country station with live jocks until the early-mid 70s. It went oldies in '74 or '75.

2. KFI slipped back from Top 40 to AC during 1983/84 and began adding talk elements into the mix in '85/'86. The switch to an agressive talk approach was in late August of '88. I was vacationing in Los Angeles that week. One morning, it was Al Lohman and Gary Owens, with Gary doing the legal IDs all day ("KFI, Los Angeles...We're talking Southern California"). The next, Al and Gary were gone, Tom Leykis was in afternoons and the IDs were a harsh, growling ("KFI, Los Angeles. Mouthin' off for a living.").

3. KIEV went Country in 1963. Before 1963, Big Band wouldn't have been called Big Band...it would have just been MOR.

4. The only information I can find says KYPA went Korean in 2002.

5. KFOX 1280 went Country in August, 1959. At the time it was the only 24/7 Country station in Southern California (and it was owned at the time by Bing Crosby). In June, 1959, the station had switched back to MOR after doing Top 40 for a while (no idea how long that while was, though trade ads in Billboard indicate some play of R&B records as far back as 1956).

6. KWIZ started airing requests in April, 1965. Most of the requests were for oldies, so the format sort of gradually morphed in that direction. They didn't stop playing current records until sometime in '67, though. Looks like they were Top 40 prior to going all-request...at least as far back as 1962.

My memory of KWIZ through 1965 was top 40, not oldies, I recall requests before 65, but a lot of stations were doing that. My first transistor radio, received as a gift at age 6 in 1962 was more or less glued to 1480 (though it sometimes drifted up to 1190 or down to 980). Then beginning in the summer of 65 ,it seemed to get stuck on 930 forever!

Hey Michael:

Thanks for the info. I guess the info I got was wrong.

Would you know was 1600 KWOW ever a Top 40 station?

The one thing I do know is that 1600 started out in 1947 as KPMO and went to KWOW in 1958. It started country in 1960.

Would you know the format before 1960?

Thanks

T.J.:
Looks like KWOW flipped to Country in 1961, not 1960....and in 1959, they were "heavily playing" Edd "Kookie" Burns (from the TV show "77 Sunset Strip)'s latest single, according to Billboard...so that might have meant they were Top 40.
