AM radio in McComb

Was passing through McComb the other day and heard WAKK 980 and WAPF 1140 simulcasting black gospel. Both stations were so weak you could barely hear it under the static. and that was on highway 51 in downtown McComb. 980 used to have a decent 5000 watt signal. There is no way it could still be 5000 watts. Both stations sounded like they must be on some flea powered nightime patterns. the old 5000 watt 1250 is now deleted and the other 2 stations might as well be based on what I barely could hear. Did the current owners destroy the stations or was it just my radio?

both AM stations were simulcasting what sounded like black gospel. the signal was so bad I could barely get them above the spark plug static. I managed to get them for just a few miles when not near a power line. The signals for both stations sucked.

980 lost their tower some time ago. I understand that they had been operating on a temporary longwire antenna at reduced power. Not sure if that is still the case.

WHNY is dead..Charlie Holt finally let it die..I have pics of their former studio now destroyed on my profile...Plus Mr Holt is 90!! WAPF and 1140 are both sinolcasting the signal on 104.9 in Centerville. Dont know why..aparently Dowdy is only worried about K106..107.7 recently flipped AGAIN to Classic Hip Hop from sports...total waste of radio frequencies up there in McComb now!

Beach: Are you still in radio? Long time since wonderful W-1! Chief

J Boyd, I got out of radio as a way to make a living many years ago, and got out of part time work when I moved from St. Louis to Atlanta in 2005. I'm back in California, just north of San Francisco in Petaluma, working in Corte Madera, just a few miles from the Golden Gate Bridge.

I miss radio, but the business died many years ago. No one told the patient it died, though.

BG: sorry you feel that way...it may have died in some circles, but thankfully I am still doing well in bankrupt, poor, backwards, biased, Mississippi! Beauty is in the eye of the beholder....I hope you can come by someday...otherwise, all the best to you and great memories....JBI

Yes, in many small areas, it is still alive because operators are still putting real people on the air, and pay attention to the audience. But I've lived in too many places where there is just nothing worth listening to. I have Sirius in my car and listen to that.

Where are you these days, anyway? I've not been to Mississippi in a while other than to drive right through. Being in California now, I probably won't make any day trips there, but if there is one radio draw there I'd love to spend some time with, it would be J. Boyd. I used to really enjoy talking to you back 40 years ago. (Hard to believe it was so long ago!)

OK, BG: I am unofficially retired, but will be transferring my stations next year to my Station Manager,,,I am in Batesville...55 miles south of Memphis on I-55. I will still be the CE as long as possible,,,but I am in the 70's now...and recently suffered a serious fall...but not to worry...I will not totally quit until the message comes from above! Hope to see you again before that...JBI
